Assassin's Creed Syndicate Gameplay

Assassins Creed: I do not car(riag)e anymore.

Trailer did not sell me the game at all. Looks like the same old stuff. I'll skip this one.

Only positive thing I could find: They decreased the NPC count to improve performance.

What's so frustrating with Assassin's Creed is how little they care about evolving their own genre. Assassin's Creed 2 was released 6 years ago, and yet we still have the exact same game getting repeated year over year.

At least Call of Duty tries some different stuff, even if it's more gimmicky than anything, they're at least trying.

Here are some things to try out:
  • Have a genuine open world. Assassin's Creed games are pitched as "open world fun," but their open world nature has fallen way behind. Rarely do you stumble on something worth exploring or doing. Contrast this with something like GTA V or Skyrim, where the open worlds add depth by giving you new areas to explore, stunts to try, things to do, and side-quests to pitch in on.
  • Vary combat. It's weird to me that in previous AC games, your dagger functioned identical to a sword. It's weird that "bosses"/"targets" were taken down in the exact same way. Contrast this to Shadows of Mordor, which wasn't great, but at least had some modifiers that forced you to think through how to take down a target. Or Arkham games, which give you new tools you have to use as you progress.
  • Cohesive story. Way too often do Assassin's Creed narratives wander into just totally off-topic or boring. Black Flag was an amazing game, but that didn't stop the narrative from dragging on and becoming lazy.
Anyways, I'm not buying another Assassin's Creed until they have a 90+ metacritic again. It's just too long and too boring for me to care, and there are too many decent games out there for me to waste my time on shit I've seen before.

I really hope that voice work isn't final.

There can't be many players in the UK that would take the awful acting, dialogue and accents seriously.

Recalls Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

The grappling hook seems cool (as do the new vehicles likes trains and carriages). That being said, it's the same sh*t they've been doing outside of that. They basically showed a capture tower mission. We've had those since AC2: Brotherhood. Combat looks equally as clunky as before and the pop-in. My word that pop-in. We're talking about signs for buildings fading it when just a few feet from the main protagonist.

Super underwhelming reveal. I also feel like they don't have their best artists on this game. The character designs have been poor so far - at least Unity had great art and Arno looked cool even if the rest of the game was a shit-show.

This may be the first mainline AC game that I skip out on. Shame because I loved the idea of the setting.

the series isn't for me in general but this looks exceptionally bland doesn't it? I don't know why they don't do something a little more imaginative given the setup of their story

I used to love the AC series, 3 kinda put me off, but Black Flag pulled me back in. Unity though, man...It's the only AC game I haven't completed and don't plan on completing. I'm just over the series now.

That would requiere them to actually try to improve and evolve the formula.
Making a gimmick is so much easier!!!!.

Just make the same game as allways, put a london skin in there and advertise a grappling hook and carriages as this big new thing. BAM, new AAA sequel done

This bit made me laugh out loud for some reason.

Fuck i don't know how i should feel assasins creed unity wasn't very bad for me but at the end i didn't click with me even though i liked the world and the game (when it worked fine) but i seems that this character is more entertaining like edward in black flag. i know i'll buy it because i love assasins creed i just want this to be a good and fun assasins creed game.

Lastly, now that Victorian London is becoming the in-thing, I feel Americans' pain when non-Americans try and write characters of your nationality.
We do?

most gaffers maybe, but what do hardcore-passionnate gamers weigh against more casual that buy AC every year, or GTA/Watch Dogs/FIFA/COD (best selling games in 2014) ? They are the people who allow these sales and they will be hyped, even if they heard or saw the glitches and issues in AC:Unity.

In other words, gaf can complain, but lots of gafers don't play AC since several episodes (or just play once in a while), and gaf and gaf-like gamers are not the target of Ubisoft. Otherwise you wouldn't see the same business model anymore (look at Ubisoft profit this year)
Routine. Sad.

Well I mean, they aren't amazing but AC has become a decent $20 franchise.

Well. The big problem with AC is that at this point the franchise needed an evolution. Some big step forward to make it feel new and fresh again. Instead, Ubisoft is just sticking with the gimmick game mechanics. It doesn't feel like a franchise that grows, evolves and becomes better with every new game (or couple of games), Instead it feels like they are almost the same game with some "unique" gimmick to make it different. Unity had large crowds and crappy co-op missions, and now in this one it seems to be a grappling hook and carriages.
Instead of adding more and more, it's more like they're switching stuff around, like a roster.

Stuff like that might work when you have only made a few sequels. But at this point people want something more.
(by people I mean "gaming enthusiast" like the average Gaf user. AC still has a few more years left of just releasing bland sequels and selling millions anyway)

The best step forward was the whole pirate adventure thing in Black Flag. But they, understandably, don't want to turn AC into a Pirate (or ship) focused franchise so it was en evolution to the formula that couldn't stay. Which really makes me wish Black Flag had been a new IP instead
Which is funny because they're sure not trying to make this closer to a murder simulator.

This is the sign that the Ubisoft devs don't really know what they're doing.

It looks... surprisingly (unsurprisingly?) like every other Ubisoft sandbox game. Slum fight won! Light it up on the map. That's now your slum. Yay!

And graphically - based on this video - it appears to be inferior to Unity. Wonder why that is.

That's Ubisoft games in a nutshell.

I see Assassin's Creed is hoping to keep to its tradition of ruining awesome premises and fun writing with bad gameplay systems, boring mission design and what will inevitably be a horribly stupid main plot.

This samey, boring reveal makes sense given the "we failed because we took too many risks" rationale the devs empmoyed in the preceding vidoc.

Skyrim I agree.

However GTA V's world is just as shallow as any AC game.

I can only imaging How Ubisoft feel reading this forum after the reveal, They seem to have so much hope for this one. well they tried to convey it that way. But in the end this looks worse than AC:Unity in every way.

Main complain that i have is they didn't show us something that revolutionary and new. There is hook line or whatever but we didn't saw any cool things to do with it, we saw sister but no gameplay and how she is different , London looks nice but i don't feel atmosphere like i did with first ACU gameplay, they talked about vehicles but never showed us cool things we can do with them. They don't need to reveal many things but in my opinion they should focus on cool things and more things that make AC:S different.

Definitely gonna hold off of this one after the travesty that was Unity on consoles. What I saw looked pretty cool, but I don't trust them to deliver a stable framerate in any way.

I never understood the "pre-alpha" term regarding game marketing.

"Alpha" is when you have very few objects, basic AI, few locations and no way to actually play and complete that biuld as a game. When it's playable, it's "beta".

Then why the heck does that "pre-alpha" term is being used so many times in such a wrong meaning?

I guess pre-alpha footage is just bullshot footage?

This was a realistic reveal. There was so much pop-in during the gameplay. Janky animations. And man oh man you can use the environment part clearly needs work or you're not supposed to look at it.

The part of the gameplay I wasn't liking was the fist-sponge boss fight even with an ally unloading bullets into him. Grappling hook was fine I suppose. Carriages look like they can be some fun. Not writing it off but will wait to see more. The faces didn't quite look as good as Unity to me. That's disappointing.

I'm finding it so hard to care. I've only really played 2 and Black Flag but that was more than enough for me, the latter still felt stale even though it had been 4 years since I played 2.

The way Ubisoft pumps these out is damaging the quality of the games, the gameplay design has stagnated completely and now they focus on enslaving an army of global studios to build the backdrops rather than designing a fresh, fun game.

He's generic because he's a white male in his 20-30 years, he has the same body as the other AC protagonists (1m80, muscled) and probably the same personality (a bold-reckless guy that likes fighting). Seeing his sister being more cautious and liking stealth makes a mirror with the brother, and it's generic too.

I'm happy about this reveal. It seems like they want to keep the skeptics' expectations low, and throw a bone to the fanboys to satiate them until E3. I'm interested in it, but currently I would not pay $60 for this game. Hopefully the months leading up to the release will change that. I want a reason to get back into this series.

I would have liked to hear Crossing Eden's thoughts about this. Not a big AC player, but this looks good imo. Understandable that you might feel the gameplay premise gets stale if you've been playing AC games in quick succession.

This franchise was never supposed to be yearly. It could have been something special, but they fucked up

What does this even mean?

Things like that are 'game logic' in general. :) Not really exclusive to AC.

Well, it's Pre-Alpha footage. Perhaps they aim for stable 30 fps and 1080p and scaled down the number of details?
Coming from Ubisoft is really strange that they are not showing a bullshot video, maybe they are aiming 60 fps this time... Also that "Pre-Alpha" runs pretty solid, lol.

Yup, that's Assassin's Creed alright. Just skip a year or two and actually come up with something new Ubisoft, this is getting really tiring.

I find it so ridiculous they're putting out a new game when their previous one is still broken. That's unacceptable and this looks no better than Unity

After the janky mess that was Unity, no thanks. This series needs a bit of a refresh.

Yep. The thing is, it doesn't have to be a HUGE refresh. It just has to be a smart one. One that actually has an effect on gameplay. The boat in Black Flag for example was a perfect example of that. The core mechanics of the game were the same, but the setting allowed it to feel fresh.

Why did they get the guy who's native language is obviously not English to do the commentary? When you are trying to relay information in a certain language, you want to use an English speaker.

At this point the whole reason for their Main Character Designs is to make Cosplayers happy. All that fabric, all those belts... we're fast approaching FF levels of stupid here.

Game itself looks the same old. Can't say it's catching my interest.
