It's been a loooong time since Fox has done a blockbuster right, that was the most confusing thing Cameron did. By going to them. Fox is a complete mess when it comes to blockbusters the past 5+ years or so.gdt5016 said:It's hard to believe ANYONE could have fucked this up this much. They'll pretty much have to go on a mega-ier marketing blitz to make up for it.
Cheebs said:Is it Cameron? Fox is terrible at marketing movies it could be their fault.

Then Cameron is off in this too. He can't sell a movie to the masses based on his name, they don't know who he is. Titanic itself sold it as well as the actors. Not Cameron's name. Plus it's sci-fi. Sci-Fi isn't something the masses will run too. Unless it is from a franchise they already are familiar with. Plus no big name stars. It really needs massive marketing to sell it.duckroll said:Well, Fox sucks donkey nads, but I would imagine Cameron has quite a bit of say in terms of how they market the movie and what they're allowed to show, where and when.
I'd say he probably has more say than Fox does.duckroll said:Well, Fox sucks donkey nads, but I would imagine Cameron has quite a bit of say in terms of how they market the movie and what they're allowed to show, where and when.

Even if we magically get a trailer this week it doesn't excuse the fact we should have gotten one MONTHS ago. Attached to one of the big May blockbusters. We've got trailers for 2010 movies already!

duckroll said:So why's there no trailer? What's Cameron's problem? There are trailers for movies coming out NEXT YEAR, and Avatar is due in December. Does he really feel that the best way to hype his movie up is to step into an Ubisoft conference and rant about his movie for 15 mins, instead of showing anything?
No, building anticipation by "mystery" would involve some actual marketing (a teaser without actual footage, a logo poster) that, even if it didn't say anything, would at least make the general public aware of the film's existence.Zeliard said:I think they're trying to be "mysterious" about it to build anticipation.

The FUCKING GAME TO A JAMES CAMERON MOVIE.

"People" are definitely not the general public.Zeliard said:I think people are aware of the film's existence,

Zeliard said:I really don't think it's as a big a deal as you and others are making it seem. We all desperately want to see a trailer, but the "general public" will go see if based solely on it being a rare James Cameron film, and the pretty 3D visuals. They aren't that hard to appease. It probably would not have hurt if they had started marketing it earlier, but I don't think it's necessary other than to appease people like us.
Again, I'm having a very difficult time seeing this movie struggling at the box office. It's going to be gigantic. Is it going to be good? That's what remains to be seen, and that's the big question mark at this point.
No, I'm not arguing that it'll bomb because of the lack of marketing this far; I just don't think it makes sense to attribute it to any bona fide strategy. But I think that for a film that isn't a big-name property, with known stars, it would have been smarter to set up the anticipation much further in advance.Zeliard said:I really don't think it's as a big a deal as you and others are making it seem. He's been on a 10 year hiatus. When people mention titanic you think of the actors and music. When people mention Terminator, you think about Arnold.Zeliard said:When's the last time a James Cameron feature film didn't do very well at the box office? His movies almost always make buckets, and the more money is poured into them, the more money they end up making back. I see no reason for that to stop, particularly with a tech-laden movie like this.
Cameron's name is huge with the general public. Aliens? Terminator 2? Titanic? All are heavily entwined with popular culture.
Well, I was using the word "strategy" loosely. Remains to be seen exactly what they're doing. I was just guessing as to what their plan was and why they haven't put the movie out there like we all expected them to.
Honestly, I never heard his named mentioned my entire life until talks about this movie came in the past few years.jett said:I think people still know who James Cameorn is. Ask around and see for yourself.![]()

Movie nub.Jibril said:Same with me.
"James Cameron is making AVATAR"
me:Who's James Cameron?
"The guy that did Titanic"
Me: "What, who is that, and how's that guarantee him to do a good sci-fi movie?"
"He also made Terminator..."
Me: "WHAT? No frakking way!"
" Yep..."
Me:"wow"
"he also did Aliens"
Me: "WTF,how come I didn't know this?!"
The fact he seems to imply he says "frakk" in real life is far more depressing.Dax01 said:Movie nub.

I hope your right but without seeing it I find it hard to be excited as Sculli.Zeliard said:Buncha pessimists.![]()
If the movie does live up to the hype and sets a new standard for film-making tech, people will go see it in droves even if they have no idea what it is right now. These sorts of huge tech undertakings are often seen as a big can't-miss event, ala Jurassic Park.
If it's your typical 3D movie, then I'd agree that it may not do that well. If it's something more, it will be huge. It isn't just Cameron's name that will do it, but even moreso the type of movie it potentially is.
I'll eat some crow if it bombs at the box office. I just really don't see that happening.
The longer you do it, the more people will know about it. Even if the studio goes balls out, three weeks is most certainly not enough. You can cover the world in ads, but there won't be enough time.Razorback PT said:Why is everyone in a hurry to get the marketing train going? What, 5\4 months aren't enough to completely saturate the whole planet in advertising? They probably only need three weeks to do it. Just get the news stations talking about the return of the Titanic director, and that he just made de most expensive and technically complicated movie of all time.
People will see it.
TrAcEr_x90 said:I am hoping for some shitty camera phone video of the footage. Low expectations for if they actually release a trailer within the next week.
critch said:The complete lack of trailers and studio hype usually means there is something to hide. I wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed to May, or these effects aren't what they're cracked up to be. I can't think of any huge movie that didn't have a trailer less than 5 months out.
