In the past couple of years Japanese anime has taken a huge in animation and quality, and originality imo. The only original show that was great was Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Every new anime season is made up mostly of moe anime and school setting which was made thousands of times and basically unwatchable to me.

Even adapting anime from manga is mostly bad because the anime is not faithful to the manga and has plenty of fillers.

While in the US there has been a lot original and high quality animation like Avatar the last airbender, Generator Rex, Legend of Korra, etc.... And lately great adaptation of comic books like Young Justice, and my favorite animated show on tv Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. American animation has stepped up big time in the past couple of years and became quit great.

Anyway do you think that original anime in Japan is dead?

I've been a bit unplugged from the animu scene for the last few years, but barring Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and a couple of other trully creative and well produced shows, the state of American animation is fucking horrid.

There is crapload of ghetto ass Newgrounds stuff being passed as TV shows.

Edit: Scratch that, Newgrounds actually has some really good shorts. I'm talking about bottom of the Adobe Flash barrel.

If Symbionic Titan had been allowed to flourish as it should've there would've been no fucking question of this :(

I agree for the most part. but that's just my opinion, people have different tastes, and anime was not made to appeal to me.

although every now and then something great is produced, like Full Metal Alchemist, and currently Attack on Titan.

> Anime is bad now because of high school settings

> American animation is great now because of Not Teen Titans and the second remake of an 80's show

I love both. Not seeing your point.

There hasn't been an anime I've really enjoyed since JoJo, and there isn't a cartoon series I've devoted time to since Samurai Jack (though Adventure Time is close.)

Both are pretty 'meh' right now.

There hasn't been a really good, really consistent shonen manga to compliment a shonen anime since One Piece.

Oh, despite the contemperary HS setting? I suggest Mysterious Girlfriend X, Kids on the Slope, and hell even Dangan Ronpa if you want something a bit creative.

No way. Not even close. Sure there's a lot of crap, but Studio Bones is still going strong and Steins;Gate was very recent. The Persona 4 Anime was fantastic as well.

Admittedly though, I just don't care for the look American animation. And I couldn't possibly care less about superheroes.

I thought it was only battle shounen adaptions that do this? Most other manga adaptions get split into "seasons".

Every time I try to get over that, the wounds come back tenfold.

I stopped watching American cartoons since Cartoon Network did the unthinkable, getting rid of all the quality cartoon for reality tv. I know they reverted back, but they lost me with that terrible move. American cartoons will never have the quality like Courage the Cowardly dog anymore.

I have a list if you want.

The last few years have been horrible. There´s almost zero creativity and the settings are very similar for a lot of them.

You should really check Teenage mutant ninja turtles, it´s great, humorous, has graet animation and plot.

The only original show that was great was Medoka (sp) and Kyuubi (the cat).

This made me laugh. I guess it's because I imagined it like a 4 year old trying to remember the name of a TV show but giving a descriptive title based on their favorite elements and presenting it in a matter-of-fact tone.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 >>>>> American cartoons

Fuck, I need to get back into HxH...I stopped at around the time Gon and Killua get into some fucking video game idk

Attack on Titan gets stale after the first few episodes.

American animation is horrible too computerized and without soul.

Canadian cartoons and Gravity Fall, maybe.

Probably just because I'm getting older, but I'm just not a fan of most action shows anymore (American or Japanese). I'm really enjoying slice of life anime like Genshiken and My Ordinary Life.

Not a big cartoon fan nowadays, but from what I've seen it has gone down the tubes. Remember Batman:TAS? Well now we have "Beware the Batman", some cartoonishly silly garbage that looks like a PS1 videogame cutscene. Other shows look like basic Flash animation and are pathetic in comparison to some 90s series. Can't really judge stories considering my experience of the old shows was colored by my childhood... I will say this though, at least they stopped the ridiculous censorship! Seeing cops pull out freaking laser guns was ridiculous.

The problem comes more from you watching shit to begin with really. I mean for christ sake you cant even get the name of the show you actually liked right. A bit hard to take ones opinion seriously after seeing that.

Attack on Titan is pretty boss (*hides from duckroll*), but it can't stand up alone against Young Justice, Legends of Korra, Green Lantern, and Avengers EMH.

Attack on Titan gets stale after the first few episodes.

.

You really need to watch more than the first few episodes. Just saying.

I've just started watching Gravity Falls, so I'm understandably feeling pretty good about the American cartoon biz.

I've always felt like Japanese animation filled a different niche to the western stuff, so I doubt there's any great risk of one falling drastically behind the other.

While I do not agree with the OP assumptions about anime....

I dunno about that, there are some really good cartoons.

yeah everyone has different taste but HxH2011got me back into anime after i took a big break at the end of death note :D
oh and Gurren Lagann is also pretty amazing

If an anime is incapable of keeping me enthralled in it's world and it's characters after the 5th episode, it is /not/ for me. No point in watching something I don't enjoy.

Be sure to watch the remake its amazing :D

There's a HxH anime remake? How far is that into the story? Might consider it.

I've stopped watching Nick a long ass time ago, and everytime I hear Booyakasha from those fucking TMNT commercials I throw something. A Rabbids cartoon to go with it reminds me how low Nick has truly gone.

Tiger and bunny and ano hana were great and those were recent.

Recently though american animation shows are killer, Korra, regular show, AT, The venture bros, young justice and gravity fall are amazing.

Meduka (sp) and kyuubi the cat was the best show if its year. Only American cartoon I've seen that's really that engaging with the story is Korra, and even that had the love triangle bullshit bogging it down.

I think there's a case to be made for both, but American and Japanese shows just tend to have different strengths because of the culture difference.

They're both kind of in a rut right now, but there are still one or two gems every year. One big difference is that the American studios tend to stick to one franchise while Japanese studios have new shows almost every one or two seasons. At least the ones I follow, anyway.

People here are just proving OP's point. The recent anime mentioned are based on video game, manga, light novel, or visual novel.

As someone who never thought there was any difference between the two beyond cultural ones, and tends to judge shows are their own merits....yeah. I just cannot get back into anime nowadays. My every attempt I find myself bored, or I actively hate the program. I'm sure there's good stuff out there. I just can't seem to find it. Conversely, I'm really enjoying American animation right now. Regular Show, TMNT, Young Justice, Green Lantern. Good stuff.

I watched Jojo's recently and loved that. Same with Tiger and Bunny. Kinda meh to Sword Art Online, and leaning toward disliking it. Guessing I'll give Attack on Titan a shot since that's the new hot shit. Excited to see the the new season of Ippo.

There are still a few really good cartoon shows being aired in the US, but there's still a ton of terrible stuff on still being aired, we just choose to ignore it. It's about the same in Japan, though I'm no expert.

When has anime not been based on any of these?

The problem with American animation is that shows still get canceled half the time before they finish their intended story arc run. This seems to be in part because the creators of the problem refuse to follow the Japanese method of planning a 13 or 26 episode story arc that can provide a satisfying conclusion to a series.

American animation is still kind of stuck in a "dramatic ghetto"; I was talking about it with a friend. High quality all-ages shows like Gravity Falls are on the rise, and screwball comedy aimed purely at adults is now taken for granted. But the west still can't quite comprehend animation used for drama or dramatic comedy. Anything that comes close to action or adventure is usually conceptualized as being for 8-10 year old boys, though obviously modern show runners know differently and are trying their best to make American animation more sophisticated in those genres. (Personally, in years to come I think Tron Uprising will be looked back upon as a stylistic breakthrough for American-produced animation.)

DC Comics is, however, a notable exception with their direct to video animated films. They seem to increasingly be going straight for the adult market and people who would normally watch dramatic Japanese animation with hard edged story telling.

Sounds like it.

And I'm not even sure what OP's point is exactly. Are we strictly talking about original titles? Maybe not, since after three US examples (one of which is a sequel and another isn't quite original), titles of adaptations are given. And "original works are dead in Japan as of late"? Seems to me there's actually been a very noticeable comeback in that area over the past couple of years.

I love how the OP put all the cartoons of one country in 1 bag of bad stereotype and claim that his country shows are better because reasons.
