Not in Superior Spiderman Land.

Welp, to be fair, Jester hit him in the balls with a slingshot.

Batman can't kill because if he kills this guy then whats one more guy? then the next guy and the next one, and since batmanning is his full time job he'd be killing hundreds of criminals/people after a while, can he really call himself a good guy after that?

why not? punisher does, wolverine does, etc.

edit: hell, even captain america has a bodycount.

Batman himself recently said the "slippery slope" argument is a crock of crap. He knows he has enough self-control to kill Joker and leave it at that. He won't do it because of his code and his fear that something worse would arise to take Joker's place.

I wasn't passing a general judgement based on my moral codes, just the line of thinking bruce wayne might have.

the point of the comment is that this USED to be a fairly common trope in superhero comics, because of the comics code. Some characters refused to kill at all, others (like cap, and batman above) started out wasting fools without a second thought, but had a change of heart after the comics code kicked in.

There were even bizarre cases like wolverine who would constantly go on about stabbing dudes (or "popping the third claw") but never actually do so.

The comics code is a relic that LONG outlived it's usefulness and is long gone, so all of the above cases really don't happen anymore. deaths happen when the plot calls for it, and no one really dwells on it much. Batman is pretty much the exception.

Frank Miller Batman goes out of his way to cripple crims.
Frank Miller Batman is also one of the worst versions of Batman.

But yeah, not exactly a new thing from batman.

EDIT: For those of you know don't know the context, he cripples him with that kick purposefully. Batman says in the next panel after the rookie cop crawls up batman's ass about it that "he's young yet, he may still walk again". Yeah.

Wolverine cut off Sabretooth's head in 2003. Took his magical, healing factor negating, meteorite metal katana in hand and lopped it right off. Put the mad dog down.

It's nearly 2014, and you know who's still killing innocent people and making Wolverine's life hell? Sabretooth.

Why? Because especially in comic books, you can't keep a good villain down. Lethal or non-lethal means, it doesn't matter. The implementation of and the fallout from might make for an interesting story or two for the hero, but capital or extreme forms of punishment are never going to stick with villains like Joker/Sabretooth/Green Goblin/Darkseid/Paste-Pot Pete because one, two, five, ten years down the road another writer is going to want to use that character in his story.

how did tooth come back from that?

While not a comic character (at least not at first), Doc Savage would send captured villains to a medical clinic to be brainswashed as opposed to killing them.

OTOH, a lot of times his cohorts would "accidentally" kill the main villain, and say "Ooops" and they'd they'd all laugh about it.

I like '89 Batman. He didn't go out of his way to kill criminals necessarily, but if you tried to kill him, well then to hell with you.

Batman has crippled countless bad guys (usually mooks) and put super criminals in the hospital for months or years at a time, but this being comics any significant character usually gets better
unless you are Bullseye.
I guess DC criminals have access to some truly talented physicians.

I keep saying this in every Batman thread. If he can kick a tree in half in Year One, that means that every time he kicks a criminal in the head it's a severe case of brain damage.

It was a hollow tree and he has a lot of self-control when fighting and most-likely holds back when he has to. Marvel No-Prize!

He cripples the mutant leader on purpose and has a cool line about crippling when he does it.

No, he doesn't. He breaks his leg and says, "Something tells me to stop with the leg. I don't listen to it." Let me find it.

Edit: Look at the way he's holding his leg. Most likely broke and dislocated it.

I was waiting for that myself. Frank Miller's Batman is mental. Can't find the image but this exchange is from All Star Batman and Robin:

MOOK: Why canÂ’t I feel my hand?

THE GODDAMNED BATMAN: ItÂ’s called a compound fracture, rapist. ItÂ’ll never heal. Not right it wonÂ’t. Not nearly right. YouÂ’ll remember me every time the air goes wet and cold. Arthritis, punk. ItÂ’ll hurt like Hell.

Urgh. All Star Batman and Robin had horrible characterization for pretty much everyone who appeared in it, especially Wonder Woman. It also had a hilarious moment where Miller obviously didn't do his research and had Batman throwing THERMITE at bad guys.

Pretty sure it's from Year One, if I recall right Batman swoops down and smashes into the guys spine and gives no craps.

Rather liked that, in a city like Gotham Batman isn't going to be going easy on people. This isn't Batman 66.

Villains like the heroes magically heal to perfect fighting conditions.

It's not real life where a simple injury playing sports will hinder you for life. In comics, you just get better

Pretty damned positive this is from The Dark Knight Returns. :)
