ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

To the japanese min min who couldn't stop grabbing the level 6 hedlok we almost beat

you are everything that is wrong with the world and literally the only reason I'm at 98 instead of one hundred

words cannot describe my salt

Is this against a Ninjara? I don't know why, but at one moment, Ninjara was really popular and they were all using the same technic.
They wait for you to attack, they avoid it and then do a grab.
My technic, send me slow punch, wait for them to do their slide and then throw my light quick punch to counter the grab.

No, Ninjara was what everyone was at first using it for. But Grab for days is a solid way to win with any character. You can grab a person, then grab them right as they get up, and over and over.

Really enjoying my time with arms this weekend. After last weekend I was thinking of cancelling my preorder but everything has clicked this time around. I still get a bit frustrated with the motion controls from time to time but that's because in tense situations I stop focusing on how I'm holding the joycons and things get out of control. When I'm focuses everything goes exactly as it should.

I'm in a similar boat, though I think will still cancel preorder. Had a heck of a time tonight, both getting beaten and winning, but it felt, well, dull. I just wanted to go back to persona and overwatch. Can't see putting enough time into this. Was hoping for a punch-out revival; this is not that.

Cool IP, glad some of you enjoy it. I really want to like it...

I feel like Headlock isn't really balanced right between its different forms.

There is no way to balance someone who can be any character and have dupes of any combination of arms

No, Ninjara was what everyone was at first using it for. But Grab for days is a solid way to win with any character. You can grab a person, then grab them right as they get up, and over and over.

You really can't unless they don't move out of the way. You have invincibility frames when standing up, but the game allows you to move during them, so you can easily move out of the way

Also, I didn't think I'd like hoops (especially over volleyball), but it's cool. There's a definite strategy to the way you approach it. You can't spam grabs, and baiting and throwing from far away gives you more points obvious. Anyone know what causes you to brick/miss a shot?

114 points undefeated as Twintelle, feels good.

Would have been 121 had I not disconnected from a winning Hoops game and if teammates had not grab spammed Hedlok in two games.

This sums up my Testpunch:

DBcE_3-VYAAQ0ab.jpg
Oh, also, managed to beat the boss once! It was my Twintelle and two Ninjaras. It was awesome.

Its broken even when I'm the one using it to win. Which is just as often

You can dodge grabs punish, punch their arms, out deflect grabs with your own grab.

Anybody that relies too much on throwing is very easy to deal with once you know how to handle them.

I think grabs are really bad tbh. It's super hard to actually land one in neutral, I pretty much only punish other throws or followup electric with it.

I got my wife to play with me for the first time. We both had fun, but since she wasn't as skilled, we got schooled lot. It made the times we won much sweeter though! Even against Headlock a couple times.

Was on my worst form this round but still held my own, my hands fall asleep when playing with the switch in handheld mode!

Still do not care for 2v2. I really don't. I'm getting very close to hating this mode. Others I like and enjoy a lot and others less so but this is getting bad. I do not like this mode. I do not like being tethered to another player. I'm constantly being hit by my partners attacks or accidentally hitting them.

Although I suck a the game, I had a great time. I don't play online multiplayer a lot these days because I'm fed up with people shouting at me. So actually I'm quite happy that the MP is silent. Must sound silly, I know

Not at all. I automatically mute everyone unless I know who the person is. The only games I really care to have voice chat on and it's by choice is in mmorpgs when it comes to a raid and maybe some group type situations. Mainly because you really have to have a no-nonsense and somewhat professional atmosphere to get some of that stuff done. I also tend to find mmorpgs just on average more mature (not by age but how they carry themselves). Not all the time but on average from what I've seen over the years.

The really need to tone down the Hedlok fights. Twice in a row on Ninjara's stage is fucking ridiculous. At least it was Level 4 the second time so it was actually beatable.

Turns out I just suck at hoops. Shut out twice in a row. Feels bad man.

Hoops is garbage. It felt like 90% of my dunks bounced off the rim today. Also if you accidentally pick a character like Helix you can't do shit.

Yeah I gave it one more shot. Fourth testpunch and I didn't even finish it. I'm just not having fun.

Motion controls are nice sometimes, but bad enough times that it's not skill if you win maybe a quarter of the time. I throw punches when I meant to block, throws when I mean to punch, etc. Curving the pinches doesn't feel great either because there's only a few arms that actually curve with any significance. The better I get at the controls and more I understand them, the more it feel completely lacking.

The traditional controls were designed by someone who maybe has never seen a controller before? In both modes, tying your movement to the same control as directing punches is absolutely insane. You have two sticks and individual motion for the joycons and two sticks and singular motion w traditional and the best most fun feeling control they can come up with is to have to stop moving to control where your punch goes? I can't break my instinct to use the right stick to control my punches because it just makes sense.l, instead of fighting the controls to do any single thing I actually want to do.

The only mode that feels like there's real strat is one on one, or free for all too actually. The 2v2 w the rope is stupid unless you can communicate. You just wind up flying around and you're so close to your teammate you're just gonna get hit by an errant arm. Maybe it's better w communication but as there isn't any online it just feels like a game of get lucky and not get bit by random punches.

Boss fights are bleh, the punches are so fast it's not like you can Dodge much or anything, though this might be because I have a hard time blocking w motion because it always throws out a grab and in traditional control blocking is pressing on the stick which is hard to do in the moment.

Volleyball doesn't feel consistent at all. Bball barely has come up but the fact that actual throws don't always equal a pt is just randomness. (Yeah I know closer is better, but it's still random).

I'm sorry I'm ranting in a thread where the majority like it. I really want to like it. I love the premise and the promise of what the game should be, but it's not clicking for me at all. It feels clunky and random. Maybe I'll get it down the road and it'll click for me then. Or maybe they'll update the game with traditional controls that make sense or a hybrid control where you can use the pro controller gyro, that would be awesome and actually make use of the features of these controllers in a way that works for the game the best and most fun way.

I hope I'm just not getting it and I'm horribly wrong and two weeks from now I come back apologizing for being stupid. I really want to enjoy this but it's just pure frustration.

More perfects than ever that round, but apparently I don't know how to play Hoops, considering my opponent bounced off the rim three times in a row.

101 this time. I've done better, but I'll take it. Highest score in my lobby.

There was this nasty Ninjara with a Japanese name that played keepaway with his sliver of extra HP, lol.

Also, I am the slammaster of Hoops.

They are not bad, I think the RNG for mode selection is tilted towards them this weekend (never saw it last weekend). Haven't seen any volleyball this weekend either...

I think they need some pro-tips for it on the loading screen, though. I didn't realize grabs were a no no until I saw the complaints in this thread.

I think grabs are really bad tbh. It's super hard to actually land one in neutral, I pretty much only punish other throws or followup electric with it.

I only use them to punish bad punches and bad grab attempts, but never throw them out myself because it's just asking for me to get screwed hard.
What advantages do traditional controls have? I never really used them.
IDK how to describe it better than this, but I felt like I had more control over my movement and jumping/dodging with traditional controls, while I had more control over my punches and their directionality with motion controls.

A big lesson I personally learned this go was that ground dodging is something I should definitely be doing more overall. While jumping then dodging is cool, it leaves you way open to grabs unless you're Ninjara or Min Min.

Played in handheld and holy shit I learned you could hold dash for further movement AND to charge attacks. Fucking holy shit. I feel controller play is mandatory just to get a handle on possibilities and input and then maybe graduate to motion controls once you understand the bounds of what curve inputs can be and what button press and holds do. Never would have figured this out in only motion.

Also let the stick (left or right) toggle lock on in motion control. Was so nice to just flick the right stick to change target on handheld.

Thanks to anyone watching my stream earlier. Was so bad in the beginning with that good comp. I wanna blame working out earlier and all the yard work I did, but it is what it is. xD Thankfully I got my groove back after
a couple of drinks
putzing around with Master Mummy and coming back to Twintelle and eventually pulled ahead.

My muscle memory kept transferring over to the other characters from TT so bad. xD

I'll stream tomorrow continuing with motion controls for funsies.

Sure, but its WAY to easy to abuse it and just grab your way to victory.

That's because you're playing people who don't know any better. And I'd say you don't know better either if you think that. Grabs are so unbelievably easy to deal with if you just stop throwing both of your punches as soon as you can, aren't super close, and aren't standing stationary. And yes, all three of those being done at the same time for grabs to be "over powered".

Any punch not only breaks the grab attempt but will continue forward to hit the person trying to grab. If you're fighting a grab spammer, just throw one punch and then when they air dash to do a grab, throw your other punch to punish.

omg just tried Ribbon girl for the first time and she's absolutely broken, I feel sorry for everyone who played against me tonight.

112 Coins

Feels good

EXCEPT THAT FUCKING MASTER MUMMY, 100+ COINS AND ALL HE DOES IS GRAB, FOR THE FUCK OF GOD

I faced him sporadically throughout the hour and every single time he just grabbed, jump grabbed, or punched with no rhythm to it. And every single time I just swatted his grab away with a charged megawatt and then dragon'd him. I had 3-4 matches with him and they kept repeating themselves. 200 damage grabs in 2v2 with the chaos and rope probably helped him net easy wins. It's fucking bonkers to me that this worked for him enough to get 100 coins and for him to not change his playstyle despite easily punishing it.

Oh also completely decimated Hedlok a few times. I was with a Mechanica who had the stun revolver or whatever and it just completely destroys hedlok. Combine that with constant megawatt punches with minmin dragon arm and we had hedlok on fucking lockdown. 6 arms constantly down and just punching over and over until it died. It was fucking great. Each hit of stun is 2ish arms, but if you keep it up then you can have all 6 down constantly. So goooooooooood.

I know, right? It feels awesome. That being said, there are kind of hard counters in homing shots and vertical 3 shots, but no one has access to those rn, so bomb away.

Beat a lvl 6 headlock with 4 seconds before the clock ran out, damn you basically have to be perfect with your teammates on this, I can't imagine how lvl 7 would be.

What advantages do traditional controls have? I never really used them.

Easier to block with less mistakes and easier to move (more of advantage I think in V-Ball over all other modes because of the camera. I can move just fine in other modes with motion.). Easier to switch targets as well because of the button layout. Actual attacks and I would say dodging and jumping is easier with motion.

Well you saw my post (maybe) literally 3 minutes earlier than yours. I agree, it does feel a bit clunky (and clumsy too, as like you noted the natural inclination is to use the right stick to veer punches). It just doesn't feel natural. Cool game cool concept, but I would be surprised to see universal praise.

Purposely switched lobbies so I didn't have to track how bad my final score was.

But man, still incredibly fun. Started out as a Spring Girl fan, but both Min Min and Twintelle can hold their own in most of the match varieties.

I was only able to play one period throughout the whole Testpunch so far, and I'm pretty bad at this game. Nonetheless, I really like the mechanics and find it really fun. On the topic of grabs, I actually won the smoothest victory I had by countering them. They're really easy to just punch through with one arm, especially if you keep distance between yourself and the opponent. As soon as I saw the grab coming, I just threw a quick single punch and then followed up.

I felt the opposite, so your response is very interesting to me.

And I would really like the option to bind block to a button that isn't what it is now.

Mmm, now that I switched to Zangief and hitting nearly 100pts in an hour, the game is growing on me. Still find the movement really unresponsive, but overall good fun

More perfects than ever that round, but apparently I don't know how to play Hoops, considering my opponent bounced off the rim three times in a row.

I dunno what you could be doing wrong. Every single time I landed the shot. Best game was when I was 8 to 8 against someone and slammed them on a spring and they landed in the basket, netting me a 13 total.

And another hilarious thing was when I did a 2v2...and my partner died. Ended up losing. Game right after I was put against him. I got a perfect on him. Made me laugh.

Also I think skillshot is fun. Just try to grab the opponents and flip them before the targets come up so you can break more before they do. I'm honestly loving every mode.

Had a lot of fun with Twintelle this time. Umbrella in the left and regular fist in the right. That freeze charge is a lot of fun.

Nailed a few perfects.

Level 4 Hedlock - Down!

Level 5 Hedlock - Destroyed!

Level 6 Hedlock - Dominated!

Level 7 Hedlock - Now hold on a moment :(

**********

Those were some good fights there. Everyone knew not to attempt to throw during a partner's Rush, and every fist thrown had elemental damage behind it. But Level 7 was a whole new ballgame of hurt. EVERY hit has to land and be dodged because if you're down, you're not raking in the damage. By an inch of by a mile, Hedlock takes the win. And rightfully so; it's quasi-two vs three after all!

Hoops is a nice distraction, and great training for baiting throws. At one point I got a perfect 12 with the finishing score being a Rush. Does that score go higher than 12, btw?

On 1-v-1 my go-to strategy for small arenas is to dash forward, jump forward, poof forward (Ninjara), grab. I'm surprised at how much it kept working. But after that, since people are being matched with those of equal skill, shit gets techincal. Going on 30-second stretches of dodging, feinting, blocking fists and grabs, poking here and there, matches being decided by +/- slivers at 75% health on both sides.

You know...

...This game maybe be kinda cool somewhat.

I think mapping punch curving to the movement stick is an interesting control decision (seems like maybe a tradeoff to make motion controls more appealing), but I think it's a reach to call ARMS's controls poor or not well thought out. The game plays really really well.

There are outstanding questions about balancing (only time will tell), whatever the meta ends up being, and how good the *game* part of ARMS actually is. But I think the controls are excellent.
