'Batman: Arkham Asylum' (PS3/X360/PC) Officially Announced

I'm thinking about buying the US PS3 version when I'm over for PAX, but I'm a little worried about two things:

One, that if I decide to buy any DLC it'll be a hassle because I'm in the UK with a US copy of the game - anyone with more experience advising me on that would be great.

Two, that the TSA might stop me from leaving the country if I have a Batarang in my luggage.

So the full game features more than punching, hooking and gliding?
It also has sneaking, hanging and jumping! Oh, and hacking, talking and walking. Don't forget sprinting, kicking and dangling.

Before I say you belong in Arkham or something, what exactly were you looking for when you downloaded the demo?

And you grasped the entire story from just playing the demo?

A general idea of what the gameplay and graphics will be like and what the story will be about(just the general direction).

No, I didn't get the entire story, but the ending didn't leave me wanting from more.

I played the PS3 version and the PC version with all the settings maxed out at a decent frame rate. Considering the PC version had additional visuals features and a native 1920X1080 resolution it looked superior. Honestly I was surprised how well the console version held up to the PC maxed out; both versions are very impressive...

There's only been a few games that made good utilization of the UE3 engine, Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect, Bioshock, GOW and now Batman. I have to applaud the effort of the developer creating parity on the consoles and releasing an efficient PC version.

Day one purchase!

The story isn't anything special and you just fly around and punch dudes, while occasionally stealth-grabbing them and when feeling especially bored you can also glide-kick them.

I think it was Keir, he said on the official Batman: Arkham Asylum Forum ...the best thing about the full game is the story.

To each their own. Watch a couple vids and if you feel the same way, so be it.

Then there's this tidbit

Hi it's Keir from Eidos (I'm a community manager) and sorry to butt in, but I couldn't help myself.

The content of the demo is also pretty butchered, it plucks out a couple of bits from the first chapter, but misses lots of elements.

To give you our perspective... I was talking to Sefton Hill (the game director) yesterday about the demo and we kind of agreed it sells the game a bit short - there were a lot of discussions before it was released about whether it does the full game justice. Personally, I feel it sells it a bit short because the best thing about the full game is the story. There are two or three moments that will blow.. you.. away.

So it was a judgment call, obviously we wanted to get it out there, but it's difficult to release a demo that's comprehensive enough to show all the game's strengths.

Okay so you've played the demo. But you haven't viewed the trailers.

I played the PC demo yesterday. It was very good. Ran without a hitch on my aging X1900XT. No PhysX, but that's not much of a loss. I agree that it was a little short; they should have given us one boss fight right at the end... Amirite?

Question: did anyone listen to the Joker interviews?

Seems like it, dunno whether it's old or not but I was digging through the .ini for the PC game and found these.

What a waste of two hours of my life!

EDIT: I know it's shitty and unfunny, but I posted it anyway. So sue me :lol

:lol :lol :lol I know it sucks ass, I was just bored and it was something to do. I'm not trying to pass it off as something even remotely close to skillful or even funny

It's rope. Batman tied him up with fat, red rope

I thought Batman ripped out Joker's intestines and then tied him up with it...

I guess rope works too... :D

Anyway, I played the demo and it was fun. It felt a bit clunky but this game could pretty much be horrible and I would still get it because of Conroy, Hamill, and Dini.

I was not really all that interested in this till the demo. I'd seen a couple of trailers and pictures of the redesigned characters which looked cool but the game itself I wasn't fussed about.

Have to say I was surprised at how much I liked the stealth part in the demo, I usually hate stealth in games, I don't find sitting in a dark corner waiting to be all that fun or compelling. In this though it was alot more interesting and fun. Combat seems nice and simple but thoroughly entertaining especially when you manage to string together a bunch of strikes and counters, looks and feels very cool.

This really has gone from am "eh I think I'll pass" to me very much considering buying it when it comes out, minus batarang most likely.

This is why I love demos, I could very easily have missed out of this.

Was just about to comment on that; the PC version looked totally money. I was wondering how the poor PS3 AA which always bothers me affected the game.

This is true. The game presents a significantly sterner challenge on bastard hard mode. The content of the demo is also pretty butchered, it plucks out a couple of bits from the first chapter, but misses lots of elements.

That's a fair comment about the lack of difficulty options. I agree with you and think we missed a trick.

I just played the PS3 demo 3 times straight and I would have to say that to me personally, this game makes you feel like Batman in every way. I kinda don't like the matrix vision that Batman has, but I understand why it is there. The takedowns are the best part of the combat to me. The combat as a whole makes me feel like Batman and that is what is important to me if I am buying a Batman game.

This is making me greatly reconsider my "no new games @ $60 rule." Good Job

If you buy it at Amazon, you don't have to pay 60 nor 50 for that matter.

I have the PS3 version pre-ordered, but I hate getting games for the PS3 unless I have to. (much rather play them on the 360).
Is there any chance down the road that The Joker lvls will be DLC on Live after a couple months? This is the only reason I'm getting the PS3 version.

According to Eurogamer, there is zero percent chance, as Sony funded it.

CAW said:
Awesome. I didn't know that. I'm currently using W7RC1 (7100) 64bit. I'm going to look into that, thanks for the heads up!

Hey CAW, got some bad news...PhysX has some code that is apparently blocking the use of an ATI card simultaneously with an Nvidia card. You can however use both cards.

I'll send you a PM about this. Just want to give a heads up for others.

Platform-exclusive content is probably the worst new "feature" of the generation.

Still not getting the PS3 version.

Epic Tier 3 Engineer said:
Why wouldn't you get it? As a matter of principle or because you like the controls on the 360 better?
I'd get the PS3 version if I didn't have a gaming PC.

edit: Platform-exclusive stuff almost always fucks over a PC owner.

The PC version lokks better but why skip the PS3's exclusive content. Why have one and not take advantage of a rare PS3 multiplatform victory with the exclusive content?

Well you do pay $10 more for it.

If it was between PS3 and 360, I'd agree. ..but 1600p, 60 FPS (if I'm lucky) and all that useless physics-y stuff is hard to beat. Not to mention it's $10 cheaper.

you really don't think the Joker won't be modded into the PC version?

It would take a very long while for any modding community to fully replicate the levels in a game without a proper SDK.

I just wish the level editor worked. :( The workaround that worked with Mirror's Edge doesn't work with the demo executable, and I"m not sure if they disabled that command entirely or not.

Wow. Talk about an over hyped game or should I say demo. It went from maybe I'll buy it to maybe I'll buy it . Nothing says "must buy".

Does anyone know how to open up the settings window so I can change the graphic options and the like? I am talking about that window that pops up when you start the game for the first time.

I am playing the demo on Steam and can't find to seem anyway to open it up. Trying to skim through this thread for some answers doesn't seem to turn up anything.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Steam -> Steamapps -> Common -> Batman Arkham Asylum Demo -> Binaries -> BmLauncher.exe
