Assassin's Creed Syndicate Gameplay

Nope. Not getting me on this one. Unity was one of the few games to give me buyer's remorse and I didn't even buy it. It came free with a hardware purchase.
AC 3 didn't give buyer's remorse?

Feel like AC fans are like Sonic fans. They'll play each one no matter what, contribute to the many millions, and will be disappointed most of the time. There might be a few that they love (Sonic Generations, AC Black Flag) and they come back every time.

Same shit, different place.

Let me guess the area is going to be a clusterfuck of annoying collectables and painfully padded side quests to artificially extend game play.

I know this game for sure isn't gonna be game of the year.

Ah yes, the "marketing pre-alpha" aka "please be nice because we know it looks shit".

What a bad choice to show something so mundane as a premiere reveal. It should have been a set piece mission, like the ones they showed off for Unity or AC3.

Excitement levels for AC on GAF are not indicative of the excitement levels of the AC player base. There is an exceptional amount of hate for the series here.

Is not only here, even in the ubisoft forums plenty of people is not happy about this reveal. You don't need to be a hater to see this reveal was underwhelming.

Umm, yes and no. I didn't beat it, but I mostly enjoyed my time with it. It was also a freebie. The only games in the series that I bought were AC2 and Brotherhood, and I enjoyed them both immensely.

"Alright, time to shit out another one of these things. What's the single new gameplay mechanic this time? Spin that wheel!"

"The Wheel of Guillemot says... 'horse and carriage driving'."

"Great! But, wait, aren't London's street's infamously narrow and crowded?"

"Just make them six lanes wide, nobody will notice"

"Awesome! But, wait, now nobody can get anywhere on rooftops any more."

"...Um. What do the Batman games do about that?"

"Oh, they have that Line Launcher thing!"

"Sweet, let's steal that! And give him Batman's grapple gun, too!"

Guess what streets were wide in 1868.

One of the first things I thought when I saw that there would be gang fighting and territory takeovers.... Man, the Nemesis System would be awesome for this sort of thing. lol

I have a feeling most streets weren't like that. I'll have to do some research.
Actually you'd be surprised. I'm not too familiar with London, so this image threw me off too. One of my biggest complaints with the reveal was that the streets looked far too wide for a 19th century European city. Boy was I wrong. Do a google image search of 1800's London and there are countless photos and drawings of streets that wide. The London that they showed off today was pretty damn spot on from what I have seen in photos so far.

I liked AC3. It has it's issues and the dozens of different gameplay systems were clearly designed by separate teams with barely any overlap (the economy was exploitable because of this) but the setting was great and it introduced ship battles, my new favourite element of the series.

Yes, the stealth was HOT GARBAGE but I didn't find it as slow to get going as others suggested.

Maybe it was because I skipped out on Revelations? I dunno, playing it on PC several months after it first came out, I enjoyed it.

Then again, AC Unity was atrocious. And this looks just as bad. Shame, because they're wasting some amazing time periods.

If I can say anything nice about this -- and believe me, it's hard -- it's that the gameplay/trailer/screens appear to not be plastered in bullshit promises. It's standard assassins creed, which is bad, and they didn't butter it up to make it look like fun when it's distinctly not.

So, that's good, I guess.

I can't believe they sell so many of this crap every year. It's same shit in different skin. They can produce an ass creed every 6 months with one hand tied behind their back.

For what it's worth, I've loved as many as I've disliked/hated.

Loved: AC2, Brotherhood, Black Flag, AC1 at release

Somewhere in between: AC1 nowadays, Rogue

Hated: ACR, AC3, Unity

They have struck gold enough times for me that I'll keep coming back unless there's too many bad ones in a row. After AC3 I thought I was done, and Black Flag saved the franchise for me, and I expect others.

But man, they definitely took a step back in graphics. Understandable to make it run smoother, but it is super noticeable. Even for Alpha.

This looks incredibly safe and incredibly boring.

I thought Victorian London had massive potential as a setting and with another studio leading this I had the hope that this would be at least a little bit more different. I will keep an open mind, but from what they shown so far it just looks extremely uninspired.

I can understand why they went the unfinished Alpha roue after all the flack Ubi has been getting for performance and downgrades. If anything this is probably just a more accurate look at a game at this stage of development than we normally get. It looks like they just captured footage strait from their current build rather than try and polish up a vertical slice. I'm sure at this point they would rather have people disappointed with prerelease footage than be disappointed with the final product again. Hopefully this becomes a trend for them.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I have to believe Ubi saving their "Holy shit" demo for E3. Whatever the big hook is for Syndicate, we probably haven't seen it yet (it may end up being the whole "two playable characters" thing). There's no way in hell this gameplay demo they just released is the highlight of the AC: Syndicate experience. It felt like some of the more generel, mundane tasks you'll be asked to do.

The demos they've done in the past for Sony's conference were usually way more exciting than what we got here.

AC3 2012 Sony Conference Demo
AC4 2013 Sony Conference Demo
AC: Unity 2014 Microsoft Conference Demo (they weren't at Sony last year from what I can recall)

Too bad that MS demo was a lie. Mission isn't in the game, scripted AI moments not in game, and crowd mechanics not in the game.

Bold faced lies. If this E3 demo is exciting it probably isn't real.

They really need to ditch the hood/cowl costume. It looks out of place as fuck and just helps you stand out more.

Agree. Right when I first saw the gameplay, it looked silly and takes away from the immersion. A hooded protagonist looking out of place among civilians and a regular city.

So I see that this game is available on Steam. Looks like Unity not being available on Steam didn't work like they thought it would.

Does this mean we could see Unity on Steam in the future?

Would love to bench Unity, but don't want to buy it on anything other than Steam.

After Unity I am just bored of this series.

Black Flag was a nice change of pace and it just seems like they ignored how many people loved that game and gave it high marks for providing something new and fresh (The naval aspect), then it seems they just decided to go back to the same old formula from the previous AC games.

The horse carriages/traffic looks neat but I don't know if that'd be enough to not feel like it's just another ac game.

I have a feeling most streets weren't like that. I'll have to do some research.
You have no idea what the rest of the streets in Syndicate look like. There could easily be a variety of street widths, as Ubisoft tends to aim for at least some historical faithfulness to the cities.

Selfish thing to request, but I hope Ubisoft stop making these AC/open world games someday and make more Child of Light and Valiant Hearts. Pipe dream I know.

I'll give it a chance this year. I really don't like the AC series or Ubi open-world design but the setting is just too good. At the very least, exploring London will be nice.

After being such a huge fan of the series due to my love of history and the settings, I think I'm finally to the point where I don't care anymore. I was already getting tired of the formula but the settings kept me interested (got Unity for free though), but this is just pushing it. I'm glad they didn't fake the reveal, but their idea of innovation is either nonsensical, basic gameplay tropes you find in most games, or slight variations of previous games' features made out to be differentiators now.

Why can't they actually do something different and keep the series going instead of running it to the ground by releasing a new game each year that plays exactly the same. The side-quests are bad, the story in this one seems uninteresting, the bugs and performance limit my enjoyment of the game for a few months, etc.

I was actually looking forward to this one originally just due to the setting. I never planned on buying it at launch because I'm not crazy, but now I just don't care unless they unveil something really unique at E3.

Ubisoft is taking a series that had the most potential out of any new IP from the 360/PS3 era and is making sure it will end only when they milked the series dry after the majority of people finally get tired of the same gameplay that plagues every Ubi open world game instead of taking their time and constantly evolving a series that has such a unique premise that it has UNLIMITED options for sequels. If they kept evolving instead of just inflating each game with more pointless bullshit, I'd be as excited to play each one as I was to play AC2.

At least I'll have fond memories of AC2 and how it eclipsed AC1 in every single way and gave us one of the most unique settings in gaming.

They're relying solely on the settings now which is not only bad for the gameplay, but I think it means they'll be afraid to do too unique of settings out of fear of losing sales since that's all they have to sell people on. No taking risks and giving us settings some casual people might not have any interest in and more relying on focus groups for sequels. Time to evolve or watch your series decline.

Interesting. As much as Ubisoft deservedly gets flak for showing unrealistically good graphics pre-release, something more impressive for Syndicate would've had me a lot more hyped. I think Unity is jaw dropping...incredible graphics. This looks worse. I know it's pre-alpha, but it's still the first impression we get.

More important than the graphics, it all just looked dull. A bit of a thud for the big reveal. London actually seems a lot less interesting and charming than Paris in this footage. Big, wide streets with very few people. And the buildings just didn't look as nice to me. Chariot gameplay looked boring too. And the mission seemed typical AC. I did like the grappling hook mechanic. That looks cool! Should make traversal quicker and more interesting. And I thought the hand to hand combat looked nice. Fast and visceral!

Did somebody make a gif of the environmental kill with the barrels? I think that part encapsulates my feelings toward the Assassin's creed series at this point.

At this point almost all of the gameplay elements that forms the basis of the franchise feels like a chore. I keep hoping for Ubisoft to at least deliver a compelling narrative a la AC2 but so far no bueno (the brief Kenway prologue excluded).

This doesn't look to exciting. After Unity I will wait for impressions and (performance-) reviews before picking this up.
the logic of "pre-alpha footage" is hilarious. somebody on the first page already explained what pre-alpha means (i.e. not this build with near finalized graphics and gameplay) the game is releasing in 5 months. why wouldn't they want to show of the latest build of the game?
this is most likely the near final build, minus a few touch-ups (more civilians probably, maybe more details).

Because they want you to think that the game is going to improve in a way more meaningful way then possible.

I'm sure Unity has been on steam for months lol.

So far the only good thing about this reveal was the revelation that Crossing Eden was banned, would someone mind telling me what it was that finally got him banned?

Seems like they are taking the same approach with the modern day story according to Game Informer:

Are you taking a similar approach to Unity regarding the modern-day storyline?
Yes, we are following in the footsteps of Unity, and we’ll be talking more throughout the summer about exactly what we are doing with the present-day storyline.

Why did they have to butcher the modern day aspect so hard. It was a total farce in ACU.

The Desmond stuff was great for creating a context for the future.

But I guess I'm in the minority since most don't give a shit about it.
