ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

Guardian Shield is so cool. Playing with him completely changes the matches. Not only because you can use it as shield, but also due to the fact you control when it activates.

Also a relatively simple three hit combo I found was Helix's Ice Dragon and Guardian. Charge your fists up, push out Guardian, and then Ice Dragon before it loses it's charge. If Ice Dragon hits, it freezes the opponent, then you push your Guardian to stun him, and then with him stunned, you throw him. It's not that easy to pull off as you need the proper distance, but when it works you do a good 300+ damage.

Is there a way without doing this?, I like using my joycons separately without the grip - I wanna chill on the sofa comfy not using the motion controls.

Someone mentioned earlier that you can use them as regular controllers if you just use the control stick on the character select menu

Second test punch... First one was with friends at a party so I didn't get much of a great look at it outside of flailing wildly.

Now that I love had time with the game I can say... I love it and hate it.

I love the mind games you build one on one and when you out play the other opponent it feels good... And that's about it. The controls work decently enough, but everything just feels so slow and sluggish. And while the controls work 90 percent of the time, that 10 percent where you grab 8nstead of block, or send out two arms instead of grab, or your Dodge only goes 2 feet insrltead of 5... All those are times that you'll lose and fucking hate the game.

I wish the arms were the only thing relegated to the motion and everything else was buttons. You can't respond quick enough with a block but you can easily Dodge cuz it's a button. Without the joycon straps you would have easily been able to hold it in a normal way that felt good for punching and pressing buttons I think.

I dunno I'll give it more time, but that 10 percent of absolute frustration and confusion is enough to keep me from buying this game... At least until the price come down if it does I guess.

Also fuck the volleyball game. Sometimes the ball hits the floor and then just sticks and blows up, sometimes it can bounce back up and fly over the net. It feels so inconsistent to be fun.

Three and four player are fun though cuz it's more of the mind games.

You don't have to use the grip. The Switch has no way of knowing whether they are in the grip or not. It's just a piece of plastic. I think someone said just start using the analog sticks and it should work.

Sorry to pop in unannounced, but didn't Mario Kart 8D let you make your own tournament/rooms and let you configure what mode you wanted? Why wouldn't that be the case here?

Private tournaments aren't the same as public matchmaking though.

I mean yeah, it's fun to play in the NeoGAF 150cc lobby when it's full. It sucks when there's only 3 people though. In public lobbies with full matchmaking, you don't get to choose your speed. And you have to select your character and kart/parts before you know what the speed will be.

I wish they'd let me remap the buttons on the Pro controller so the triggers could be punches.

Punch = ZL / ZR
Grab = ZL + ZR
Guard = L + R

Jump = B
Dash = Y
Rush = A
Change Target = X

The triggers actually do punches already. Oddly unlisted on the controls

Played helix most of this round.

Mummy vs Helix and he barely got a hit on me! I just wiggled past every swing and blobed him to death! No dashing or dodging or jumping or moving lol Was amazing. Love helix now.

Jep they do and I wouldn't have it any other way. You can also Target Switch with the Right Analogue Stick, which felt much better than with the button below the left Analogue you wouldn't ever want to let go...

Knowing this, the dashing and Jumping was much more natural, it doesn't even matter that it's mapped strangely when you only need two face buttons to play the game anyway.

lol

Nintendo defense force never ceases to amaze me.

We don't know how customizable Party Mode will be but looking at all the different other modes so far and all the options available for each it sounds promising, so let's wait until we get confirmation before burning bridges.

And what is the issue with using Ranked Mode for 1v1s if hypothetically Party Mode doesn't go into a second menu like everything else we've seen so far do and is just a giant "go online; everything on" button?

So the game is definitely a buy for me. Love the mechanics and the feel of the fights. I just really hope there's a way to play 2v2 matchmaking with an online friend.

Ah ok. That did suck, but I guess we'd have to wait and see what they do in the full game.

So what's the consensus gaf? Motion or butttons?

The will be no consensus. You must try both yourself, and decide if motion is worth the initial learning curve. For me it most definitely was.

Man, good times. Ended at the top of the lobby with 80 points. As much as I know I'll spend the majority of my time in 1v1, the party lobby is a really fun idea and has a really interesting dynamic that influences fights. Obviously you can't choose who you pair up with but it's really cool to have matches that matter more than others, or hoping you get paired up with or against specific players. And the way it changes the mind games mid match as well. Like lower ranked people ganging up on higher ranks during free for alls.

It took me a while but I'm getting used to all the modes. 1v1 is definitely my favorite, but once you get used to them, free for alls and volleyball and 2v2, they all work well. Being able to keep up with multiple players by switching the camera quickly and predicting flanks is pretty exhilarating. I'm really excited to play 2v2 with a teammate that I can communicate with and trust to do well.

Tried out the non-motion controls more and they're okay. Still feels a bit awkward the way the default buttons are. If I could remap them I wouldn't have any issues. Motion so far clicks more with me but I'm not going to force myself with them if I get tired. So will likely be switching between them as required but motion first. I still want to be able to map the block to a button. I also removed the straps as well and it's become easier to hit the button to switch targets.

The game still shines when it's 1v1 though for me. I also do not find V-Ball all that fun. Doesn't matter if the controls aren't an issue. It's just not that enjoyable. It makes me think that the Hoops mode will also be something I don't really care for. Guess we'll see but they seem like content padding modes anyway given how simply appear and how V-Ball is. I do like the warm up mode so I think the 1 vs 100 mode should be fun as should be the ARMS Getter mode.

I really want to see how many of the characters will play in the retail game. I don't like the defaults for Spring Man but want to use him more and I think with other arms I could like using him. Same with Min Min. I like Ribbon Girl and her defaults well enough. Mechanica is still my favorite and I want to try other arms with her. Mummy is to slow and I need more time to get used to him. Don't like playing as Ninjara or playing against him. Helix is eh all around for me. No real strong feelings.

73 points, won a couples of tag team match even. In handheld mode. This game is great.
Match of the evening for me was a 2v2 where me and my teammate both used minmin against 2 ninjaras. I went for double dragons since my partner opted for double chackrams. So one of use stayed on the front while I stayed on the back hitting from ten distance with my dragons. Great match.
Another great match has been the same partner but this time both using ninjara against 2 elix (both with guardian and blob), working together to evade the guardians has been great.

I'm not burning bridges, just expressing worry. The poster I was replying to decided to be a smartass and act like we already know that the options will be there. We don't know. Which is why I was talking about it.

To practice against other players without worrying about losing rank? There's a reason why every other fighting game has both "ranked" and "casual" options for online play.

I wish I liked this more than I do. It just feels clunky for me. This was my third time playing and I feel like I still don't really understand how aiming works. It seems like it just goes in random places no matter how I move my wrist. And a lot of the time it looks like my hits just go right through people.

Glad everyone here seems to be having fun though.

I can't get over how good this game feels to play, with either control method. It's fast, precise, and tactical. It also looks stunning.

What's great to me is how much it has changed already with only a few testpunches gone by. Players are, in general, a lot better than they were and that changes the game a LOT. I had plenty of Fight matches today where I and my opponent were positioning ourselves and doing some zoning and baiting for quite a while before any hits were even landed. I can't even imagine this game with all arms opened up.

hell, I had some heated 2v2 v-ball matches today

v-ball is actually fun if both sides know what they're doing

I tried Pro Controller, it's easier with regards to movement. More difficult for when you want to move and do specific punches at the same time.

Block being set to Left Stick button also meant I barely used it, while the L button is just unused, that could have used block...

So I went back to motion controls, I'll have no problems playing this game in handheld mode but motion controls work better for me and obviously the more you play this game, the easier it is to move around with motion controls.

It's no surprise people would have difficulty with motion controls since they are not "traditional" controls. Once you get use to it, it's not that hard to start moving around real fast.

It became apparent when I was using Ribbon Girl for my session switching from Pro Controller to Joy-Cons that my movement didn't become hampered because I knew how to move around fast with dashing, air dashing, multi air jumps while doing curved Slapamander hits.

My advice would be to try the joy con grip or pro controller. Curving punches is very easy with the analog stick. Not that it isn't easy with the thumbs-up joy con controls, but it might take longer to experiment and learn exactly how twisting the controllers should feel for different curving angles. Traditional controls should get you into the nuance of the game a bit quicker.

The more I play the game, the more I like it.

Not quite love at first sight as it was with Splatoon, but I'm convinced to keep my preorder.

And damn, thread has almost 70 pages already. This is going to do well.
