Customer data has been stolen from Ashley Madison, an online dating website for married people who wish to cheat on their spouse.

The hackers said they had obtained information including "all the customers' secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions".
The site's operator confirmed there had been an "intrusion" but not its extent.
Security expert Brian Krebs said a small percentage of the site's user account data had been published online.

The hackers, who call themselves Impact Team, said they had managed to steal the real names and addresses of the site's users, including those who had previously paid to "delete" their accounts.
Ashley Madison, which promotes its service with the tagline "life is short, have an affair", says it has more than 37 million users.

Avid Life Media, which owns the website, said in a statement: "We apologise for this unprovoked and criminal intrusion into our customers' information."
"We have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorised access points.
"Any and all parties responsible for this act of cyber-terrorism will be held responsible."
In May, casual dating website Adult Friend Finder was also hacked. Thousands of its customer records were leaked online.

Haha, going to be a lot of nervous people out there.

If the hackers set up some "bitcoins for anonymity" site, they will rake in the cash.

And this is why you never give out your personal information on the internet.

The fuck? 37 MILLION people registered on that site?

Considering there are probably tons of people who have affairs without the use of that site, are there any married couples left who aren't cheating?

Probably about a billion alt accounts, bot created accounts and people that aren't married at all.

Pay to delete your account? That is genius

It's like the perfect blackmail: "Hey, you don't want to be associated with us anymore? That doesn't come for free!"
I can see a new buisiness model emerging out of this!

god knows how many of those are fake accounts or inactive accounts that they still consider users, and single people trying to get laid.

Parents been married 25 years, most people in my family have had steady relationships

Infidelity is probably a situation occurring in 20-50% of the couples. Not that many people if you think about it.

My friend (no, honestly, I'm not married) used this site and I was blown away by how quickly and easily he found hookups. I thought this was mostly a US only thing with like a few curious europeans signed up, like 99% of all online communities are, but there are apparently enough people on this site for there to be quite a selection even in my small european country. That's really rare for global online communities.

Who am I to judge peoples decisions? What annoys me is people giving out their real life personal information as if they are handing out candy.
Not everyone lives in the US. In my country, personal information is not secret and a thief can't do a damn thing with it.

"[P]eople giving out their real life personal information as if they are handing out candy" is also a decision. A person's decision you are judging.

There is a big difference between judging a choice like cheating and not estimating the repercussions of giving out personal information.

One is judgement based on moral values, the other is calling out ignorance. I don't think this is comparable at all.

That was my first thought when sites like this started popping up, what if they are hacked. Some real nervous people out there now lol.

It's mainly single people who pretend to be married because they fantasize about sleeping with a married person ... and prostitutes.

I've often thought the same about such sites.

AffairAlert is similar, but they apparently have staff pretending to members to try and lure people into paying.

Jesus, the replies in this thread...you are ok with people being victims of identity theft just because they are in stale, boring relationships and want a bit of excitement in their lives?

Just how much information is deleted exactly when a member pays? I'd be willing to bet very little. They could charge to remove each individual part such as name, address, email, etc. They could make millions from this.

It's hard to adjust your moral compass towards a group of people who discard theirs.

I hope they also got STDs.

If you want to sleep with a ton of people you can stay single or be in an honest polyamorous relationship. It is completely fucked up to slowly gain someone's trust over years and then live a shady double life behind their back. Cheaters are sociopaths.

I care less about whether or not their identity is stolen and more about whether or not this leak will let their spouse know that their wife/husband might have STDs. If someone wants "a bit of excitement" in their life, they can jump off a cliff.

Huh, never seen anyone clown so hard on people they're defending.

ive browsed the site and would estimate 80% of the profiles in my area are fake. the site is basically set up to force you to pay to do anything and as far as I can tell uses fake ads/bots to try and trick you into signing up.

many people on there are single as well. the site uses cheating as a gimmick but its really no different than any other adult matching site.

Wait, you have to pay to delete an account there?

I just checked and you can choose to unlist your profile or fully delete it.
Most sites simply unlist your profile even though it says delete, even facebook.
