I'd much rather pay. Imax's are going to be flooded now. And though it's extremely cool to show the movie the way it should be shown.. if they don't release an actual trailer, nobody in the mainstream is going to know about this movie.
Seeing as I'm in Los Angeles, not a chance in fucking hell I'll get to see it. It'll be packed beyond belief.

Cue the TDK haters in 3..2..1

Good chance footage will leak, it'll be REAL tough not to watch and wait another month. We should have poll! :D

What? TDK has had zero impact on how films are made. It was a great movie but the "masses" probably don't even have it in their top ten.

Hey Camewrong, give me the trailer nao, I don't give a fuck about the amount of moneyhats you threw in IMAX's direction.

there are no IMAX theaters where I live :(

Reading now so I'm not sure how detailed or well written of a impression it is..

All the Pandora stuff that was shown was incredibly detailed, layer upon layer of movement, life, detail. But it seemed to be completely mo-cap and computer animated. While I thought it looked fantastic I think people need to reel in their expectation a bit.

What I saw were glimpses at a fantastic bit of storytelling, a rich fantasy tale, by a master of the artform, but the CGI creatures and characters are just that. They’re amazingly executed, no doubt, but it’s not like when you saw your first CG dinosaur and you said, “This is a game changer” to yourself.

He doesn't understand. THIS IS EVOLUTIONARY, NOT REVOLUTIONARY!

HD footage should be up the same day, though.

Be nice to have it now, of course. :)

Maybe I was too young, but when I first saw Jurassic Park, I did think it was a game changer. It was an incredible experience for me.

Trailer August 21st? Cameron is seriously just fucking with us.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Just release the damn footage now.

yup thats why I keep calling this movie Phantom Menace:Part 2

All I've read from you (and several others) are snarky posts declaring how awful this is going to be, without you having seen frame 1 of footage. I would think that, especially amongst the nerdily-inclined, James Cameron has more than earned the benefit of the doubt based on his oeuvre. And if you're at all a fan of big, serious sci-fi, and the tech of sfx, and monsters and aliens et cetera, then why wouldn't you want this to succeed?

I'll wait to see for myself, but I'll err on the side of Cameron delivering a unique and visceral experience over some do-nothing neckbeard entertaining himself by shitting up a message board.

Jurassic Park was one of the first movies that really used CGI convincingly and pretty much opened the technology up to widespread use. Unfortunately, that hasn't always been a good thing. JP used a lot of animatronics as well and I think some tv/movies use CGI where puppets/animatronics would look better. It's caused a lot of 90s movies not to age well at all.

Jurassic Park was a pretty unique movie. It's going to hold up on a visual level far more than nearly every modern (mostly CGI-laden) movie due to the sterling use of animatronics.

Same here, but I watched JP the other day, and I couldn't believe how awful the first CGI dinosaur in that movie looks. Just awful.

Why don't they just give us the trailer now, which would get us hyped up for IMAX apocalypse on August 21st? Better yet, why don't they just have AVATAR in all 3-D theaters on August 21st, since IMAX really isn't that widespread, and the vast majority of people seeing AVATAR won't see it in IMAX...

At least we know it's actually coming out this year.

Really? I think they look just as impressive as anything today.

At that time there was also nothing to really compare it with, fairly. They were the most realistic looking dinos evar, by a looooong stretch.
I fully expect Avatar to look amazing, but I can understand those calling it "evolutionary".

The T-Rex looks good, but if you watch the first dinosaur encounter in HD, it looks anything but impressive.

Jesus christ, the description on AICN of
how the world reacts to the na'vi and the moss lights up underneath his food sounds so fucking awesome.
This movie is just going to be so cool.

Yeah, that part was astonishing. I just wish they launched an Apple trailer already.

Let's all be glad you didn't play a part in the transfer from black-and-white to color television.

I would think that, especially amongst the nerdily-inclined, NO DIRECTOR has earned the benefit of the doubt based on how many times movies just like this have been hyped and been complete wastes of time.

We've never said how awful it will be, we're just waiting on some sort of evidence before we get all crazed, and would appreciate some reason to be hyped. Once again, Fox and Cameron have missed an opportunity to show the people that will actually see his movie that it actually exists.

Only on the internet would moving cautiously get you bitched at.

Considering that Cameron's apparently said no to every trailer put together so far, I'd say it's safe to blame him.
Oh great so we don't get to see a 2D trailer that we want because Cameron's too close to the damn movie and he doesn't think that any trailer can DO JUSTICE to his movie and he wants us to see a chunk of the movie in 3D instead? Goddam I just want to see how convincing the CG faces and the flora shots are, and I can get that from watching it in 2D 1080p on apple trailers.

Refering to the trailer. Not the entire film. Commercials and TVspots for this movie will all be in 2D. I see no reason why the 2D trailer[ not the footage meant for IMAX] should be held back.

Do anyone have further info on the August 21st happening?

G4 mentions the 15min free showing @ IMAX cinemas but 'trailer in all formats' talk was only in tweet form as far as I know.

They want to torture us. Isn't it obvious? ;)

Seriously, this movie will be huge at the box office. The 25-minute Comic Con footage and the reactions to it are now going to precipitate the positive word-of-mouth and get Avatar into the public consciousness.

By the time August 21st roles around, there are gonna be some packed IMAX theaters wanting to look at that footage. They're obviously going a different direction with the marketing of this movie, and it annoys some of us because we're the ones who want to see the footage so badly, but they're clearly confident that the movie will sell itself fairly easily once it is shown.

The trailer is coming out December 19.

Agreed. I actually refrained from ever watching movies in 3D until Avatar is released. It'll be the first movie I've seen in 3D. It's just the wait man, it's painful.

How can you fault the director of a movie for wanting to show the movie in a light that he thinks will best represent it?

Or maybe he should just make a trailer with yakety sax in the background and beach babes running around naked with clips of the movie interlaced.

Moving cautiously? Who the hell even cares? At the end of the day it's a FREAKING movie. You're not some prophet standing by the roadside waving his arms and shouting "YOU'RE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE," as the rest of us trapse down the road to our ultimate destruction...which comes at the hands of Avatar.

Who the hell cares if people end up disappointed? That's not a fate worse than death.

dah fuck?....... Nothing was shown and people really getting excited over an announcement of an announcement? :S

The difference is the leap from b & w to color didn't require the user to wear an accessory. Same with the leap from radio to moving pictures. 3d is fun, but until it doesn't require glasses, it will be a novelty.

Exactly. Do I want it to be incredible and in keeping with the tradition of Cameron's movies? Of course, but ultimately, if I go and it's wank, I'll leave and I almost certainly won't miss the few quid I spent.
