Batman: The Killing Joke first official trailer

Will be the best DCAU movie in years but the animation is also the shittiest (among a lineup of rapidly declining quality). yikes.

excited to watch it but damn it's ugly.

Kevin Conroy is Batman for me but it kinda seems like he's phoning it in for this. Hamill is still great though. Not a fan of how flat the art and animation looks either. :/
Yeah, I love Conroy, but his speech at the beginning of the trailer is so bad. It's such an iconic piece of dialogue, and he completely ruins it by going too fast. Needed much more pause and feeling. Not like it's being read off a paper. As for Hamill, he's always going to be the best Joker to me.

And good lord the animation looks like shit. How the fuck could they cheap out with such an ugly and lazy looking art style for what is widely considered one of the greatest Batman stories ever? Even the Animated Series art style would have been a better fit, and that was from over 20 years ago. They could do so much better than this.

Oh gosh, a single still photo out of an entire one hour movie - heavens!

If the snark isn't an adequate response, maybe explain to the non-animators out there why your still shot is so horrible.

Because his shoulders look weird as shit or his posture is insane, and he looks like an old dude cosplaying as Nicholson Joker with stuff he found at home.

It doesn't have to be that picture to show why it looks terrible, you can pretty much break this video down frame by frame and the majority of it will look like complete crap. The animation itself also looks very choppy and amateurish, with some parts looking like they were done cheaply in flash.

The point is, the show from nearly 30 years ago that is the reason why we have the now iconic voices of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in an adaptation of such a significant story has a better art style and higher quality animation.

That animation is almost old spiderman cartoon grade. Incredible.

DTVs are low budget, an R-rated animated DTV has an even lower budget.
News at 11.

Still how much of a hit it took is crazy.

..but it's freaking Killing Joke, one of the most critically acclaimed and well-known Batman stories ever told.

And yet the artstyle and animations look like 10% of, say, Batman Bad Blood, for example.

The Dark Knight Returns released four years ago and looks lightyears better than this.

The drop in animation quality is amazing considering recent releases had decent to good animation. Batman Bad Blood and Teen Titans vs Justice League.

They also have a video trying to explain the art style I just laugh during it. They wanted it to look somewhat like the comic and failed miserably.

I was interested until I saw the trailer (having doubts before from the stills but hoping it would look better when animated). I'm not sure if that's a work in progress or something and the final version will animate and look better, but... Of all the DC animated movies I have seen (I'm only missing the superman and young justice / teen titans / whatever), this looks like the worst, specially after how amazing some of the previous productions have been

Out of all that the Joker is kind of okay in terms of animation. The rest, yuck. Especially that walk in the beginning.

Why does anime look so amazing yet these western baka animations keep looking bad?
notsrs

One of their most popular stories, fans have been wanting an animated adaption for decades, and they decide to go with this terrible animation.... sigh... animation is dead, bury it.

If they can't even muster half a shit for this they will never recover from the hole they are in.

Thats the point im saying,

WB expects all these to generally about the same.
They are already on shoestring budgets and only really get made because they have a niche fanbase that will typically buy all or most of them without question.
Also because WB has a fully staffed animation division which never runs near max capacity these days.
Finally they have contracts and agreements with the foreign art production companies.

WB is probably expecting to take a huge hit from the general audience that pick these up, and likely expect it to do well with the Batman DTV crowd which has been around 20 years.

Dark Knight Returns is also considered one of the best Batman stories and that still only did about the same as the others.

Did WB fund this with the spare change found in Kevin Tsujihara's pocket or something? How do you take one of the most beloved Batman stories and give it an animation quality straight out of an internet flash parody!?

Also, I love Conroy's old depictions as much as anyone. This dude is washed the fuck up.

Stale delivery in this trailer. Sounds almost worse than the Arkham games.

forreal. he needs to GTF OUTTA HERE.

yes animated series attachment and all that but he can't keep getting away with his terrible ass delivery anymore. dude's so washed up.

The niche fanbase will buy it regardless and it's rated r. The lower budget isn't surprising.

Are there specific movies I should watch before this, like direct prequels? Or is this a standalone movie?
It's standalone. And even if there were prequels they wouldn't exist yet because prequels are sequels that take place before the film they are a sequel to.
