Thought experiment?

Season 2 Lol GIF by Insecure on HBO

In an appeal to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court, lawyers representing a group of gamers suing to block the deal over antitrust concerns point to a purported internal Microsoft email they describe as “uncontroverted evidence that Microsoft had the intention to put its main competition, the Sony PlayStation, out of the market.”
  • The contents of the message are redacted, but the plaintiffs say it was sent by Microsoft’s head of Xbox game studios (Matt Booty) to Microsoft’s chief financial officer for Xbox (Tim Stuart).

this seems thread-worthy IMO, for all their talk about how this was to bring games to more gamers blah blah blah etc. it ends up that in private they were talking about what most of us knew was likely the truth, Xbox hopes to kill off their main competition in the console space

gotta love how Phil Spencer was out there not long ago claiming PlayStation was trying to grow by shrinking Xbox when that’s exactly what his company is trying to do

Anyway why is this news? Of course the purchase is made to put Sony out of business. Do we all think Sony signed a deal to keep FF16 off of Xbox just for shits and giggles?

The end game for all of these companies is to be #1.
Because they say this isn't about sony and only about mobile
And we have statements like when everybody plays we all win
And stuff like this

…wow, did you seriously compare a third-party exclusive to buying the largest publisher in the industry?

Sony’s focus seems to be more about trying to sell as many consoles as they can to make money, Microsoft is the one openly signaling that’s not enough for them (such as Phil’s recent comments about how even if Starfield was 11/10 it wouldn’t get people to sell their PS5’s)

PlayStation seems pleased as long as you buy their system, Xbox wants you to buy their system and ONLY theirs

Aren't they the same thing? Sony is pleased you buy their system because certain games don't even come to others, hence not wanting you to buy elsewhere because you'll miss out. Same with Microsoft.

It is called competition after all, not sure why people expect companies to just let the others steamroll them down without trying something. Do we think mergers are just happy fun time coincidences of interests?

Not comparing the two at all in terms of scale, only intention. To weaken their competition.

This is a big nothing burger.

The article doesn’t even have the email at issue. Just the plaintiff’s filings which will always try to present the evidence in the most favorable light.

Not saying that email isn’t damaging to MS’s case, but there isn’t really anything here to discuss since the actual substance is redacted.

Microsoft doesn’t want to compete, they want to dominate

Hell no. It would release with cross play and Day 1 on Gamepass as the audience already exists. The main goal isn't to destroy Sony which a lot of these fanboys think. It's to improve their distant 3rd place marketshare and build up Game Pass.

So you think Microsoft wants to remain in third place and not try to kill the competition?

LOL.

Come on, dude.

I remember this conversation I had months ago.

Honestly, I'm sure if any company could get their way to eliminate the competition (or at least get them in a weak spot) and be on top I'm sure they would do it in a heartbeat. They were just willing to drop a ton of money to try and get leverage where they could, and I don't blame them.
