ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

This test punch gave me four 3 for alls in a row. I haven't had a bad experience with them. Punch one, then punch the other, from then on everyone has an understanding on how it'll go down. Punch your target and make sure the other one doesn't sneak up behind you with a grab. Easier said than done, but it's a blast.

Master Mummy.

Finally got in. Played as the Mummt and Noja guy.

Had a lot of fun, didn't know about the volleyball part. First dual match was me and another mummy and it was fun. Second time it was 1v1 bit the ball only ever went spike mode on the other side and that sucked big time.

I still liked it a lot. Total surprise. Some Power Stone vibes for sure. I will buy it day one, bit I hooe it has a lot more content. This could be smash leveks of fun with the right approach.

If this game only had party mode i wouldn't even play it for free. Good thing later on i can choose to ignore volleyball (and probably hoops, looks dumb). Volleyball is just not fun. At all. Especially if you have Helix selected....

how some guys changed colors for default ?

Click the left analog stick, keep it pressed and select/hold a direction then press A. each direction is a different color. top is default i think.

I just put about 30 minutes into this. Fuggin' awesome game. I'm in day 1. I played with the joycons and had a blast. It's so fun when you and your opponent are both about to get KO'd and you manage to out maneuver him to win. And because you're actually punching it adds a level of immersion and adrenaline that you just don't get with most games.

It's a good workout too.

I definitely got into the game a lot more this time around. Deflected more grabs than usual, made it a habit in 1v1v1 to constantly shift targets which resulted in me managing to distract opponents. In 2v2 I try to be grouped up with my partner so I can cover for him if he gets grabbed. Also, SHIELDING against flurries is fucking indespensable; builds a charge to use against the opponents and jumping out of it to go for a hard punish. If your opponent uses a Heavy Arm, it is especially easy to escape it.

I'm finally starting to feel good at the game and I'm loving it.

What does this shit mean?

Although the motion control wasn't bad I was instantly better on the pro controller. Was a really fun session but I hope there is enough single player content.

Does anyone elses switch fans go super loud playing this?

Both 1v1 and 1v1v1 are much more fun today than yesterday since that I'm finally used to the controls. This is really the splatoon of fighting games (creative gameplay, interesting characters, refreshing visuals) and might end up being my favorite fighting game ( I'm a casual when it to comes to SF and MK). Day 1 for sure.

Thoroughly loved it. Don't get how people are having trouble with grab spammers. As long as you wait for it and jump/dodge or just dodge then it's easily punishable with a follow up set of punches or another grab. Tried Min-Min, Mekanica, Ninjara, and Spring Man out and I have to say it's a draw between Spring Man and Mekanica for my favourite of the punch so far. Mek's Hammer/Volt fist combo is really nasty if you use them out of sync and the disabling effect of the volt fists is a nice added bonus, the fact that she can absorb hits without flinching is great too. The funniest thing I've seen so far is when me and a friend finished off our opponents with a double team punch to a bomb that randomly dropped into the arena near the end of the fight.

Damn people have gotten good in the 2 testpunches I didn't play! Really learnt how to zone you out with certain characters etc. Saw a lot of players with 2 of the same gloves too.

Also V-Ball is hot garbage, just the actual worst.

Played my second round. Thoughts:

- Ribbon Girl is a tough matchup for Mechanica. All of the current arms are too damn slow to deal with a shocker/slapamander combo.

- Mechanica with double hammers is still too good in 2v2. Went undefeated in 2v2s just by making them hammers rain.

- Some characters fucking suck for volleyball. I'm looking at you, Min Min, at least for her current arms.

- Movement with motion controls felt better this time. I'm starting to think of it more as a mech game and it makes more sense. Only had one messed up input when I tried to block and threw a punch. Still, I didn't feel the need to switch to my pro controller, even though it is more precise for movement.

- Got put in between two opponents on a 1v1v1 and had a train run on me. Full grab into Rush attack knocked out half my life for a KO instantly.

I'm just not good at this game. Using Pro controller.

Fun to play, but not fun to suck at.

Agree. I really wish they would have allowed us to just play against AI or local 2 player multiplayer in the test punch. By now people online are already falling into a groove and playing to win, but I still haven't decided how I want to play, who I want to play, etc. and testing that out online is god awful.

Yesterday I was warming up to the game, but today really put me off.

Yup mine did. I'm really surprised at how good the motion controls feel. The HD rumble also really adds to it.

Okay, I still think the controls are pretty off and wonky.

BUT this go round I went with Ribbon Girl and it really clicked. Her insane mobility with the slapamander is something else just jumping and slapping really found my niche.

Got to like 86

Also adopted a new strategy for 1v1v1 or 1v1v1v1 fights, just switch targets constantly, keeps one person from getting ganged up on so it feels good, but also throws people off cause they are expecting a gang up and you turn on em.

Yup, this is the strategy to go with in free-for-alls. This makes the fights so much more bearable. When one opponent is low on health? Go against the one with the higher health, cause they're going to feel comfortable - and then you can build an advantage against your opponent once the one with lower health goes down.

I'd say I'm 50/50 in winning battles. I tried playing Mechanica and did great with the Hammer, it felt so OP. I've managed to win a fight with Helix too, I have no idea how but I did it.

I got over-excited at one point and hit my hands on some furniture. lol

1v1v1 is bad and I hate it

/salt

It's not salt whenever people team up. It's just stupid.
Though worse is 2v2 where your teammate just tries to grab over and over and dies in the first ten seconds, leaving you to face two focused specials. Fun... Sarcasm, of course.

Ended up having some fun with Volleyball 1v1's. It's about hitting the ball at times, trying to decide at every moment when you should and shouldn't set up a spike. Because if you do and it gets countered, you're in for a rough time. Don't really like 2v2 Volleyball without voice comm. I noticed the people playing splitscreen always won their 2v2 Volleyballs, probably because you can easily work out who will set up and who will spike.

2v2 is okay if it's an even match.
1v1v1 is stupid in every regard because SOMEONE is going to get ganged up on, or someone's going to sit in a corner, and you can't stop them because the other one is an idiot who doesn't realize we're both going to lose to a corner-sitter. Had one particular round that was funny, though, where someone tried to corner sit but after a few seconds I and the other player noticed and we telepathically told each other, "Yeah, let's get this sucker out." Took them down quick, and then had ourselves a 1v1 without someone just sitting to take the win.

88 was the highest in the lobby, and I had 80.

Game is fun, I'm a bit glad I'm not a HUGE fan, though. Because I can't afford it next month, lol.

Is this not an issue at all with motion controls?

Also it's not like fighting game inputs, because if I want to move my body left but keep curving right, there's no way to do that. Punch shifts with stick.

This party mode in general is complete garbage. Just let me select the mode I want, Nintendo.

Fuck it ended 🙁 I could have played all night.

So I gave the Pro Controller a try and I did terrible. So I went back to motion controls and the. I won 75% of my matches and ended up in first place in my lobby. I guess the motion controls just suit me better.

This game is a winner. It has everything I want in an online multiplayer game. I preordered it instantly after the test punch earlier and now I'm even more hooked after the second test punch

switching from pro back to motion is really difficult. keep trying to hit X and Y to dash and jump. really wish the movement was bound to the analogue stick :T

still i like motion a lot more than controller just because it makes me feel vaguely active lol

Welp, actually tried other characters this time. Was okay with Minmin and Ninjara, Spring Man I was sorta alright with, didn't win with him but kept getting close. Helix and the Mummy dude went terribly, could not get into their movement. I mean it was just one quick try so I'd probably be able to if I had tried a little more but still. Mummy especially, the damage you can do with him is crazy though.
Ribbon Girl, Minmin and Ninjara's movements are more my style for sure.

Finally got in. Played as the Mummt and Noja guy.

"grapple" to activate spike mode

The supers feel like some Jojo shit when you use motion

ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA

Got up to 80 thinking I was the shit since I was at the top of my lobby and then this Ninjara came out of nowhere and whopped me bad. It was humbling.

After the test earlier I wasn't sure, but after playing another hour i will definitely be picking this up. I don't think there was a single match I didn't enjoy (aside from when my doubles partner dropped out, but even then I think i put up a pretty good fight). The one free for all with 4 players I had was the best kind of madness. I can't wait for the next test.

Switched to non-motion controls midway through the 2nd (4th I guess, but *my* 2nd) test session.

I don't think I'll go back. There are some things motion controls are good for -- throwing punches constantly is kind of the point, and it's almost impossible not to do with the motions controls considering how sensitive they are -- but it's just way more precise to be able to decouple your mobility from your attacks.

Self scout: I'm ok at 1v1, eh at 1v1v1 (it's a blast though), 2v2 is great, volleyball is fun but I suck at it, and 1v1v1v1 I am complete trash at. (probably awful at all these and getting perma-elo'd to a low tier. alas)

Playing exclusively as Min Min, because I'm not a savage

e: I still don't know how to block using button controls. That is ok though, just don't get hit

Had a ton of fun! Its great playing with people on your skill level. If any one here I played with is on NeoGaf then awesome, add as friends :P

EDIT: Just realised, but my trigger fingers are aching a bit. The Pro controller triggers are a bit too sharp on the tips perhaps ...

You already know you'll be able to do that in the main game. God forbid they show off variety to everyone that thought the game didn't have enough to do.

I don't know that, though. I see no option for it in the main menu.

This game is also from the same team that decided that you shouldn't be able to only play 150cc online matches in Mario Kart. You have to join a lobby that will randomly select from 50cc-200cc each race. You never get to choose.

Finally to have a go. Didnt enjoy it at all. Needed more time with just being able to do something in single player or repeat the first first fight they put you in. Went into matches and unless there was another opponent in the round, I couldnt even get a single hit.

I was using gamepad controls and the aftertouch swing of the fists was shitting me up the wall. If I am dodging left or right, then it follows that as I punch i am naturally going to be pushing my fists away from an opponent, so instead of being able to hit anything, I was just constantly throwing punches to the outside.

Maybe its different with motion controls but that aspect was driving me up the wall and I just found the whole thing frustrating.

First time playing. Holy smokes that was sweet!! The first 30 or so mins I wasn't doing to well, as I wasn't performing the jump and dodge mechanics correctly. Once I figured those out, I suddenly was winning a LOT more! Also, I really felt good as Mechanica and loved her Super. Got up to 60 or so.

Also, I just want to confirm that you CAN move the joycons forward and back, and not just side to side as it shows in the instructions? I think I was moving forward when tilting forward, but was sort of hard to tell with all of the grabs going on, etc.

Only played Mummy and changed Fists depending on the enemy this time around. I also used the Joycon Grip because I lack the Pro Controller. It still played even better than on the Handheld and well, I am quite pleased with the result:

There were some players that definitely knew what they were doing, some very, very close wins and some close losses too. I was lucky to get 1v1 most of the time, I'm also acing volleyball now...
