Arkham Knight on PS4 is a technical tour de force - Digital Foundry

"Arkham Knight on PS4 is a technical tour de force"

It doesn't look that impressive to me. There are plenty of PS4 games that look better with similar game design.

Inclined to agree.

I think it looks great due to fantastic art direction, but it still reminds me of a beefed up UE3 game. It looks a bit flat.

For open world titles, I still think InFamous: Second Son has yet to be beat. It has much stronger lighting and post processing than Batman.

They actually stop selling the damn thing???

OK gonna rent it for ps4...fuck them not gonna reward incompetence with even more money.

I want to see this pic with PS4 instead PC at least one time :P

I wouldnt recommend it, afaik that meme is outright banned here on gaf.

Yeah, ISS is a benchmark, especially as it runs at 40+FPS looking as crazy as it does (especially the First Light episode) ... but what else? "Plenty" would imply at least 4-5 games, and other than ISS I can't think of any. AC:U has some framerate problems and is 900p, so the only remaining great looking open world game I can think of is The Witcher 3. But that game doesn't seem quite as impressive looking as this - hard to compare because the environments are so different though.

I can imagine, considering how solid the framerate is for Arkham Knight, it would probably runs above 30fps most of the time if they unlocked it like Infamous; Rocksteady did a wonderful job.

Yea, because that's what PC Gaf is all about. Always spewing that Master Race shit, right?

Actually the only time I ever see it used on Gaf is condescendingly, from posters liek you to antagonize and troll.

Always fun to see another meltdown from Kinthalis. Gotta love those edits also.

But yeah, game is super impressive technically. Enjoying it a lot so far.

It surprises me how he and his F-bomb avoided the banhammer, but Krisprolls didn't.

The game runs and looks good on the PS4, and I'm enjoying it so far, with the exception of some Batmobile missions, Riddler's in particular.

It's a bit unfortunate they didn't have anything to say about the Xbox One version. They said at the end they're still waiting for retail code, but I thought the game was out everywhere by now? Guessing they had just gotten it by the time the article was finished.
I mean they already told us last week how well the PS4 version ran, and while I suppose it's nice they fleshed out their praise with some more details, it would be nice to hear a little more about the XONE version performance, which has seemed to be the least discussed of the 3 versions.

Got it both on pc (for free on there) and now also PS4 clearly shows how good the playstation version is been playing for a couple of hours and it has some dips during batmobile but overall good performance.

If you're interested in eyeballing the performance, GameInformer played the first half hour on Xbone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygsB1S7ayNU

Do I need to have played the previous two games to "get" this one?

Considering purchasing it
The story ties pretty heavliy into the Asylum and City from what I've seen so far, so I'd recommend it. They're definitely worth a playthrough too though.

I actually think that Infamous SS has aged quite poorly so far outside of the cutscenes and particle effects. And ACU is a great looking game regardless of framerate issues and 900p. I certainly think that what i've seen of gotham looks infinitely better than Infamous. I mean come on.

are u serious? AK looks so much better than iSS lol

Why am I not surprised? *Looks at tag* Oh, right.

Just kidding. Anyway, AC Unity does look very good even on consoles, but the 900p res and bad AA were really hurting the IQ. Well, at least, AC Syndicate looks better from what we've seen (which hopefully isn't PC footage).

There's no point looking good if performance is crap.

I played it after GTA V's PS4 port and Infamous wasn't quite as visually impressive to me. I don't know about aging "poorly" exactly, but it definitely looks like a launch window game. A great looking launch window game, but far from the best the system has to offer.

It also has bad draw in. Really, the game makes a lot of compromises. I don't find it that impressive. At least they have dialled back those pointlessly huge crowds in Syndicate and the game seems to be running quite well. It seems more polished as well.

It's fucking disgusting how digital foundry is actually breaking up their face off into smaller smaller pieces as time goes. Before it was just performance, and first impressions. Now it's almost everything.

You wanna know what hurt the IQ the most, that horribly implemented chromatic aberration filter in the dlc. I'm pretty sure they've only been showing ps4 footage.

There's no point looking good if performance is crap.
True, but Batman fortunately doesn't suffer from that issue.

Very far. It looked great at release though for me. It did give a good idea about what we were in for visually this gen. Wouldn't say that GTAV's models look better tho.

Unity does look great, but I can't help but notice it's blurryness on the console's, having now gotten used to playing mostly 1080p games. But to me it looked blurrier than even most 900p games look. Granted the only thing I've seen it being played on is a 50" plasma at fairly close viewing distances.

I don't agree that InFamous aged badly. Looks incredible even now, and is still one of the cleanest looking games out there.

Yeah... you should try playing W3 on a modern PC as I enjoyed a rock solid 1080p60 for all 90+ hours. WB & co. should take notes from CDPR on how to release a proper PC port day & date with consoles.

With that said, AK is phenominal on PS4.

WB should take notes on how to do a competent PC version, yes. BUT so should CDPR, when it comes to optimizing for console. The performance of TW3 on PS4 is unacceptable at times, and it shouldn't have to be. What causes the most issues isn't geometry complexity or anything like that, it's alpha effects. As soon as you get some rain on screen along with some fire or something the framerate just nosedives to 20 and stays there. Arkham has similar effects (it's ALWAYS raining), and it doesn't give a shit. Stays sooo smooth at all times (with some very rare and minor drops). Why can't TW3 handle alpha effects properly? It's not very well optimized for the PS4, that's why. Ok, so Arkham is an exceptional example of console optimization, but still.

Sounds like Rocksteady really worked at getting the PS4 version solid at launch. As rare as that is in this age of gaming I have to give them props. Can't wait to play this as soon as I finish The Witcher 3.

This has been probably one of the worst offenses. They've now written 3 DF articles on Arkham Knight and still don't have a full comparison.

Perhaps aged poorly is the wrong term, it's just that for me personally, the game world that they crafted isn't super impressive anymore. Especially when I compare it to what i've seen of Batman AK,
Been gracefully avoiding spoilers like the plague while downloading these updates.
, and other next gen open world games.

I do agree that the actual world doesn't feel quite as vibrant or compelling in InFamous Second Son, but at the same time, the traversal options, and all the crazy powers, effects, particles, streaks etc, somewhat make up for it. Gliding through the sky with your batsuit, or jumping from roof top to roof top as an Assassin, that's one thing, but blitzing up, along and over buildings at incredible speeds as a beam of neon light, or plumes of fiery smoke, that's something altogether different and impressive.

Difficult to determine which version to buy. PS4 version is 1080p, but X1 is my preferred console.
(I think I will pick up X1 version.)

Impressive ! In motion, it expresses so much better than at still. Those post processing fx are made to shine into that context. Screenshots don't do justice to this game, really.

One thing about Batman here is that it has tons of little details up-close that look incredible, but panned out or at a casual glance it may not always look dramatically better than Arkham City - which I think is a testament to how good the latter still looks and how powerful the 360 and PS3 were for their time.

Pretty sure traversal in AK is faster, because you fly for much longer periods and can propel yourself at any point for more speed. I mean once Neon was obtained that was pretty much all you needed for traversal. It wasn't really incredible speeds really.
Plus Batmobile.

After playing it for the first time today I will say that it didn't fully meet my expectations. That said my expectations were really high because for some reason this game looks so amazing in trailers etc.

Once you play it for yourself you realize this look has more to do with its really great art style than reliance on the power of the actual engine.

Yeah, bad pop in, AA and 900p resolution really held the game back in visuals. Fortunately, Syndicate seems to be an improvement in these areas. Reducing the huge crowds seems to be a good call so far.

Sure, but I was talking about the main campaign. The IQ was pretty bad because of the 900p res and bad AA. Also, the AF was quite low IIRC.

That's fine, it seems good on X1 as well, but the frame-rate is more consistent on PS4 in addition to the higher resolution.

I much prefer supporting companies like CDPR that release games that run well on all platforms. Hopefully if there is enough pressure from the fans they will fix it.
They...didn't, though.

Witcher 3 is not great on consoles and launched in an even worse state.

Batman Arkham Knight is one of the most polished console releases in the last couple years. Two of the three versions released are incredibly polished.

With the Witcher 3 only one of the three versions was really polished out of the gate.

In a videogame context, Reason must [ALWAYS] prevail over emotion.
If a game runs better on one of your both consoles, there is no question about what version to favor. At full price, always get the superior version, nothing more, nothing less...

But it worked and was playable on every platform...the same cannot be said for AK.

Witcher 3 still has major framerate problems on PS4 so it is automatically less impressive than this game.

Yeah I'm a huge PlayStation fan and was actually one of the winners on the GAF photo contest for inFamous SS but those comments always confused me. It's nice and all but it's really not amazing...
