Arms Review Thread

Seems pretty divisive so far. Is this going to be the fate of all motion controlled games or is something else dividing the opinions of reviewers?

Don't think you can call it a consensus when there's such a high variance.

I haven't seen any reviews disagreeing with either of my points though. I guess some could find that it's not fun, or could find that there's a ton of content.

Critical reviews are concerned about longevity, while most if not all agree that it is a very enjoyable game to play while it lasts.

Seems like the perfect rental for me.

It's at 81 now, I fear 85 is out of the picture though. I guess it's not bad for a new IP with not that much SP content.

This is pretty mixed, way more mixed than I was expecting

I considered this to be around a 60-70

60-70 is just silly imo, a solid 8 was about what I figured, game is fun as hell, just could use more single player content from what I've gathered from previews and such, with the reviews now confirming as much. The free DLC and such should help maintain interest though, at least for me anyways.

I think a lot of the variance is likely due to new ip status and the lack of content that sometimes comes with? The sequel (assuming there is one) is likely going to have a lot more just because it can build on the existing characters.

Replayability in most fighting games depends entirely on the depth of its systems though.

I had more fun with ARMS the entire duration of the Testpunch while Splatoon kind of got a bit dry for me without the content, so I'm not too concerned about longevity.

Good shit so far. Funny how the reception mirrors that of Splatoon.

~81 average seems like the complete opposite of divisive.

Honestly, I am terrible at fighting games. But am getting a second set of joycons to play with my girlfriend. It'll be silly and fun and something we can do when we travel back home. I am looking for a easy-to-play yet light-hearted and fun fighter so this seems perfect for me and the girlfriend.

Seems divisive, still don't know if I'll buy it or wait for a sa-- lol it will be the same price four years from now T__T

I hope they expand the universe with free updates, because as of right now, it is a little barebones.

Yeah, I totally expect this to be around Splatoon's review score, maybe slightly lower. Still getting it, the long term support will hopefully be great!

Well I've been playing the full game for over a week and I've experienced all there is to do and the gameplay is not varied enough for me at al, most of my play time has felt nearly exactly the same despite which weapons I utilize under any combination.

I didn't think the characters were different enough in that same breathe and that's not even considering the blatant lack of any real single player or substance, I also wasn't a fan of most of the party modes or anything that wasn't 1v1 actually

I'll mention I like fighting games but I'm simply used to more in this day and age

It's a Nintendo game, if you're lucky you get it 5 dollar/euro cheaper used from someone that dropped the game. But as they will keep publishing DLCs for free it will be hard to get a used copy I guess...

- It's a fighting game
- It has motion controls
- lack of content but promising free updates
- New IP

Scores are just as expected

It's nice to see a new IP reviewing pretty positively.

Yeah this looks like what I expected so far. If it clicks, you really like it. It seems like a game that really depends on that click happening though.

Still, solid start for a new IP. Had fun with the testpunch, just not sure if I'll bite the bullet or not at launch. Hopefully the DLC is awesome.

Yep. As someone that didn't feel the click in the test punch I ended up thinking the game was completely mediocre.

Actually, the minority are criticizing the game for content being lacking over the motion controls.

But you see more 5s and assume that's the case... amirite? ;)

Lack of stuff to do definitely seems to be the overall consensus, with a solid foundation to build on.

Like the USG review says, this game will likely look very different a year from now.

it was $50 on amazon (not limited to prime members) during the first testpunch weekend

Sounds like an interesting fighting game that ends up being pretty light on content. Pretty much what I expected. Still excited!

Which is probably a good thing as it's also an indication of the weapons and characters being balanced well enough.

Sounds about what I expected. Starting thin and expanding over time will always lead to worries about content, but all I want anyway is the ranked online 1v1 mode. Testpunch sold me on gameplay, and I can't wait to dive into this in a week!

Well they will provide free content. Feels like Splatoon all over again.

Game is getting the same dlc treatment as the first Splatoon.

And Overwatch.

Noted in the review!

Arms is a game I like more in theory than actually playing it. It often feels like a shell for a could-be great game. The depth is there, as is the strategy. With more arms, fighters, and stages eventually on the way this year incrementally, like Splatoon's regularly updated model, I imagine a year from now Arms will be a much different (and much better) game.

Seems about right. I don't expect this to reach Splatoon levels of popularity, but it should be a solid seller.

I just don't find the characters memorable or interesting at all.

That was to be expected, I guess it's also Injustice's fault. ARMS should have had some kind of Story mode for SP I think...

I'm not really sure how they'd do a full-blown Story Mode of ARMS given the Roster size

The only thing Nintendo should've stated prior to ARMS launching is how long will their post-game support for it last? 3 months? 6 months? Something inbetween? Because that's really where you say 'do I float this score higher or not?' based on that fact alone. Splatoon may have been an 8/10 game, but became a 9/10 one by the end.

I saw the review in the OP stating bad controls followed by a few 5s and 6s in consecutive posts, hence my question.

Don't think you can call it a consensus when there's such a high variance.

You can, because a consensus can form more than just the score. How much the replayability weighs on an individual reviewer is where the variance is, not the experience.

Over at USgamer, our reviewer gave the game a 3 out of 5. They loved the core gameplay, but felt it was kind of thin on overall content.

Damn, that's not good to hear.

In the end, after all the DLC, I bet the game will have:

15 fighters
45 total arms
5 new stages so 15 total?
A couple of new modes for party mode

That would be a great foundation for the sequel but I can see how reviewers might have issue with that content not being available now.

Which is probably a good thing as it's also an indication of the weapons and characters being balanced well enough.

I guess that's one way of putting it, in which case why have any combinations in the first place other than just to say you have options

BIG THING I FORGOT TO MENTION
This game is super fun to play with friends, I imagine that's a huge selling point here
