Awesome regional differences in games

All the Chinese artwork for League of Legends is, in my opinion, way better than what Riot comes up with for America. Examples:

I actually prefer Green's sprites to RB's with a few exceptions. As a whole the sprites look so fresh compared to the set in stone style we have now and a lot of them have much more interesting poses and dynamic. They're genuinely creepy/threatening looknig too.

Creepy for all the wrong reasons, IMO. wtf is going on with Mew's head?

This isn't exactly classed as 'awesome', but!

Beetle Adventure Racing was quickly mutated into HSV Adventure Racing for Australia. Thing is, EA had already released BAR here in fairly limited supply, so they basically released the same game twice.

HSV Adventure Racing just replaces the cars, and the announcer is some British guy trying to do their best Australian accent.

Interesting to see a kanji font in a Famicom game... most of the games I've seen have strictly kana fonts.
Some that do have kanji are also small and completely unreadable.

For a rare audio example, the US version of Castlevania III lacked the VRC6 chip that the Famicom version had implemented. The added sound channels make the tracks in the Famicom version sound better than the ones in the NES version.

Here's the NES version of the Stage 1 theme:

...And here's the (superior) Famicom version

Castlevania III in general had some subtle differences between the US and JP versions, this being one of them:

SHIT. The difference is astounding! They were gettin down on the Famicom version! Was that Michiru Yamane?

Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64 was actually released and marketed very differently to how we saw it in the west. In Japan, it was called Red and Black and the marketing materials were much more "arty". I really like them.

This is what we got

They even changed Joanna's appearance to be more "oriental" as the creators put it.

These are the sprites for Red (those earlier ones are either japanese Red or in Green)

edit actually these are from Yellow.

Here's them a generation later:

Oh geez. I forgot how amazing the original pokemon sprites were. Such an amazing game.

the name in the japanese images is still "perfect dark"..and the second version of Joanna is the one from the remake for xbla

Couple more Ristar things to mention (and as for the "I don't remember that" comment, I'm confused by that myself, but a lot of people swear to it, it might be different in Mega Collection or something).

Sega was toying with the idea of changing Ristar's name to "Dexstar" for the US and European release.

md0812-title.gif

This isn't the first time Ristar's name would be changed, as it wasn't even his original name. He was in development at one point as "Feel":

feel01.jpg

At some point I remember hearing it referred to "Feel the Flame", but I can't find a reference to that now. But even on top of that, one of the earliest available prototypes has the header "Volt -- the voltage", and the final version of the game includes a stern little note, "RISTAR IS NOT.... VOLT!" Now look at the design on his shoes.

More pictures and such from here again.

I remember this, they were going to change it, but people complained about that, so they stuck with the original name.

Contra 3/Super Probotector Alien Rebels or also known as When Europeans suddenly got awesome robots.
Wow, what a blatant rip-off of Briareos from Appleseed.

More "cross" censorship, this time from the .hack series!

Carmageddon 2 got the similar treatment. As far as I remember 3 versions of the game were released:
- Version with humans (red blood)
- Version with zombies (green blood, different skin) made for Germany
- Version with dinosaurs (yellow blood?) was made for Australia or something like that, don't remember much about this one.

Carmageddon 2 with DINOSSAURS ?????

those are 300 times best those robots stuff ! =D

edit ------------------------------------------
Or somebody's memory sucked .... or i'm having problems finding ... but all I found was Dinosaurs in the german version of the Carmageddon 64

The World Ends With You has a bunch of these. One of my favorites is a variety of pins, which were renamed to commonly recognized Japanese terms (Shinobi, Mt. Fuji, etc.) in the localized version, were named after various Japanese gaming magazines in the Japanese version, along with matching pin graphics to go with them.

Great topic. Some of these games I haven't even played, but it's still pretty cool to see the changes that were made.

Yay a thread where I can repost this again:

This is the Saudi UAE/Malay Singaporean version. It's a US region NTSC but with the awesome art.
The 3DS itself had a Saudi UAE version as well which was the same as the US but with a 220v charger. This is actually the first time we get:
  • An official release at launch. The previous official releases (PS3/360) came a couple years later.
  • In US NTSC. Official PS3/360 releases are European PAL, even though everything available before official release was US NTSC.
  • With a custom package (label on the box + different charger).

There's some cool differences between the Sega CD version and the Japanese version of Snatcher it was based on.

The scene with the dead dog also originally showed it twitching a bit in the original game, instead of being stiff dead in the NA release.

There were also several changes to prevent copyright problems, such as changing the club to Outer Heaven (from Joy Division) and the Snatchers were made to look more like generic robots rather than Terminator knockoffs.

No, that's just perfect dark vs perfect dark xbla

This is a pretty small change, but it was interesting to me at least. In F-Zero GX, whenever you finish a circuit in GP mode, you get to ask your character a question in an interview segment. Black Shadow has one less question than every other character in the English version - the reason for this is because if you ask him if he has a message for his rivals, he says "I'll send you all straight to hell".

Umm, ignore XBLA part.

Top = Perfect Dark N64 US/PAL
Bottom = Perfect Dark N64 JP

Could you seriously not see the difference?

I do apologise for the Red and Black thing though, I was sure they called it Red and Black.

Yeah, it was the N64 version, thanks!
But the zombies were there on the PC, I'm 100% sure about that because that was the version of the game that I played.

I'm not entirely sure how this worked (I'm not sure if the new sprites were used in Japan before they were used in North America), but the original sprites for Pokemon Red and Green were hilariously bad.
I think the sprites we got were actually from the Japanese version of Pokemon Blue, which was a super version of the original Red/Green. In Japan, Blue was their "third version" (though I think they also got Yellow) so it had a lot of updated material. Nintendo used that build as the base game for the American versions (although they kept the version exclusive Pokemon split from R/G).

Revenge of Shinobi on the Megadrive (Genesis)

I had a switch in the machine which would toggle between EU an JAP versions of the console (bypassed a resistor if i remember).

In one of tha later levels on the JAP version you came up against Spiderman and Batman?.. on the EU, i think it was just a normal goon. My memory is pretty shot so maybe someone here remembers better.

Disaster Report and Raw Danger have a hilarious localisation. They decided to change a bunch of the characters to blonde (everyone is Japanese in the original game). However, due to the limited number of hair colours it often makes enormous crowds of blonde people. Very strange. (Still two of my favourite games of all time)

You are either the father or brother of the damsel in distress, because Square thought that America likes old burly geriatrics and Japan likes waify androgynous teens.
Actually a friend of mine told me the Father was created first. The Brother was created afterwards.

Firefly customized the campaign map of Stronghold according to the region... this is the one i played, from the spanish version:

I liked it, and back in the day i didnt realized this wasnt the same for everybody... hell, till the other day when i saw my roommate playing with the British map xD

Same game, but more Australian flavor. The menus have "Waltzing Matilda" the entire time, like that was the only song we ever wrote :P

Technically this isn't "in" the game, but I just found out what the Sly Collection box art looks like in Japan, thanks to a related search I was doing for the Silent Hill Collection thread, and I'm jealous.

Oh wow, that looks phenomenal, especially compared to the 5 minute photoshop job we got

Snatcher has more regional differences than I can possibly go into here. Place names, logos, character bios, graphics, story elements, you name it.

For example, one of the more famous examples is Katrina Gibson's age being changed from 14 to 18 in the Western version so that Gillian's advances are merely creepy rather than borderline criminal.

Pretty much all the info can be found here, its a fascinating read:
