Ars Technica: Retail Patapon 2 IS UMD-free

28hn33q.jpg

Will buy (off the PSN store)

Thank god, and are people forgetting it's fucking Patapon for as low as $15??

PSN games have shown me that the best games do not need a plastic box and disc to enjoy. And so can you.

Sorry. I just...don't understand. Personally I think DD is a great use for portable games, what's more portable than digital? If Sony was asking an iffy price I'd understand, but they're knocking $5 off instead.

Unless you're not a fan of Patapon in the first place I dunno how this can't be seen as anything other than a fantastic deal. There are far worse DD-only console games selling by the bucketloads for $15.

For those of you who don’t want to change out of your jammies to go shopping:
On Thursday May 7th, Patapon 2 will go up on the PlayStation Network for your download pleasure.

What about us, the faithful pre-order-ees?

Well, you guys will get what’s coming to ya… via mail, or whatever form of shipping you requested from the online shop you pre-ordered from. If you have any questions, please contact the retailer you pre-ordered from.

Of course there are hundreds of questions you must have about Patapon 2 as a digital only version, how to download, how to install, other Patapon 2 features, etc… and the answers will come to you via this blog, on the same pata-time, in the same pata-channel so stay tuned.

Forcing every game to cater to everyone is not the way to get good games for anybody.

Wonder how long it will be before we start seeing Wiiware, PSN, and XBLA games being sold like this at retail. Would definitely help to give them more exposure.

Going to hold off on buying this, hoping there's some sort of fallback plan at Sony to release a UMD down the line as part of the "experiment"

I don't understand, everyone and their mothers hate UMD yet when Sony does something to rid of UMD altogether, many cry out for UMD again.

Well, it's actually easy to understand. Not everyone hates UMD.

The only (little) problem with UMD was linked to the battery life, and maybe, to a lesser extend, size. If they want to get rid of UMD, seing the price of memory now, I'd rather pay a plus to get games on carts rather than using a download service.

I think UMD has a couple of small flaws, but I think this is far worse, personally.

Go on, can't just leave it at that.

I love physical media, I would hate to see the next wave of consoles or my movie formats in DD only.

But DD has its place and I really don't understand how anyone can prefer UMD's over DD for the PSP. At least those who have TRIED it out with multiple things like PSN games, PS1 games from the PSN (yea, theres a couple) or a modded PSP with LEGIT ripped UMD games. Seriously, when you see the difference between FF Crisis Core on UMD and off your stick, its amazing. And I know few people played it but if you get the opportunity try playing that Marvel Trading Card game on UMD and then off of your stick. Holy mother of god the difference there is absolutely astounding.

Coupled with the fact that everything is right there on your stick. I don't care if you have a carrying case for your UMD's or not, 0 UMD's to carry around is better than anything. It's not like you see people clamoring to carry cassete tapes or CD's around instead of iPods. And when you can save money on the downloads, like you SHOULD, thats better. I expect a different lighter experience with my portable games so the more reasonable prices for them is acceptable. I'm not looking for a $60 CE of Patapon 2 to keep on my shelf, I just want to play it once in awhile.

I can't wait until you physical medium guys come around to digital only. You'll come around... Especially once you realize what a horrible waste physical media is.

Although I do understand your fears about drm and ownership, but just look at itunes and amazon mp3. Itunes came around and amazong has been drm free since it started. It's all going that way, don't worry.

No buy from me either. Fuck DD.

As someone already stated, you can get the game from Europe if you really want to play it. Yeah I know it's tough not being able to get ripped off selling that 20 dollar game back to Gamestop for 5 dollars but if ALL you care about is the physical disc then buy it from Europe and stop your bitching. That goes for all of you boneheads.

Unless by chance, you're bitching to bitch because that's what message board posters do. If that's the case, carry on.

hmm.

PSP games are region free. But I'm guessing this download is only available from the US PSN store? Do you need a PSN account set up? Can you buy this from the US and then download/play it in the UK for example? DD might screw up the region free element of portable games.

I think honestly all the rage here is just the fact that Patapon 2 has been released in other regions as UMDs, but only DD here. If it was DD across the board on all regions, this would have been an non-issue.

Interestingly enough, Echochrome had the same issue (UMD in JP/EU, DD only in NA), why wasn't there a big fuss about that one?

It is available for Download from both Japan and EU as well.

And yes, you can use a US/JPN PSN account on your EU PSP for example and play games. You can only have your system tied to one account at a time though so you can't easily switch between a handful of accounts like on the PS3 (you will have to delete old and login with new on PSP, content will still be stored no matter what though).

I have a modded PSP, only lately I have been ripping my games on the stick because until some time ago I was still going with the default 32MB stick (I only modded the PSP to run it at 333mhz) and the games load so much quicker, it's really cool.
Still, I woldn't buy DD only games. I want the physical copy of the game. I'm not opposed to DD, I'm opposed to DD only with no physical copy.
Why is it so hard for some people to understand that almost no one is against DD, but many are against DD ONLY?
Just like the people that keep saying "everyone hates UMD, but when Sony takes UMD away, everyone still hates Sony! Sony never wins!". No, not everyone hates UMDs. Many do, but not everyone, so why act surprised when people aren't happy the moment Sony takes something away from them?

Because there are many of us who buy games because we want to play them, not because we want to form a collection of useless plastic boxes on our shelves.

The idea that someone will choose to not buy this game because they want to make some political statement about DD-only games is absurd to me. Many of the best games of this generation - Bionic Commando, Braid, Flower, Geometry Wars 2 - have been DD-only. Is it really worth missing out on great games just because you're not getting a plastic trinket?

Europe: March 12; €29.99
USA: May 7; $14.99

That's right... $40 vs. $15.
Doesn't make sense considering that the retail copy of the game has been out a month and is half the price.

I wonder if this is also a way for Sony to fight piracy.

Like, put some kind of code in the ISO so that if you download it from anywhere else besides the Sony server, the game won't work.

600mb isn't shit.

No kidding. Blim posts videos larger than that on Gamersyde a few times a week. :lol

Lots of stores sell it for €29.99. That's the list price.

Europeans buying from the UK (£19.99) can get it for €15-20 though. :)

If they're going to have a retail box they should have included a UMD and also have it available on the PSN that would have been a better "test".

I have the right to complain. I'm a potential customer and I don't like this choice they made. I want a physical item to hold in my hand not something I may have to juggle around between my PSP and memory sticks.

Everyone always bitches about UMDs but I have no problems with them.

Most people saying no buy are probably people who never planned to buy it.

To me, it's always a question of price when it comes to downloadable games. What would REALLY make me happy and more likely to pay for them is being able to play them on my PS3 too if I buy them for PSP. I don't have a PSP now but eventually maybe if the new one isn't too expensive and has good games (more RPGs!).

I don't have a PSP so i was wondering something, does the PSN store uses some form of DRM?
You can't play it on a Nintendo/other platform? :p

But basically, your account can be active on 5 systems simultaneously. De-activating a system is very easily done via the XMB.

You can redownload your bought stuff an infinite number of times until the end of time.

*as long as that isn't movies/tv show content due to big movie corporations, max 2 redownloads for those

btw guys, saying you won't buy isn't going to do anything.

this is gonna happen. and sorry to mess up anyone's ego, but people who makes these decisions don't look at Neogaf for their answers, and rightfully so.

I wouldn't be surprised if that happens before PS2 emulation to be honest. They did talk about it in the past, and with the state of piracy on PSP, it could only help sw-sales now.

600mb isn't shit.

I have 6 Mb, thank you

Downloading 600 (or 1600 with games like God of War, Resistance Resistance Retribution) mb with the psp is a pain in the ass and storing 600 mb per game - at least -, in a tiny storage solution (4/8 Gb MS) is worse than the "wii fridge" situation.

I'll wait and see what's Sony's plan but they'll have to do a lot of changes and improvements for DD-only to be viable

Did they go the route of teasing people with a case that cost an extra $5?
