Assassin's Creed Syndicate Gameplay

I did chuckle at how you seemed right at home walking around with the top hat -- and then when it's time for action, you bust out a hood that looks completely out of place and start creeping around conspicuously.

I wish they'd do something bold and new. "Carriages!" isn't bold and new.

It seems to work for Ubisoft, though, they wouldn't be cranking these out every year if it didn't. Which begs the question -- If it's so profitable to pump these out every year, why doesn't Rockstar pump out GTA games every year? Surely they either have or could get the capacity to develop multiple games at once for yearly releases. Why is this a good idea for AC but not GTA?

I don't know about this one, don't like the way they're handling the setting... guess I expected a darker and more mysterious atmosphere. Everything looks sterile and lifeless, which is a huge shame since I'd love to see a properly done Victorian London game.

Can you beat the horses in the game? I want to be able to beat horses and then, when the beaten horse is dead, be able to beat the dead horse.

Seriously though, I am a bit of a history junkie, so I was looking forward to the setting and time period, but this looked unappealing to me. Is Ubisoft serious about 19th century "gangs" wearing the same color of clothes? It's like we're in Grove Street or something...
I forced my way through Unity, but a re-skinned game won't do if for me anymore.

I feel like the developers lost their love for this franchise because honestly that doesn't look good or fresh, it doesn't offer anything but a different setting in the same skin.

Agreed. Sterile and lifeless has been a recurring problem for this series (aside from Black Flag).

This just doesn't look very interesting, despite a cool setting. No remarkable new features really.

Seems like it's "going through the motions", which is largely what I picture the dev teams at Ubi doing when having to work on yet another yearly installment.

Going to echo everyone here. This looks bad.
I'm not saying it can't be turned into something really good but if they plan to release this fall/ winter, I have 0 faith that they will be able to get everything together enough to have a solid build for release. This really looks like it is going to be another Unity.I understand popin is going to happen but the way they have it appearing is jarring. The are methods that have it more gracefully fade in that would work so much better aesthetically.

The franchise 'storyline' has worn me down so much as soon as I hear the word 'Templars', I tune out.

Also, the rope launcher removes one of the staples of the series' gameplay mechanics?

Maybe Bloodborne's atmospheric streets have spoiled me but the environment looks so dull.

Lastly, now that Victorian London is becoming the in-thing, I feel Americans' pain when non-Americans try and write characters of your nationality.

Edit: Bloody Nora is the name of a character? Hahaha

Who are the others? "Good Lord", "What the piss?" and "Jurrassic Park!"
"Gordon Bennett" confirmed.

This series has become so boring that it's almost interesting.

Series pretty much died for me with the release of Black Flag. This doesn't look that bad, but it's just more of the same stale gameplay. I wish they'd mix it up a bit and add varying difficulty levels along with improved combat.

AC today, in one picture.

Maybe he doesn't like getting fucked up by Assassin Creed's Brock Lesnar.

It's amazing that even for gaf there is just no excitement at all this time around for AC.

There are just more exciting open world games to look forward to this year. Between Just Cause 3, XCX, MGSV, The Witcher 3 and Mad Max, I can't really think of a reason why I'd find this more exciting than those games.

I was really looking forward to this reveal, especially due to the setting. But it was incredibly underwhelming and just reminded me how stagnant the franchise is. Maybe after seeing more at E3 I'll change my mind, but yikes.

RE: Animations

It is pre-alpha footage guys. That could very well mean not all animations are finalized/animation smoothing hasn't been fully implemented.

Amusing apology video from Ubisoft about Unity. On one hand it's cool they fess up that the game was garbage, on the other - I'm still out $60.

The video left me with a huge questionmark over my had. It feels like Ubiosoft does not even understand what is going wrong with the AC games anymore.

Ubisoft from the video said:
What can we improve?

Ubisoft is very aware, that as we keep on pushing the games out we constantly need to innovate and bring something new.

Great core of thechnology, but how can we do even more with it?

...By reading the forums, the reviews... we always base our next steps on that...

Their innovations are:

-Better traversal in the city by adding carriages and hooks
-better cinematics
-a male/female lead combo.

Thats nice, but let me tell you one thing Ubisoft:

By now you need to rethink your open world formula and restart from scratch.

...."your're"?

If the Alpha footage is any indication, I think the game will finish with strong visuals.

Gameplay wise things have not changed enough to excite me. The grappling hook is great for quicker traversal but it looks like the overall physics and combat of the game are still underwhelming.

I can't help but echo everyone's sentiments. They need to re-tool the way this series feels and change-up the encounter/level design.

God damn the woman at 5:43 gets the crap beat out of her. Plenty of head punches, knees to the face, multiple stab wounds, a gunshot, a couple chest jabs, and a headbutt for good measure.

Mechanically, this looks like it's stuck in the Middle Ages. That "stealth mode" is laughable.

London looks... bad. Very flat buildings in the background, low draw distance, the unappealing kind of overcast lighting.

That's the entire problem: This is a series that should have never become annualized in the first place. Yes there's more money to be made but there really isn't much new being added. A big open world game that can last dozens of hours is not something that should have a new release each year. The disaster that was the Unity release should have been the perfect excuse to take the year off and essentially reboot the series. Then we could have seen a jump of the same caliber as AC2.

Hyperbole at its finest. What exactly do you want them to do? What would you change about the series?

Unity looks like a generation ahead of this and I'm not even comparing it to the final version of the game.

It really doesn't.

So much of this just seems poorly designed. So it's a game series renowned for it's parkour and the big new innovations are a grappling hook that instantly takes you elsewhere, and a fucking carriage?

Alright, now that I had a chance to see the video I will give my impressions.

First KUDOS to Ubisoft on this reveal. It looks 100% honest, 100% achievable and representative of the final product and in fact, I think it gives them room to IMPROVE the product rather than degrade it for launch. This is a step in the right direction and I hope this is the new trend in gaming.

knowing that, of course the impressions are going to be negative. Its not a simulated demo highlighting gameplay on rails for the sake of getting false positive impressions. I for one think its not for me, it looks very much like a unity mod and I was bored watching it because of that. I don't think they nailed the atmopshere they were trying to achieve at all and I can honestly say there was not one aspect that drew me in or has me looking forward to the game.

But again, Thanks UBI for learning from your mistakes and honestly showcasing what will be delivered. I like the changed mindset were they are aiming to impress the true fans of the series and not try to impress everyone who sees the video.

I did like that the whole footage wasn't ultra polished and actually revealed a lot of kinks. I prefer seeing the game in the actual state it's in compared to a unrealistic scripted demo that they'll never reach.

...They should ask From Software on how to do a Victorian England theme because god damn does this AC look dull.

It's like stale biscuits and cold tea.

Can't say this impressed me much. I think Ubisoft should pour their money and talent into something else.

To be fair, it wasn't raining and it wasn't night. That's imo when "victorian england" becomes really "victorian england".

... if that makes sense.

Yeah, it doesn't add up for me either. Both of those seem like ways to avoid the series staple parkour.

After all the events of the past years (plural) this will be the first AC game I won't just buy blind. I'm a fan of the series but now I am at the point of being a bit more hesitant towards immediately buying it. This game does not look to interesting to me, just like an add on to Unity tbh. Paris, London, this looks pretty much identical. Again, another AC game that seems to not have an identity. Still, I want it to be good, but we'll have to wait and see.

Also, just in advance: No Ubisoft, no pre-order bonus or app bullshit will make me pre-order the game, thanks.

I'm surprised they did not include a pre-order initiative at the end. Seems like they are scared of people criticizing the game early so they try to please us and act nicer than usual. What a bunch of shifty people. I only hope they won't do their usual trailer-overload this years. I can't stand it and stop watching stuff after the 3rd video anyway. Nobody needs 30 trailers Ubi. (Oh well, we're already getting there anyway...)

Black Flag was amazing. Unity was a struggle for me to finish, and killed off any interest I had in this series. For the first time in years I don't even care about the next game in the series; put this thing to rest.

Hyperbole at its finest. What exactly do you want them to do? What would you change about the series?
I'm not the one being addressed here, but I'll use the chance to say the most positive change for me at this point would be to make the series more focused, instead of inflating the length with repetitive busywork, have less content but make it all original and interesting. Ubisoft open world games have roughly 15 hours of original ideas, but through repetition they can get easily stretched to 40+ hours, which feels mind numbing.

So much of this just seems poorly designed. So it's a game series renowned for it's parkour and the big new innovations are a grappling hook that instantly takes you elsewhere, and a fucking carriage?

Yeah, they have 0 idea what's needed at this point. Parkour in Unity was fast enough for me personally but just needed a little polish and easier way to enter windows on demand. It's the open world systems/missions and combat that need a complete overhaul. The combat they showed today will not cut it, at all. The whole thing reminded me of the early hobo Sam Splinter Cell footage before it became Conviction. Just a showcase of mediocrity and lack of a strong vision. Probably the creative director's fault. Delay this shit and give it an identity.

I agree that the grappling hook is sth they stole from the Batman games (where it makes sense) but the carriages could be neat. The ships were pretty good in Black flag and III.
But even as a big AC fan, I'll only get this once it's discounted.
