Ballmer: Windows 8 biggest thing since Win 95'

Haha, that was fantastic.

I'm so glad the public eye has given the thumbs down for Windows 8, means there's hope for Windows 9.

It's not fantastic; it's pointless. Just sitting in front of software they know nothing about doesn't prove anything. If they had been given a short introduction to the OS, those videos would have turned out differently.

The public eye hasn't really judged the OS yet, either. Most regular people have no idea what's coming. We'll see how much they'll hate it in a couple of months.

It's one of those threads.

I've been using Windows 8 for a while and it doesn't deserve the hate. It is pretty much Windows 7 with a new way to organize and launch apps. If there were subfolders on the new Metro UI it would be better, but it is hardly unusable. If you've used any modern smartphone or tablet and can't use metro the I don't even know how to help you.

Then you just failed to grasp the essence of why people are against it. It's not because people don't know how to use it, it's because people don't want that smartphone / tablet interface on their desktop or part of their user experience. Plus it isn't very good or intuitive, just a crowbar job at best.

I'm a system admin and I have windows 8 running in my personal computer and experimental tablet.

Watching that system admin above made me cringe, he sounds like a complete lost case - as if he's unfamiliar with systems to begin with.

It's the same song and dance, people go ape shit crazy when they see change. I know because I system admin a lot of users, the smallest change causes tears.

I can't believe the entire thread isn't just people saying 'wat'

also, somebody said 'wasn't ME good'

I will never take gaf seriously regarding windows OS ever again.

Using 8 right now. I like it and will buy that surface.

Some of GAF was in diapers back when 95 came out and were eating crayons in Kindergarten when ME was released.

ive had the install on my desktop for like...3 months now..i just know if i want to mess with it yet, anyone tried it out and can tell me the benefits. And i mean doing what an OS does, im not picky about interfaces i learn them. I mean does the os noticeably handle memory better, load faster, balance cores/multitasking better etc etc. Is that a tangible upgrade? Im also looking into why some dev's are weary about their new app store.

He is a nice guy. Friendly and not arrogant.
I met him here in cologne as i work for microsoft.

Here was in our quarter to hold a speech for the windows phone in 2010

I'm not sure if I agree with this developer developer developer developer.

Everyone I knew who was running W8 has already gone back to Windows 7, it's amazing.

That's pretty much where I am, tried it, hated it, went back to 7.

No point going over all the reasons why again, in yet another thread, all I will say is thank fuck for the preview versions - saved me some money.

I'm not sure people themselves understand why they are against it. To me it doesn't feel like tablet crowbarred onto the desktop. Not even a little bit. Having a nice dashboard come up that organizes the things you do most into a clean set of icons seems more intuitive than having to dig though the Start menu looking for stuff. You can still place icons on the task bar and desktop if that's how you roll, and the desktop works pretty much just like Windows 7.

It takes some getting used to not having the old Start menu, but it doesn't seem as bad as people are saying it is. I think most folks are making assumptions not having used it.

If you want to go that route, our system admin loved Windows 8 and put it on his personal system at work, so whatever :P

I've started to give Win8 to people whether they want it or not :p

And server 2012 is awesome

Administrating the 6.2 environment will be awesome

It's a faster version of 7 with a larger, more customizable start menu. I've never understood the massive deluge of negative remarks that occur in every Windows 8 thread on Gaf.

These videos are so stupid. That admin's an idiot if he can't figure it out, and the older guy is afraid of using computers in general.

Am I the only one who likes to learn new things?

Change, bring it on.
So change for the sake of change and NOT for improvement. Gotcha.

When in W7 SP2 due? Is it even going to happen?

yeah they change it for the sake of it.

not for creating a cohesive platform overarching ecosystem

not for creating a complex could service

not for creating a unified user interface and feel across all microsoft products

not for creating a new type of application that runs across all devices on different chipsets

not for creating an easier way of launching apps without the need of complex folder structures, without taking the ability to browse them away.

yeah its just for the sake of it.

Don't you have the option of running win8 in a classic view vs. metro view? Isn't it identical to win7 in classic view?
yes there is a desktop. one click away from the start screen. the only thing changed is that the start menu is replaced by the start screen (same functionality as the start menu for the most part, just full screen) and there is no start button. you hit the windows key or a corner UI to get the start screen. hasn't really changed my work flow.

Idiot?

Look at the date of the video, it was a year ago, if somebody had pranked me, at my work PC by replacing it with Windows 8 a year ago I'd probably have had a similar reaction.

But of course, it's easier to assume someone reacting in such a way is a technophobic idiot rather than consider the context of such a reaction.

I think you need to look for a highly reflective surface and look closely to se who the idiot actually is.
