ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

I loved it. The things that mitigate the shitty feeling of a loss include the silly characters, the unpredictability of the details of your next match, and the song.

I don't ever play fighting games because I get super frustrated with losing, but there is some type of hook here that makes me want to keep playing.

The big question for me is:

Will they provide an addictive coop or single player experience that will keep me glued to my switch after an hour of this type of play? I imagine Portal 2 coop and Smash (haven't played it in years, maybe there's a better example) single player.

The more I play the game, the more I like it.

Not quite love at first sight as it was with Splatoon, but I'm convinced to keep my preorder.

And damn, thread has almost 70 pages already. This is going to do well.

It's Switch's Overwatch. Hands down.

Helixbros, what loadouts are you rocking mostly? I was trying to get used to the Guardian since dual Blorbs were kinda underwhelming.

I have bad upload speeds, but I am uploading 11 1080p/60FPS videos of matches I played the last hour.

Ended up finding my groove with Mechanica of all people.

hell, I had some heated 2v2 v-ball matches today

v-ball is actually fun if both sides know what they're doing

Right?? Today was the first time that I learned the v-ball mode was actually no joke. I can only imagine playing it with a friend on your side in 2v2. I ended up about 50/50 in my v-ball matches today whereas before I just sort of spazzed my way to victory most of the time.

I'm not burning bridges, just expressing worry. The poster I was replying to decided to be a smartass and act like we already know that the options will be there. We don't know. Which is why I was talking about it.

To practice against other players without worrying about losing rank? There's a reason why every other fighting game has both "ranked" and "casual" options for online play.

At the top of the screen it says "Rules: Random" and "First to 20 coins".

Customizable rules for Party Mode confirmed.

I love her other pose with the stretched out arms as she gleefully yells "Mechanica~!"

Single-player will have the following options:

  • Grand Prix
  • 1v1 against the CPU
  • 2v2 with CPUs
  • 1v1v1 with CPUs
  • 1v1v1v1 with CPUs
  • Skillshot: 1v1 with CPU
  • Skillshot: 2v2 with CPUs
  • V-Ball: 1v1 with CPU
  • V-Ball: 2v2 with CPU
  • Hoops: 1v1 with CPU
  • 1v100 Mode
  • Training
  • ARMS Test
  • ARMS Getter
And for many of those you can adjust the CPU difficulty, the time limit, the number of matches, the amount of HP and Rush Gauge, and whether items appear. :-O

You can also unlock every weapon for every character -- 30 weapons each -- and level up each weapon by acquiring duplicates.

We know this from the ARMS Direct, where we see them go into 1P Versus:

Has anyone else got the special shiny fake Helix in training mode? Got +1 arms bucks for beating.

Really getting a feel for the game now. I can't wait til the full version, though, coz it'll be nice to be able to mix/match more arm sets and also not be on the same three stages.

Its cool when you see a character in a game pre-release and think to yourself "I like the look of that character" and you choose them and you actually end up being good with them. Mechanica for life.

Hopefully Nintendo gets that left Joy-Con back to me before June 2nd so I can try the motion controls......& take screenshots.

Priority shipping pls

Maybe I'll try Motion controls again next time or I'll wait till the real game launches and hope for it to let me train them in a safe environment, you can't really learn anything the way you get hammered to death, when you're not perfect at using the joycons(as you get devastated by most players with more experience and/or a joycon grip or Pro Controller) and that isn't fun at all.

Try this next time you can:

Standing up leaning against something (back of couch for me)

Motion Controls

About 4 feet away from TV

Feels AMAZING. It's a workout.

TIPS FOR VBALL with Ninjara: Use Chakram. You can curve it to save balls from falling and it compensates for your slow movement speed.

I'll keep that in mind for the next week of the Testpunch, thanks.

When you're both Min Mins playing volleyball but the other Min Min chooses two dragon arms:

Somehow I became really good at volleyball this time around.
I went double dragon one volleyball match as a joke.

I won 5-0.

It's not impossible, it just takes a lot of careful thought and timing.

That's the exact same build I've been using. Love being able to punch while moving with her. Just set that boost and curve your punches as you go. Works great on the pro controller.

I loved it. I went in blind aside from the footage shown during the Switch announcement, so this was a very pleasant surprise.

The motion controls seemed perfect except moving forward, which would often get registered as throwing a punch. I didn't do research on the game before this test punch, so I may have been doing it wrong. There didn't seem to be a way to go back to the tutorial. I mostly stuck with the default guy since I only had the hour, and played around with the different arms.

I couldn't really figure the basic controls for non motion, so I didn't get to try it aside from one match that was a free win for my opponent. They need to allow custom controls, as block on left stick press is just awful and out of place.

Who sets the rules though? If it's like battle lounge in SFV then that's great—but it doesn't replace the need for standard "casual" mode with forced matchmaking.

I'm having trouble envisioning what you think "Party Mode" is going to be when someone clicks on it. It's clear that there are special rule options available for it, so why would it not be you that decides the rules of the type of lobby you want to join / create? If you're thinking it'd have to be invite only and not open to randoms, that's what the "Battle with Friends" mode is for.

Maybe since I've become more of a portable player with the DS, I'm more sensitive now.

BUT...this game's geometry impresses me. It doesn't need a single extra polygon. For this kind of art style I wonder how it could evolve in the future. I just don't see it.

Aside from resolution for the most part,it's definitely good enough now.,

I'm thinking if I make a "party" lobby set to only 1v1 battles, other players would have to manually select that lobby from a list or something in order to join. Then I play against the same group of people over and over again. Assuming anyone joins the lobby in the first place. That's how the MK8 tournaments worked.

What I want is: enter matchmaking for 1v1 fight. Finish fight. Re-enter matchmaking for another 1v1 fight.

...so basically the industry standard "casual" mode found in every other online fighting game.

Sometimes I'm gonna want to test new characters/arms against real players in 1v1 matches without worrying about my online rank.

Assuming each character only gets their signature arms, who do you guys think will win?

I'm assuming Ninjara. Seemed really popular for higher level play at earlier tournaments.

I mean, it does look very good, but...they could always up the polygon count (the round parts are still not 100% round). They could also improve lighting, effects, implement (better?) materials based rendering, more varied/complex crowds (or less sprites, more animation frames, etc)...In fact, the resolution in 1P is 1080pp @ a solid 60fps so the next step is going all the way to 4K.
