Battle Chasers: Nightwar Review Thread

Can't wait to play! My first kickstarter to boot. I was timid to play too much of the beta because I wasn't sure if my save would carry over. I knew I would love this game within the first ten minutes of playing. Need full version now!

im not saying the gamespot review is or sint wrong, but I smiled when the dude mentions "stacking debuffs is the best way to win"

God forbid a jrpg style game finally makes use of your debuff type stuff, instead of the usual "just use your big damage spell over and over again" heh

In my 10-15 hours with the game, neither of these things were much of an issue. The third dungeon has one enemy type that's a big spike, but it's made pretty clear that it's a miniboss-type enemy. I think the review's comments on loot point to the heart of the reviewer's issues: they have the wrong approach to the combat/equipment systems.

The purpose of the stat tradeoffs with equipment is to promote specialization with your party members. It isn't a Final Fantasy game where you want to have all your gear comparison arrows green and pointing up every time you consider a piece of equipment -- you're supposed to have a role in mind for each of your characters and gear them accordingly. For instance, the basic party that everyone's going to (should) default to is Gully as a tank, Garrison as DPS, and Calibretto as support. With Gully tanking, you can eschew any damage stat as you spend battles taunting and debuffing. On the other hand, Garrison can forego defense to a ridiculous degree because few things out of full party AOE will hit him as long as Gully stays alive.

If you don't recognize that and you're holding out for gear that only makes every stat go up and trying to make everyone a standard jack-of-all-trades, then yeah, you're going to have a bad time. But if you put tank gear on your tank, damage gear on your damage dealer, and support gear on your support, those problems he cited in the review cease to exist.

Thank to clear thing up, actually i'm really please with that answer ! I'm fine with a challenging turn based RPG, last time it was CSH, i think i'll get it tomorrow !

Edit : Saw a french that show like the first hour and half , he played dungeon on heroic (normal difficulty i think), this look really fun.

I only found out about this game when I played a Demo at PAX, and it was wonderful! Looking forward to adding this to the stack of games I'm currently playing right now. Damn you October!!! (shakes fist)

Hmmm, that doesn't sound all that good to me. I may reconsider picking this game up. I want a clear upgrade on gear and don't want to be messing around with gimping other characters. Just from what I've seen in play-throughs and demos, all of your characters will get hit. Especially with enemies taking many turns to actually dispatch.

Yeah, there's a hub town, at least a few extra towns beyond that, a coliseum, and a bunch of other overworld sidequests.

There's a coliseum!?

SOLD.

I fuckin love coliseums.

ACG's review gave it a "wait for sale" rating. Kinda bummed me out. It looks good, but overall impressions leave me feeling like it's a game I can wait to play until I'm done with Divinity OS2.

Im a little surprised because he's the guy i go to when i buy something 😂,
He even recommended fate extella and i found that game to be utter shite.
Also sad to see he not care much for the visuals and animations. Those floored me.

He's exaggerating but the 6/10 review is blatantly wrong and clearly written by a bad player. This game requires strategy. You can't ignore defense on Garrison. You just don't need it quite as much. Armor and weapons are easy, obvious upgrades. It's rings and trinkets where you specialize. It's a good system.

Bugs and poor 3/4ths to end game feeling.
Also I never said I didn't care for the visuals nor the animations and in fact went out of my way to laud the animations and their respite before action and even said I would have loved more of them including good hurt stances. So perhaps you got my review mixed up with someone elses.

But if you want it then go forth and buy you may love it. I think folks see a Wait for Sale as some dastardly rating that means utter ruination lol. It just means it has enough issues that it didn't feel worth the cost I paid,

Yeah, I watched the review in full and definitely remember that you said the animations in particular were noteworthy, but that the start style was just "good." But the issues you laid out in your review also seemed concerning to me, particular with not being able to level the party members you don't take with you and the inconvenience of not being able to upgrade their gear either.

In this case, the "wait for sale" rating seems apt but it's also disappointing for me as I backed this game and really wanted it to turn out great. So hopefully they can fix some things before I inevitably play it.

Man, the difficulty spiked when you reach Junk town, went in Heroic and got destroyed by fire affliction and iron golems doing over 200 damage.

Then I went back to town and did a slime sewer mission to get some experience but that final boss has about 2000 HP and does around 300-400 damage and poison affliction.

I watched the review before buying the game and Immediately bought it because you said everything I expected and was sure it was a game fitting for me.
I'm still playing and it's great, I do agree with your review tho but I don't need or expect to buy games that are straight aces everytime so, I find my experience really enjoyable so far. Plus, the latest patch is great and I haven't had anymore crashes since I updated it.
