Well, if that's what the thread's for...

I'm a hardcore gamer. I like to follow games, and the people who make them, the studios, the fate of various publishers. I like to discuss games a lot with friends, and online.

And I play a ton of Nintendo games, so that whole picture is pretty stupid. Halo and Skyrim are pretty casual these days too. I actually skipped every Halo after the 1st one, and I skipped Skyrim as well.

I don't care for the people who hate the term "gamer." I like the term, and I think it describes an enthusiast gamer just fine. A whole lot of people are heavily invested in adding a negative stigma to the term though. That will never really phase me. I was gaming back when it was actually looked down upon in social situations and by most of society. It's nothing new.

Absolute crap. I find the term Gamer insulting. To then think you're better than someone else because they play different games to you is just weird. I mean..They have the same hobby as you. Mobile games, Nintendo games, PC and "current gen" games. They're all good baby.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm an OG.

An Original Gamer.

Topic wise, I don't know why people want to separate themselves. Gaming is a culture and like any other culture, there are a lot of different facets to it.

I don't get why someone has to be a "REAL" gamer.

If ya game ya game.
But surely you can recognise that theres a difference between someone who plays games from time to time and someone who actually follows the gaming industry, sees gaming as an art form and partakes in debates and discussions related to gaming and its future.

I mean, ok, the "REAL gamer" thing doesnt mean much, but there are defiantly people with different levels of interest in gaming culture. It just doesnt seem to fair to say that some guy whose been picking up a pad for the past 2 years every weekend is on the same level as a real "connoisseur" whose been playing for three quarters of their life & actively follows gaming news daily.

Actually, the people who segmented themselves went the opposite direction. There were simply just games. All games were hardcore.

At a much later date, people added the term casual games. No one added the term "gamer" to isolate people. It actually went in the reverse direction.

Casual gamers WANTED to segment themselves, because playing games was seen as a negative. Much like people who feel like the term "gamer" is insulting, the attacks keep going in one direction only. It's people trying to attack hardcore gamers and make them feel like shit for no reason.

Why the hell not? Why can't they be the same as me?

I buy games all the time, I've beat more then I can count and I'm on Gaf multiple hours a day given my job and home life.

Outside of having more time to waste on this stuff, I'm no different then the bro/lady who picks up a pad every other weekend for the last two years.

I'd say that everyone who keeps in check with the industry and awaits and preorders games is a "real" gamer. Everyone who picks up a game here and there to pass time isn't.

I have two simple criteria to consider somebody a "real gamer":

1) They are enthusiastic about games
2) They are open minded and are willing to try good games in genres they like. In other words, they won't pass up on a potentially good title just because the graphics are colorful or something dumb like that.

You bastard! I'd been surviving until now... but I can't lie to a direct question. I'm a false gamer! I've always been a false gamer... I've never meant it when I gamed... I was just doing it to fool everyone, to infiltrate your ranks and gain your trust... and then, when the time was right, I would betray you all to the non-gaming mobs and steal your precious... I don't know. I don't know what the point of this was.
You stole my heart!

Gamer = video game companies using identity politics to sell products and push brands.
Getting people who play video games to self identify as "gamers" is one of the biggest and most successful marketing ploys of all time.

Yeah, I would never call myself a 'gamer'. Those people are actually the worst.

At best, that is just a hobby I'm really deep into and I know a bunch of trivia. About dumb fucking video games.

Exhibit A people.

This person wants to identify as a casual gamer, so they segment themselves. Not the other way around. Anyone who doesn't call them "fucking video games" is "the worst."

It's the same nerd-shaming that's been around since the 70s, just with slightly updated language.

Who is that pirate in the third picture?

Hollywood Big Shot? Keifer isn't that big to be completely honest.

It's why I constantly have found the change to be so dumb. Keifer isn't big enough to make you suddenly legit Kojima, so you should have went with quality and gone MGS4 or even Solidus over the nonsense in MGS V.
It was a little tongue-in-cheek. All I know of David is that he did some writing for X-Men and Watchmen movies and that he was Captain America on the 90s Spider-Man cartoon. He's kind of Hollywood too.

Doesn't change that Konami basically ditched him though.

ALSO:

"I don't want to be known as a gamer!"

So would you also consider anyone who owns a car to be a car enthusiast on the same level as say, Jeremy Clarkson?

I call myself a gamer. I don't see why not. I'm a person who plays games and who's interested in gaming culture. It's not elitist or anything. If anything, I'm always drawing non-gamers into the fold by sharing my hobby with them.

No need to be insecure. In my experience, people like passion, as long as you're pleasant about what you like. :-)

Skyrim? Hardcore? I liked Skyrim, I really did (even without mods during my first playthrough) but that game isn't hardcore. Not even close. You can barely call it an RPG ffs...
