Battle Chasers: Nightwar Review Thread

Since a good amount of reviews are hitting and I didn't see a thread, here we go! It's out tomorrow on October 3, 2017 for XB1/PC/PS4 - a Switch release is coming but it has been delayed with no new release date

Opencritic:

Metacritic:

Some reviews:

Dualshockers (8.5)
https://www.dualshockers.com/battle-chasers-nightwar-review-ps4-pc-switch-xbox-one/

"Through hours of RPG combat and dungeon exploring, the game manages to stay interesting and fresh, which makes it difficult to put down."

Game Informer (7.75)
http://www.gameinformer.com/games/b...le-chasers-nightwar-game-informer-review.aspx

"The balancing problems create an uneven play experience, which is disappointing considering the good things this stylish RPG has to offer. Airship Syndicate's gorgeous art design and fluid animations are a wonder to watch, and Nightwar's overcharge ability system offers a layer of strategy that is often missing from turn-based RPGs."

Playstation Lifestyle (7.5)
http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/10/02/battle-chasers-nightwar-review-headline-ps4/#/slide/1

"While not without its fair share of problems and technical issues, Battle Chasers: Nightwar still manages to provide plenty of tense battles that challenge players."

There are some higher and lower, but I picked a few from the middle in terms of scores. It looks really good!

Reviews seem good. I hope they announce the Switch release date soon since that's the version I'd like to get. Hopefully the performance holds up there.

82 on open critic. Not bad. This is one I’ve had my eye on for quite some time.

I’ll probbly still check it out when it comes to switch.
(I’m worried about the technical issues tho. If there were issues on PS4, how will the switch version fare??)

Is there a general sense for how long the game is?

from the other thread

I didn't 100% it and had 42 hours in.

also a dev quote

We originally targetted 15 hours for core path, but it ended up closer to 30. 50+ if you 100% the game, and there's a NG+. So hopefully you'll feel you got your bucks worth.

and also from the other thread, another review, courtesy of gadgets360

If you can stomach its technical imperfections, the addictive loop of combat and exploration combined with a great roster of characters, and excellent production values make Battle Chasers: Nightwar well worth checking out. It might not be the biggest release of October but it's definitely one of the most enjoyable yet.

30hs!? damn! that's a huge plus (potentially), I was expecting those 15 initial hs.

I finished Hob last night so I'm eager for another adventure (and I won't buy other games til November so, perfect timing).

So what are the technical problems specifically?

Performance in the beta was... not great on a decently powerful PC (i5, 970), I'd imagine the PS4 version has a bit of stutter.

(Mind you, I loved the shit out of the beta and am 100% glad I backed this game)

So if they can get that sorted out it’ll be an awesome game? I’m in.

So what are the technical problems specifically?

Ps4 has random stuttering in battles sometimes and odd loading. Sometimes its quick and on rare occasions long. Had a few crashes too. Still totally worth it!

Also outside dungeons there is other locations that are semi explorable, fishing, and arena where you earn points to spend at their shop, other side quest elements. You can also replay dungeons at hard difficulty for better rewards.

So what are the technical problems specifically?

From some of the folks on here. Long load times when you first start playing along with some minor glitches. Also one person on the other thread was having severe crashing issues. There is supposed to be a day one patch so some of those may be improved. Except for the loading that seems to be part of the engine and gets better the longer you play.

Looks great but there's so much to play right now I'll wait for the Switch version. Seems like it'd work well portable.

Thanks for the replies! I can deal with long load times. That’s not a problem at all. Stuttering is no biggie in a turn based game.

Crashes tho. If it affects progress, that could be a problem. Hope they get it sorted out.

I read a review that said it wasn't a big problem because the game autosaves quite often.

Karak's Review

He speaks pretty good about the game despite not giving it the best "score", I appreciate that his criticism is not focused on technical issues but he does mention those.

Everything is set!

I take it backets are gonna get a separate key for the full gmae?
Urgh wont be able to start it til weeks from now due to backlog but glad it has positive teviews

Backed for the Switch version. Hoping the technical issues don't drag it down too hard especially considering all the issues they've had getting that running well.

My review isn't live yet as I was traveling from SF, but the game is great. PS4 will have a day one patch, but the tech issues are mostly tied to random long loads. Initial load is lengthy, but the majority of fight encounters only take a couple seconds, but I've had random ones that can be close to 30 seconds. Not sure if it's tied to a new asset that needs to load or something else.

how many metaphors can one person include in a review? apparently all the metaphors in the world, in every sentence.

sorry, for some reason is really bothered me. Good review otherwise I guess.

It ran fine on Switch at one of the big press events. The problem is Unity sucks ass and put out a shoddy update.

I backed it for Switch too. The nice thing is I believe they are going to give Switch backers (who opted for physical, I think) a digital copy on another platform as apology for the delay.

Damn it! Well, gives me more time with Xenoverse, Splatoon, Steamworld and Golf Story. Hopefully it's here before Mario Odyssey.

Well ran into a side quest stopping bug. A segment starts. Noises happen and then nothing. Characters won't move. Enemy won't show up and all you can do is pause and quit.

Tempted to buy it, becaue it's only 25€ physical. But all those technical problems would bother me. Guess I'll wat till they sort them out.

Definitely picking this up on the NS when it's released. Gonna be some time until then, but I think I'll get the game digitally since I like having RPGs on my system like that and I doubt anyone else in my family will want to play it. The only thing I'm not too hot about so far is the fact that enemies seem like damage sponges.

Just finish reading the gamespot review, 6/10, the unbalanced difficulty and loot system seem real . This is not the first time i saw a review mention that.

In my 10-15 hours with the game, neither of these things were much of an issue. The third dungeon has one enemy type that's a big spike, but it's made pretty clear that it's a miniboss-type enemy. I think the review's comments on loot point to the heart of the reviewer's issues: they have the wrong approach to the combat/equipment systems.

The purpose of the stat tradeoffs with equipment is to promote specialization with your party members. It isn't a Final Fantasy game where you want to have all your gear comparison arrows green and pointing up every time you consider a piece of equipment -- you're supposed to have a role in mind for each of your characters and gear them accordingly. For instance, the basic party that everyone's going to (should) default to is Gully as a tank, Garrison as DPS, and Calibretto as support. With Gully tanking, you can eschew any damage stat as you spend battles taunting and debuffing. On the other hand, Garrison can forego defense to a ridiculous degree because few things out of full party AOE will hit him as long as Gully stays alive.

If you don't recognize that and you're holding out for gear that only makes every stat go up and trying to make everyone a standard jack-of-all-trades, then yeah, you're going to have a bad time. But if you put tank gear on your tank, damage gear on your damage dealer, and support gear on your support, those problems he cited in the review cease to exist.
