'Batman: Arkham Asylum' (PS3/X360/PC) Officially Announced

Just played the demo on my PC (once without PhysX enabled and once with - using an ATI card just to see what would happen lol). As expected it ran like shit with it enabled, despite that I liked it a lot better with a 360 controller vs. the PS3 controller.

I did have a strange issue though. Before running the game I got a warning saying that my Realtek HD audio had known issues with the demo (and final game? don't remember what it said but could be assumed) and to play at my own risk and consult the readme for issues. The game ran fine but I could hear some annoying static coming out of my center channel... hope this wouldn't be an issue with the final game; I've never had any trouble with my audio drivers being supported so far, seems strange.

Between that possible issue, me possibly upgrading for PhysX, and me wanting the Collector's Edition for the Batarang, I'm torn.

Correct.

The steam is really impressive in that comparison video, it appears to be displaced as batman walks through it.

Yup, it performs as advertised :) The cloth-tearing itself is amusing, I spent a few minutes just chucking Batarangs through the flags hanging from the rafters for shits and giggles.

still torn on which version to get. I prefer the 360 controller, but I really want the Joker dlc. Guess I should hold off for reviews.

Will the Joker DLC/Challenge mode just be a side-game? Or is it unlocked once you finish the main mode? If it's unlocked from the beginning then I'm thinking of buying the 360 version and just renting/borrowing the PS3 version to play the DLC. I definitely prefer the 360 version for the controller and I think it looks better (not that the PS3 looks or plays badly, of course)

I've had an idea to try on the last section of the demo - off to try it now. If it works it could be excellent! :D

For those of you (like me) who might be curious about what PhysX effects in the game look like, here's a video I found:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vINH6Z9kqgI

I wish I hadn't watched it, because it's seriously making me consider buying a new video card, which is pretty retarded seeing that I just bought this ATI one a little over a month ago.

Someone earlier said that the framerate takes a big hit with PhysX enabled though... to get those effects running smooth do you need to be running SLI? Or would like a gtx 280 be sufficient?

I played the PC demo (with PhysX on) after playing the PS3 demo, and I completely overlooked all those nice little touches, aside from the steam which I had no idea was due to PhysX.

As for performance, I'm using an 8800 GTS 640MB and it was running great with PhysX on.

Very cool demo.

I like it how you can throw those batarangs (whatever they are called) at the tv screens and they break.

Also if you throw one and press RB to throw insted of trigger it goes into this little special view camera which looks nice aswell.

Yeah I've got a 4890 1GB. What's funny is I bet the card has the power to run those effects but Nvidia has an exclusive patented deal on some shit that blocks it from running it properly (but what do I know). I mean... I was able to run PhysX with it, but the framerate just dropped considerably. Ugh it really pisses me off that to have those effects run with a good framerate I need an Nvidia card. What pisses me off more is that I'm considering trying to sell my 4890 and buying a gtx 260 just so I am able to run PhysX effects in games.

I guess I'm just bitter because I built this computer with the intent of it being able to run everything on the market at max effects, but it seemed that I made 1 slight oversight in shrugging off PhysX since it didn't seem like many games were utilizing it. Damn you hindsight!

Edit: You know what, I think I'll just get the PS3 version so I can get the Collector's Edition (which apparently isn't available in the US on PC) and the Joker content. And then sometime down the line when it's cheaper and I've gotten my next (Nvidia) video card, I'll double dip on Steam. There's bound to be an awesome Steam deal at some point :lol

Yeah. I broke all three of the monitors while the Joker was talking to me.:lol
sadly no added conversation :(

Grabbed the 360 demo but due to all the ps3 demo playing (the new one and the challenge room one) the 360 pad feels weird. =/

Those screens above appears to show the PS3 version looking slightly better, which is interesting considering it's a multiplatform Unreal Engine game. But then again they've been showing it off on the PS3 for quite awhile now, plus it was delayed. I am glad that they took their time on it to make it a very good multiplatform release.
Yay! We all win.

Looking forward to playing as the Joker too. That video looked sweet.

Saw an ad on tv last night advertising the exclusive Joker stuff for the PS3 version. Since I don't see much game commercials lately, I was surprised.

The demo runs surprisingly well on my E6850, 8800GTX PC. That is until it makes the demo crash. So that's a no go then as suspected. Shame. The Physx stuff is pretty cool. If you're getting the PC version and don't have a wired 360 controller you're doing it wrong.

In any case it feels like I expected it to. Awesome.

What's wrong with wireless? :P

DirectX11 and OpenCL will put an end to manufacturer specific physics APIs. Even if they don't Havok is already being ported to both Larrabee and ATI hardware, so you'll be seeing games with GPU accelerated physics on your 4890 before long.

Mirror's Edge is the only other worthwile Physx implementation and even then its not a deal breaker, just a nice bonus. Its a non factor, keep your 4890, its a great card.

Fwiw, I'm running a GTX 260 myself.

PS3 version wins this time, hands down. Don't get mad now :lol :lol
After looking at the Physix enabled youtube video I think you can hardly say either of the console version wins. PC (with Nvidea card) wins HANDS DOWN.

Really sucks multiplatform now has another big advantage on PC.

tried the demo on ps3 and its pretty fun...graphics are great too..and i like the xray mode

but the camera gets annoying when fighting and also some of the control mechanics seem a bit weak...also hope the whole game isnt in the asylum...

Cannot unsee the creepy face staring at me on Batman's back in this pic. It's piercing my soul. :(

I had Batman dreams last night and Batman was fighting Phoenix from F-Zero (yesterday unlocked the AX tracks in GX).

Day one. The demo was awesome.

Bububut....I want steam in my batman game :(

Lol. I know I'm overreacting that's what's sad. I'll get over it in a day or two and in all honestly will probably end up getting a console version since I'm a sucker for owning a baterang.

So all fanboyz are happy now.
PC gets the best graphics.
PS3 gets the best contents
360 gets the best controller.

I'm surprised you people are liking the demo that much because i was annoyed how straightforward it is and spoon-fed to the player. What good is there for 'stealth' when you have a gadget that highlights the enemies' position and direction, plus they even count for you how much enemies are in the area and how much of them are armed.. and let's not forget that this gadget can even spot them through walls.

Where the heck is the challenge? where's the part of having the player himself figure stuff for himself? Always prompting to use the "detective skills" whenever you need to, it's like leaving no option for the player to explore and try stuff out. You don't even need to aim that grapple hook, there's no "meat" to the game. Pressing 'F' from one gargoyle to the other, dropping and silent killing. The demo wasn't long but i do see the potential of it becoming repetitive.

The hand-to-hand combat was weird. The movement is somewhat stiff and awkward and if there was any room to talk about bulky, shiny plastic-looking characters then that's an issue that should be raised in here.

The setting and atmosphere do look nice and the execuation of Rocksteady's direction doesn't seem to have any significant faults, and hey, at least no recharge health (though it does to fill up after each area cleared) but i'm not sure how substantial the gameplay is going to be. Way too easy and spelled-out going by the demo.

Exclusive DLC is so annoying. Now there is no preferable version really. The sweet deal The Hut had pushed me over to PS3 side. Emphasis on had.

Yeah, £22.44 was too good an offer to refuse :D , for 1 day you could use hut10 for an extra 10% off.
Was getting PS3 version anyway.

Pleasantly surprised by the demo. It seems a bit easy (silent takedowns, dumb AI) and linear, but the presentation is great and using the classic Batman: TAS voice cast wins points in my books.

Seems like a great summer title, went from zero interest to "I wanna play that". Not sure about a full price purchase, but will rent day 1 and go from there.

Runs great on the PS3 as well, a nice change of pace from usual multi-plat failings.

What's this about the PS3 version having extra content?

I'm going to assume that the spoon feeding is because its the first level of the game.

Anyone else get a message on the PC version warning you that you have not got the most up to date Nvidia drivers even though they are installed ?

Looks great on PC Im able to run it with max settings (GTX 260) with acceptable framerate, Im having a problem with the camera constantly spinning when the game lets you take control so ill have to figure that out, here's a shot I took:

You would've said that even if the ps3-version ran at 5fps and had only wireframe optics.

Denying the fact that the opposite of this case is much more frequent doesn't put you far off from his level.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. That, and overall the game itself didn't seem that difficult, but I assume the demo was set to easy just as a default... I'm sure it won't be so simple playing it at increased difficulty in the full version.

Nice one. Now if you could just quote the part where I actually did this, I'll send you a sixpack o' beer over :)

PC gets the best graphics. True
PS3 gets the best contents Playable Joker ftw
360 gets the best controller. PC also has same controller, some prefer DS3

Game will play the same on each system, so everyone wins.

Looks like the usual Multiplatform stuff. Looks to me displacement maps have higher res on X360. Textures seem to be higher res on more place (except the flowers) Better reflection materials.

Appart from that closed UE3 MP game I have seen.
Except for the fact that they have the same exact textures. Maybe you should get your eyes checked instead of making shit up. The only difference I can see is that 360 has better AA, that's it. BTW the PC version looks amazing.
