It obviously seems wrong in the US, but that's because we have something to be ashamed about in our history. I'm not sure the same is true for every country, feels almost like US cultural imperialism to force the standards of costume on countries with little to no history of racism. Thay being said, I don't know Australias history, so it could be equally disturbing there to don blackface as in the US.

While black face wasn't really an Australian thing(apart from those horrible dolls), we absolutely have a terrible history of racism against indigenous Australians. And it is most definitely not easy to draw the line of whats racist between different countries. I'm sure we have a lot of horrible stereotypes that don't really apply to the US and they have some that don't apply here. However you have to remember that Australia is a very multicultural country and in doing these things you are likely to find people that will be offended. So just don't do it.
