Assasins Creed Odyssey for Switch... Switch Streaming ?

So this was in the Japanese Direct.

This is the second "cloud" game for switch, with RE7 being the first from capcom. Most of the feedback wasn't positive, but it was from US players so with the servers halfway across the world I think you have to expect that.

Now of course Japan is a lot different than NA and EU. But Nintendo seems to be dipping its toes in game streaming. We know where Sony is with PSNOW, and its slowly adding PS4 support though game streaming is not a high priority. MS is rumored to be interested in game streaming but for now they have downloading with gamepass.

So is Nintendo actually getting with the times this time? What are the odds that next year we see even more streaming titles, and maybe a soft launch in US/EU?

And BTW this is going to be day and date as the PS4/PC/XBOX version.

Streaming games just feels so...unnatural. I understand why Nintendo has to do this since the console has NO power to run in comparison to even the VANILLA Xbox One but still who is the audience for this? For a system that is main selling point is portability you will also need to have internet everywhere to go to play these titles. So wtf Nintendo? But but Whataburger, internet is everywhere! Yeah no even when many places offer free internet you can't even access them without a browser confirming your connection something NINTENDO has blocked off from the Switch.

this might be the real reason for the switch online fee. they are bringing the streaming games to usa and gotta pay for lots of server.., pso 2, final fantasy online, dq 10 coming to usa?

yuck streaming games
Surprisingly I had a really good experience with Nvidia's service where I was playing Kingdom Come Deliverance/Dark Souls 3/Fortnite on a $100 netbook hooked up to a 4K monitor at 1440p/60 with no noticeable latency.
Certainly wouldn't trust a Nintendo service to do the existing technology justice.

Well for now this is only in Japan and I am sure its a lot different there with their internet and how compact the country is.

And these types of games are more meant to be played on a big screen TV, they are AAA console games.

But if you had fast enough internet to do this and the quality was good why not? Again I am not Japanese but from my understanding they have a lot better internet then in the North America.

We would have to get feedback from someone in Japan how the game plays.

that is not true.

Also what does it say about these devs in Japan? UBI and Capcom were thirsty to get these games on the switch that they tried to stream them.

PS4 is selling <20K a week in Japan while switch is between 45-50K a week. Maybe for 3rd parties even just streaming the game is enough to make some $$$ of their games in Japan.

For like 4 seconds while I was watching the Japanese presentation I thought that the game would be released for Switch, in a conventional way, and them I read the game title and got disappointed. If things keep like that FF XV will be the next one to be released via Streaming. I really don't like this.

How many people that would want to play these games have a Switch and not a PS4, PC or Xbox that can actually run the actual game?

with the way the PS4 is selling compared to the switch in JAPAN probably many. This is Japan only. and with Sony not hinting at a PS5 for holiday 2019 3rd parties in Japan have to think outside the box to sell their games.

Next year PS4 could be selling 10K a week and Switch 70K.

since nintendo already has a successful "tablet" on the market it's a no brainer getting their toes wet in this kind of thing. why pay another $300 for a sony device to stream PS5 games when you can already play Call of Duty on your Switch Ultra or whatever iteration it's in by then

Okay, so I'm gonna try to word vomit and just follow me here. It's a long shot and I doubt Nintendo will DO this, but it would be interesting if they did.

So you're Nintendo, you have this massively popular system. But the problem is because of it's form factor, it just can't play many of the AAA games. This is kind of a problem because being able to get AAA games would give your platform a huge boost in potential buyers. So you start a streaming service. It's not a perfect solution, but it gets the job done for now. So about three years from now, you're able to make a good revision of the Switch. It has extra RAM and a bit of extra power to push it. Now this version can play things like Assassin's Creed Oddesey natively. You convince Ubisoft to release a port of the game. Now here's the kicker. If someone with a Switch 1.0 buys the cartridge and puts it in the system, the system will detect that it can't play this game natively and load you on to the cloud version of the game. If it detects you're using the new hotness revision, it will install the game natively.

This is kind of my dream scenario and I doubt it would ever happen, but I feel like it would solve a lot of problems. But that's just me, though.

Makes sense for Ubisoft to try this out. Yves Guillemot was one of the guys saying that there's only one "classic" console generation left (the upcoming one) and after that, we'll have streaming boxes. (I like the guy but in this instance, I hope he's wrong).

Who the hell at Nintendo discovered PSNow and thought it would be good to implement such a service on a handheld platform?

I like how you went the extra mile with this gif to depict a different take on it, and so appropiate too.

yuck streaming games
Not a BEAST amirite.

Ontopic:
Its not a surprise that it is announced in Japan where Internet is omnious, so it makes sense there. However, completely relying on a stream is an instant consumer kill in my eyes. You simply buy a license for the stream and you technically dont own anything. You are dependent on Nintendo to keep your game afloat, if they decide not to support it anymore, then you are out of luck.

So things like these make sense for Japan, but this should not be a foreshadowing example of where the game industry should go regarding distribution of games.

You just described digital games. It's true, Sony, MS, Valve, Nintendo could shut down their service at any moment and give us all a big FU. Of those 4, I'd be more worried about Nintendo as they seem to be one of the most backwards companies. They do seem to be making some strides going forward though.

In general it also refers to Steam, but yes, that is digital games. Its why i take a specific stance against any digital-only initatives.

Oh no. It's resident evil 7 all over again...

I really don't like seeing this happen.

If your going to bring a game to the system do it properly or don't at all.

Limiting a game on a portable system to online streaming is stupid in my opinion.
