ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

These are also genius. Though it releasing on June 16 makes the excellent spring release feel anachronistic very quickly.

It's great because Nintendo has many times declared games to be for a specific time of year only to release a day or two before the season technically changes.

So no one can find the DNA Lab music anywhere online?

The internet has failed me.

Yes, unfortunately there is no way to get song files of Nintendo Switch games yet (as the files are encrypted and Switch hasn't been hacked) so the only way to get the music is to record each song individually in-game and then edit the pieces together. This is a rather time consuming process. But as the Testpunch was online only, there was no way to get the songs without sound effects, since your opponent is always a random person who wouldn't just stand still.

I've been uploading songs of the games (with extended versions) to my Nintendo soundtrack YT channel and I'll be uploading other ARMS songs as soon as the game launches.

Here's the ARMS playlist.

Guys, help me.

How does one actually go about buying the download code for this game from Amazon.jp?

Do I need to make a Japanse account on my Switch? Will I be able to install the game in English if I use this Japanese code or are codes international?

You don't need to make a Japanese account; as long as you don't have any balance in your current account, you can just change your current account to Japanese, and, after downloading the game, change it back! It's amazing.

Not all, but most games so far are a single binary for the whole world, and ARMS will not be an exception. You will download this game off the Japanese eShop, but it will play in whatever language you have your console set to.

There seems to be scaling on non-charged attacks, but no scaling if you juggle with a charged hit.

When the super or health field appears, my opponent has three choices: Leave it for me to get, go in and risk getting blown up for having to stand relatively still to stay inside, or stand nearby guarding to make sure I can't just waltz in.

Novice players seem to go right for it and usually get punished. People also seem to like going for throws once they see someone inside, which leaves them wide open to a counter attack.

I kinda highlighted a situation where I was cock blocked and punished for not being near the item spawn. The fact that the options I had access to dramatically changed just because I wasn't near the thing at the time is actually pretty lame and feeds into Magnet Man's points.

Not that it matters since I'm pretty sure that items will be turned off in open tournaments anyway, it's just that online ranked will be a semi blowup unless someone can establish the pattern and timing for item spawns.

That said, this game was not designed with tournaments or competitive play in mind. If I was a tournament organizer running an Arms event, I would not be happy.

Marvel had XFC and SFV still (?) has that thumbs up system for rematch (and something something 6.5 frames... actually, this game has banned stages too and I've seen dudes go back to character select twice because they got the beach stage lol), so I'm not actually sure where you keep going with this lol

Even if something is clunky, people will play it in tournament as long as the demand is high enough and that's normally all that matters.

(it seems like the tech now is to throw money around... though I'm not sure this would actually work with KOF and that game is forever dead on arrival despite the recent entry being really great :v)

Arms will probably at least reach anime side tournament status given how the Switch is set up (and the large install base and probably some degree of crossover with people playing Smash), so I'm not exactly worried about finding people to play this thing with.

Also, the movement tech in the game is very interesting and significantly more complicated than I thought it would be (I honestly thought that the options were going to be really straightforward in this area). The gimmick for 2v2 is pretty interesting too since it seems like you have to coordinate heavily with your teammate and the game surrounding throws is pretty different (you have times where you need to react to them to save your team from getting bodied).

Anyway, the game will be fine, but will probably have to deal with whatever it is that Smash players deal with when people shit on their game despite all the work they put in.

Beep beep Systems...all clear...36 hours...until...the Test Punch

It's interesting they used the single player boss for the tweet. Combined with the message it makes me think he may make an appearance during the Testpunch?! Probably not, but it'd be cool if you get randomly thrown in a battle against him once in a while instead of fighting against other people.

As cool as that sounds, I hope not. I want it to remain a secret till we get to play ourselves.

He actually looks menacing lol.

Those teeth remind me of McDonald's mascot.

Woah, there's a rematch option lol

EDIT:

No character or amrs lock though, so you can get bodied during the counter counter pick lol

Did we get a confirmation on whether we can choose what modes we want to play online in the full game?

This will effect my purchasing decision. I loved 1v1 but hated the 4 player modes.

So that guy on reddit was basically full of shit?

I liked ranked being somewhat locked. It prevents scrubs from shitting up online without some base level of competency

I mean, the matchmaking being rank based should already ensure that.

I am dissapointed the stage selection is random, even worse it happens after the character pick.

Just play ranked since it'll be 1v1 all the time (maybe? 2v2 would be the other option, but I don't think they'll toss you in with randoms) and no items.

Disappointed with Grand Prix mode. Was hoping the presentation would have a bit more to it. Minimal effort has gone in to the main single player mode. A shame. Still, the multiplayer offering is solid.

Ha, no items in ranked. People were freaking out over nothing it seems.

I'm so happy that there are custom rooms with their own rules that can even be shared by code (a bit like Mario Kart 8D).

edit: wait wait, so there are no public party match lobbies shared by code? Oh.... :S

Not necessarily. Everyone sucking doesn't mean matches won't have a winner. You can easily go up in rank purely by winning, despite not being very good (and simply by being slightly better than other people who aren't good either)

For anyone interested, I uploaded the 10 theme/stage songs of each fighter. Currently uploading 30 minute extended versions. Some are already up.

Anyone got an updated countdown gif for this weekend?

Those official GIFs? I posted the one from today above.
