Are there more potentially lost Fan Games?

With the recent backlash from Nintendo in regards to AM2R and Pokemon Uranium, have there been other fan games that were completed that have been DMCA'd in the past?

I know there's like a laundry list of things that were in development that got shut down before they were completed, but what other fan remakes or projects were completed that may not be available any more?

The most famous one is the Chrono Trigger fan remake, which was closed down by Square (before they were Square-Enix) many moons ago...

The game was called Chrono Resurrection.

Codename: Gordon, released 2004:

This one was never DMA'd because Valve is actually quite good with their fanbase when it comes to remakes and fan made projects. The game even appeared on Steam. But I still include it as a missing fan game, because it was removed from Steam a long time ago and it just fell into complete obscurity.

Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded:

This is a fan project recreation of Duke Nukem 3D on Unreal 3. I believe Gearbox DMA'd this one. I don't really know the current status on it.

Whoa, I'd never even heard of Codename: Gordon. That looks really neat. There was like a whole era of people taking popular games and demaking them to 16-bit games, but the ones I followed (mostly Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII) never got close to being completed, so it's cool to see one that did

Project: Gordon was one of the early indie games that appeared on Steam. Back when Pop Cap and Telltale were classified as indie developers. I forget if they charged money for it, but it was delisted a long time ago.

Really hard to find completed fan games that were taken down.

Streets of Rage Remake

Features off the top off my head:
-All levels from all 3 official games plus new areas
-Loads of unlockable characters (including bosses and new ones), including every form from every game for returning ones
-A shop to buy cheats/fun stuff with all the money/points you earn when playing
-Super Mario Streets of Rage Maker - make your own game
-Customisable palettes
-A large amount of options to customise how you want things to work. Hit-pause like SoR2? Diagonal running? Timer, special meter, or both?
-Special attacks as well as SoR1's artillery special

Sega is said to have known about this fan game and gave their blessing to continue, but after 8-10 years of development it released, widely regarded as the best Streets of Rage game ever made, and DMCAd.

But as with all things on the internet, it's not lost forever.

I got another one...

Motor Rock:

This is a complete fan remake of Blizzard's Rock n' Roll Racing. There was even a kickstarter for this game, but it failed. But the developers still managed to finish the game anyway and release it on Steam through Steam Greenlight. Blizzard did take it down because the game used sound clips that were ripped from the SNES game .

The remake is quite good too, aside from some weird UI choices. The developers really put a lot of work into this one.

It's always been free. Reportedly, the store page was taken down as the domain used for the in-game website banner expired following the death of Nuclearvision and was later used by a squatter to deliver porn and malware.

Ah, so that's why it was delisted.

You can still buy a key on the official website, weirdly enough.

I actually made a ~USD$279 profit on the game as, having been made privy to the copyright infringement, I bought three spares and sold them for 50 TF2/Dota 2 keys each shortly before the devs began selling the game themselves.

Shadow Moses remake in Unreal Engine 4 got shut down by Konami not too long ago.

Yeah, I followed it for awhile and it's a real shame

I think they said they're taking the work they did and are moving it to something original though

It was weird because I remember Konami like retweeting links about it and stuff.

I am going to take a guess and say that they have a finite number of keys at their disposal, and once they are gone, they are gone. Unless they can get replenished keys from Valve still?

The devs weren't stripped of their Steamworks Partner credentials, however, yeah, I would guess that Valve disabled key generation. They must have generated quite a lot of keys, though, as SteamSpy estimates that the game has ~13.8k owners and this guy says his brother bought himself a key just earlier this month.

Interesting exploit of the Steam store front.

To be honest, there's a number of indie, doujin, and fan games that have been lost to time at this point. Being a horror enthusiast, it crossed my mind maybe I should back up all the little freeware indie horror games out there that risk being lost to time for anyone who may want to play them in the future.

That streets of rage remake and rock n roll racing remake look pretty nice. Too bad they were DMCA'd, but thank God they were completed before they were C & D'd.
