Couldn't get over how annoying the main group of kids was. All the slang sounds so forced and I couldn't really stand how there was never any reason to really sympathize with these scummy kids. Disliked the cast from the beginning, disliked em maybe a tad less in the end, but I disliked em nonetheless.

The comedy was too sparse/bad to lift any of it up. Would've been funny if the kids started to drop their facade and talk more like normal kids as the tension was rising, or at least have them shut up so I wouldn't have to have my ears raped.
 
Saw this on monday at a film screening over here in Germany. I didn't know anything about the movie, but I got this Misfits/Skins vibe and immediately fell in love with it. The soundtrack is fucking awesome as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlDy2HpFaq0

Too bad the rest of the audience didn't seem to enjoy it as much as I did. The German translation felt kind of forced, therefore I heard some people call the movie too immature albeit the violence.
 
Watched it, was damn awesome. Watched it with some friends and none of them understood the slang. The stuff they were saying in ATB I hear all the time in Cali fam, trust, believe. Nothin new.

Anyways, the movie was damn awesome I thought the pacing was great and just enough comedy to keep it together.
 
Nice to see this bumped.

Fun movie.

I liked it a lot. Kind of like The Wire meets Shaun of the Dead a little bit.
I agree that the kids were unlikable at the beginning but they really grew on me.
 
I loved the alien design. Really fucking clever, like something out of a The Real Ghostbusters episode.

Really loved the movie.

The alien design choices, particularly the pitch black hue, lent itself quite well to the modest budget too.
 
Yeah I thought this was fantastic. The monsters looked great, humor was good, action was exciting and I really grew to like the characters by the end. I'm completely surprised at how much I liked this movie.
 
Caught this at a 8PM showing at a theater outside of New Orleans last night.

The girlfriend and I wanted to do a movie night but the selection was rather dismal, and we decided on this on a whim with absolutely no prior knowledge of the film.

Amazing, though we laughed at it a bit more than we should have. One of the best films of the summer and is this year's analogue to Scott Pilgrim, for obvious reasons.

A shame I didn't notice it sooner, as I would have recommended it to friends and family, but I'm sure today's the last day it'll be playing here, considering its only got two showings.
 
Probably one of the worst movies I've seen all year. I haven't watched Transformers 3 yet so you never know.

The only way it could've paid off is if all the characters died in a horrible fashion. The 'comedy' is so fucking ham-fisted and bluntly observed as to be embarrassing to anyone who is actually English.

Funny thing is that I had very low expectations going in.
 
This movie was terrible enough that I have a lowered opinion of all the film journalists and bloggers who recommended it. And that takes a lot.
 
Such a good, fun movie. Great acting for what was basically just a bunch of no-name kid actors.

Only sore point was the creature design; it kinda screamed "budget".

Highly recommended!

edit: Also it's nice to see a FUN movie about low-income kids for once.
 
Loved this movie so much. Fun soundtrack, fun characters (start off as assholes but I really took a liking to them later on) and the creatures look really cool, remind me of that Another World game.

The dude who plays Moses is gonna be the future. He got that Denzel look and I'm sure he'll be a good actor provided he chooses good roles.

He's already the lead as a young Mike Tyson-ish analogue in a new HBO series.
 
Heard about that one, I hope the show's decent. I like Spike Lee but the dude behind Entourage doesn't really inspire faith from me.

Should be interesting to see, in some shots he looks like Tyson too.
 
I liked it a lot.
Proof that you don't need a big budget to make a good film. The aliens looked better than most CGI stuff you usually get. Music was great, script was lean and acting was solid. I was kind of dissapointed in Nick Frost - thought his lines could have been better.

But yeah I have a ton of faith in Tintin now. What with Cornish (this), Moffat (BBC Sherlock) and Edgar Wright writing it.
 
I watched it last week, I didn't know there was a thread about it though. I liked it alot more than other bigger budget movies this year. There wasn't a dull moment.
 
Wasn't expecting this to be so much fun!

Just to point something that wasn't already, the soundtrack is really good.

Saw this movie with my girlfriend last night, really loved it. Whoever said it was an R-Rated Goonies hit the nail on the head. The movie has such a tremendous pace to it...

Some of the shots in the film (
the Drug Dealer in the elevator, when the one kid rides his bike into the smoke to rescue Moses, the reveal that the Monster's' "eyes" are actually teeth
} will stick with me for a while.
 
Fuck, that looks so good!

Movie is out on DVD and Blu-Ray now, get at it people. My favorite movie of the year by far.
 
This movie rocked. I was blown away. I just wished it was longer, it was over way too quickly.

That actor who played Moses was badass. He's got quite a future ahead of him.
 
This movie was awesome. The action and comedy were perfect.

I didn't like some of the more corny-ish elements though. They tried to make the the main guys sympathetic, when they shouldn't be making any apologies. I really love the "violence comes back to bite you" theme, but the "If we knew you were from the block we wouldn't rob you, because we love the block, and the block is awesome" theme, not so much.

BTW, lol at the "characters were unlikable" criticism. The way you see the kids reflect what you think, rather than what was shown.

scene I watched the kids go into that shed to fight the alien and fully expected to see the alien win but when they all came out (and I realized that they were the main characters)
and I instantly had a huge smile on my face.

It was a very energetic film and I liked that...though to be honest I felt that the weakest member of the cast was Nick Frost.

I'm probably alone in thinking that.

Nick frost was background/supporting cast, this was all about the gang, the girl(s) and Brewis.

See, I've always found this to be a bad reason to dislike a film.
Now, I found the entire cast endearing. But even if you don't (which is weird because come on
Moses is a kid forced into petty crime due to absent guardians and just generally being dealt a shitty hand and he risks his life to practically save the planet but whatever
) I can't understand how you can entirely ignore the development of characters and the message behind that development.
Even when the person that a character starts out as and the person they end up being are both people you would dislike in real life, the change and what the writers is trying to say by illustrating that change should be what matters.
 
Popcorn film that will go down well with most audiences looking to be entertained for 88 minutes. Great mix of action and humor.

I am a great fan of British cinema (and tv-shows), but this garbage very nearly destroyed all the goodwill I had built up over the years.

Tonight I shall watch the Robert Carlyle episode of Cracker to rid me of all the resentment I now feel.

To hear talk of a potential sequel makes it even worse.

Was very dissapointed. Disliked most of the cast, didn't find it really any funny, fun.... or anything it just was so meh. Seriously overhyped

I'm sure the UK will muster up all of it's country's resources with the single goal of getting back in to your good graces.

Can't you just dislike a film? Why make more of it than there is? How does a sequel harm you if there are fans who would pay to see it?
 
Wow. What a terrible film.

Dislikable characters whose "arc" has you wishing they would all get killed or imprisoned and the most laughable attempts to make them sympathetic. That flaw, which colors the entire film, ruins whatever charm and fun there is in there. It also ends abruptly with little to no expository information having emerged.

The attempts to be "badass" were cringingly bad. Like a 14 year old screenwriter was tearing up with his own douche-chills as he committed these lines to vellum.

Thank you. I appreciate the UK's effort. To be fair, the next Sherlock show will be more than sufficient.

Of course a sequel doesn't harm me ( thought it might indirectly: what other sequel could have been produced with the money?).

Obviously I was being melodramatic because I disliked the film a great deal.

Has that never happened to you before? If so, then it's a shame! Disliking something with a passion is a great deal of fun.
