AVclub - stumblydrunk drake[spoiler gif] when animation goes wrong

Maybe he actually DOES have OCD! Ever think of that? In that case the animations are perfectly justified!

I would seriously buy 3 copies of the game if ND actually came out and gave that as the canonical explanation for the constant wall/bush touching.

Bethesda releases the buggiest fucking games. Never could understand why people laud them so much.

If I was making a game, I would probably put something like this in intentionally.
Edit: Honestly, is this not on purpose? The crate could have a hole cut into it, after all, and he talks about being the best infiltrator.

The worst issue with idle animations I had was Infamous 1, I don't know if they fixed it in 2 or not. Cole has this move where he holds up his hand to put up a shield in front of him. It doesn't cover his whole body front and back, just a limited disc or c-shaped area in front of him. Ok, no real problems so far...

Let's say you're actually using it, and you're waiting for the right moment to attack or something. Cole gets bored almost immediately, and starts doing idle animations, swinging his arms around a bit and such. The shield is tied directly to his hand during these animations and will move from in front of you, letting you be hit. Which means if you're actively using the shield, you have to remember to move Cole tiny amounts if you pause for any reason, or you're going to take pointless damage.

Joke thread? Joke thread.
C'mon, this must be like the God tier of the nitpicking threads in GAF.
People should be first complaining about other stuff (buggy as hell games i.e Skyrim) instead of things like: "Oh, he tried to 'wall touch' a bush".
I mean, please.
Seriously.

ND are just trying to make the animations as fluid and dynamic as possible, adding all kinds of little touches. You may think it's overdone or that it's still off, but it's actually an interesting direction and an achievement as far as animation goes, something that wasn't possible years ago.

We used to have static animations for everything, animations that were built in a vacuum and didn't take anything into account. For some games that's fine, but not for others so, for example, some fighting games started making the characters look at his/her opponent, which made them feel less like robots and more like two people in a fight.

Resident Evil did something similar, with your character looking at the dead bodies/zombies/whatever making the game more scary. Just think about it, you entered a new area and suddenly Claire/Leon looks to the right; not only it's telling you that there's something there (which is a good game mechanic since it warns you that you are in danger) but it also adds to the tension of the game.

This is the next step.

Uncharted animation overrated? Shocker.

The animation blending has always lead to stuff looking weird as fuck.

I don't think there are any games that actually have animation to match the hyperbole spouted about the series, let alone the series itself.

You know what other game has really good animation? Battlefield 3. Don't you agree?

Yeah, that shit is tops:

More gifs of bad animations please.

Oh fuck me. that cracked me up no end. so fucking funny. so funny.

lmao.

Haha, good grief. There's room for criticism of course, but the level of nit-picking tossed at Uncharted 3 is ridiculously pedantic at best.

The game's not flawless, no. But it really doesn't mean that when Drake reaches out to touch a bush (which I think is fine actually, I do it sometimes) that the game is a mess or anything.

why is talking about the oddities that comes from UC's method of motion blending nitpicking? Did I forget its a sacred cow that can't be criticised?

This isn't nearly as bad as the SALT WATER PARTICLES nitpicking someone had of the original Uncharted.

I don't remember no salt water particles in UC1.

By the way, i'm replaying the game in crushing and the head tilting makes total sense. Sometimes he reaches his neck kinda like looking for stuff. Let's remember that he's actually looking for clues constantly, so that what may seem a wall may give him hints of what to look for. Sometimes it may repeat itself a bit too much, but it's part of the character no doubt (chateau atm).

...

Lets not make this about UC3 but I honestly haven't played a game in recent memory where the basic motion of your avatar made me wonder what they were thinking.

...

Are there any other games where the animation TD made choices you don't agree with? ITT where the animation throws you out of the suspension of belief.

Oh, and Jax, pro-tip; if you intended this topic to be a more general discussion about animation quirks, you shouldn't devote a big starting post to a game that's already being discussed to death in various forms. At the very least, don't act surprised if some posters think the game is being nitpicked to death like some earlier posters. :P As you can see, pretty much the entire topic is solely about Uncharted 3.

I love the animation in Uncharted 3. It might be exaggerated, but its better than your character looking like a robot. I think for the most part it looks really, really good.

I must say that outside of music/sound glitches animation glitches are the ones that stand out the most to me. I was about to mention Skyward Sword but that's still a bit spoilerish so I'll go with Red Dead Redemption instead. My brother bought it and he told me to come watch because this world was alive and all that. Minutes later I saw dogs floating and we were laughing at some animation bugs that the NPC's suffered from. Nothing breaks immersion like stupid/buggy/bad animations. The first Assassins Creed also had a ton of stupid animation issues. Especially in games like Uncharted and Red Dead, that try to immerse the player in this movie-like world they can take away a lot from the experience.

GTA4 and euphoria

I don't know, I do that touch-the-bushes thing when running through unknown terrain. Sure made running through woods much easier especially when it was dark.

Causes more problems gameplay wise then it's worth. Not much fun having to do a perfect 3 meter radius turn so I can get on the doorway on the first try.

Haha yeah I've always said I didn't mind the vehicle driving in GTA4, it was the Niko driving that was the pain in the ass.

Just read about the changes to the animation system. Holyshit. maybe they'll fix all the retardation of the UC franchise with the patch. Shouldn't have played this til they had gone gold with the UC3 fixed edition. The GOTY edition is going to be the definitive copy of this game

btw. I thought the way they changed the fighting animations was much worse. In UC2 it was full of smooth transitions, in UC3 not so much.

I dont think that it will change much regarding what you mention in the first post. If you walk upto a wall and the animation of the hand start to rise, then you turn quickly away from the wall, then the hand/arm will still rise. The game cant forsee your every move. The bush thingie is most likely due to an invisible wall (i actually think that the bush example ads more realism. Who havnt touched something in the woods when walking through it? :)).

This video actually makes me want to play this game even though I have zero interest in soccer, haha.

the demo (and video) are based on a build from months ago, the final game isn't nearly as bad and actually has a very impressive animation engine.

There are still some problems where it tries to blend two animations that clearly don't work and a player will quickly flip or something stupid but it works most of the time and can lead to some really cool and unpredictable moments.

Or will fix nothing like a Bethesda GOTY edition generally doesn't.

its uncommon a game like this gets patched. I expect it to do something substantial.

so many "i touch bush" comments since page 1.

I had a hilarious glitch in UC3 where the animation in one of the cutscenes just completely stopped and everybody was just floating around without moving their arms or legs, and they made sort of a hopping motion instead of walking.

Like someone already said, it's most likely a MP patch. Probably the only thing that will get fixed in the SP is the aiming.
