i know a girl who went to a halloween party dressed as drake in hotline bling music video. she just did the eyebrows, beard and hairline.

people didn't really have to ask what she was dressed as. don't use that garbage excuse for blackface.

It's an especially bad excuse in this scenario because the woman is in blackface and still looks nothing like Kanye.

You know that. I know that. But mofos acting like ignorant racist shit needs to take place in America for it to be "racism".

But you are of course correct.

Indeed. I would have made the same mistake a few years ago in terms of defending it, but I'll happily admit I was wrong there. People stubbornly asserting there is no problem does a lot of damage though. People should just show some respect. They might not mean to upset others, but if they do, try and empathise instead of doubling down.

She looks like Eminem who had a mishap with marker. You can dress up as a person or character from another race without painting your skin. Putting the racial history of it aside, painting your skin will always look bad regardless of intent. If the strength of your costume is based on matching another human skin tone then its a bad costume in the first place. To prove my point

All of these characters are recognizable without the people portraying them painting themselves.

That King Joffe Joffar will never not make me smile

This is all Harry Connick Jnr's fault. He got up on aussie TV and explained how racist blackface is and now Australians seem to think it's cool.

THE SAME ACT THAT WAS DONE 20 YEARS AGO HAS SUDDENLY BECOME OFFENSIVE BECAUSE AN AMERICAN CELEBRITY WAS JUDGING THE ACT.IT WAS JUST HARMLESS FUN BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION........GET OVER IT !!.

Did Australia have black slaves or otherwise create a system of structural racism? If not, I don't see how skin color is a different component of a costume than hair color. It obviously seems wrong in the US, but that's because we have something to be ashamed about in our history. I'm not sure the same is true for every country, feels almost like US cultural imperialism to force the standards of costume on countries with little to no history of racism. Thay being said, I don't know Australias history, so it could be equally disturbing there to don blackface as in the US.

One of the most thorough genocides in history.

Man I could've sworn that we were starting to get over this shit after we embarrassed ourselves in-front of Harry Connick Jr back in '09

This second person almost gets it at the end... almost...

"How can one play a character that is a different colour of them without using "blackface""

"a persons skin colour doesn't define who they are.."

The same person said both things in the same post, what the fuck.

While black face wasn't really an Australian thing(apart from those horrible dolls), we absolutely have a terrible history of racism against indigenous Australians. And it is most definitely not easy to draw the line of whats racist between different countries. I'm sure we have a lot of horrible stereotypes that don't really apply to the US and they have some that don't apply here. However you have to remember that Australia is a very multicultural country and in doing these things you are likely to find people that will be offended. So just don't do it.

How is dressing as someone that generally dresses in normal clothes a costume? It's not like Michael Jackson where there's any number of iconic costumes you could wear and say "nice mj costume." Chick is just all around stupid.
