Battle.net name (and related services) being changed to Blizzard ______

Over time, though, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having two separate identities under which everything falls—Blizzard and Battle.net.

Who could ever be so confused by this to the point that it hurts your company in any meaningful way?

Blizzard Tech sounds like garbageeee

Blizzard Tech sounds like one of those shady colleges advertised on late night tv that will be in the news in a years time as they are investigated for misconduct.

They're not actually calling it "Blizzard Tech". Note the capitalization. It'll probably just be various bits and pieces of technology branded under "Blizzard [x]". Blizzard Voice, Blizzard Streaming, etc. They'll have to rebrand a few specific things such as the client ("Blizzard Hub"?), account name ("Blizzard Account"?), etc.

Again, not called Blizzard Tech.

It's not being called "Blizzard Tech" lol (IE Battle.net Launcher is now Blizzard Launcher, not Blizzard Tech Launcher)

Bad capitalization in the OP title.

I guess if you shorten it, BlizzTech rolls off the tongue alright. BlizzNet would have been good too...I prefer Battle.net overall though but I can understand the need to coordinate with all the other services they're introducing.

Dang Battle.net was like the oldest shit still around. I wonder if bungie.net is still around.
Still is. Obviously all Destiny oriented now so none of the Halo stuff is on there anymore.

Dunno if that stuff got consolidated into whatever stats site 343 is running. Also hope this just effectively means whenever they refer to Battle.net in the news and stuff it's now Blizzard Tech.

I don't even have nostalgia for Battle.net, and I think this is a change for the worst. Battlenet just rolls off the tongue in a way Blizzardtech doesn't.

Shouldn't it be Blizzard Network > Blizzard Net then?

Blizzard even sucks at writing names for their services.

Isn't blizzard net kind of implied under the post? When they refer to their voice tech, they call it blizzard voice. When they refer to their network, wouldn't they refer to it as blizzard net or blizzard network?

edit:
Maybe I am wrong, it is a little confusing.

But battle.net is such a classic name! They have been using it since what, WC2? They can't just change the best name of an online service!

As someone who works in naming, I understand the reasoning behind the name change: an online network for your games isn't so special an idea in 2016 that it needs its own separate brand, and it makes sense to bring it under the umbrella of the mother brand. It's true.

At the same time, if "Blizzard tech" is all you can come up with, you're really removing all the history and geek cred behind the service and replacing it with, well, nothing. A big empty, meaningless, descriptive name with nothing clever, original or legitimate about it.

I mean we're talking about a company that was at the forefront of online gaming back in the 90s and had their service run incredibly well on one. freaking. computer.

Why didn't they just name it "Blizzard Battle.net" then? Sure, it's long, but people would just keep calling it Battle.net and you'd make it clear that Battle.net is a Blizzard "product". People would shorten it to BBnet or something. Heck, even "Blizznet" would be better. It keeps the same construction as Battlenet and the same shortened form, so there's still a sense of legacy behind it.

Look at Steam, GOG, or even Origin: whatever you think of those respective platforms, their names all conjure up concepts, universes or promises. They all make a statement or at least try to have an identity, be it "we're a hard-working factory" or "let's blow off some steam" or "you love the classics, and so do we" or... Well, I don't have anything for Origin lol.

What does Blizzard tech say? Nothing. It doesn't even sound good in an everyday scenario. "I'll hit you up on Blizzard Tech and we'll play". Garbage.

It's a name without a legacy and without a future. "Blizzard tech" is the kind of name an unambitious company who's too afraid of having an identity, too afraid of change, and whose top dogs can't agree on a strategy come up with.

I should know, I work with companies like that all the time.

"Blizzard tech" is a horrendous name. Why not "Blizzard Network" so people could call Bliz Net or Blitz for short? This just seems really dumb of them to do.

Everyones still gonna call it Battle.net.

I still say Nintendo Wifi and PSN store even though theyre not called that anymore.

Blizzard Tech sounds so... lame.
Battlenet > blizzard tech > battle.net
Blizzard Tech sounds lame as hell.
Blizzard tech?
Battle.net sounds way better than Blizzard Tech.
Blizzard Tech sounds like garbageeee
No, really. Blizzard Tech? Ugh. Long live the king!
blizzard tech?....no that sounds stupid. bnet forever.
Blizzard tech?
Blizzard Tech doesn't sound okay at all!

"Blizzard Tech" isn't a name that's replacing instances of the name battle.net

"Blizzard" is going to be the preface to its different components.
You've already seen this recently with things like "Blizzard Streaming" and "Blizzard Voice," and more changes are on the way.

People know it's not actually gonna be called "Blizzard Tech", right? They don't have a name yet. It's just gonna be more in-line with Blizzard's branding now.

Edit: Beaten by someone much more well-spoken than I.

Should this actually go through, I'll miss asking people for their Battletag instead of "Hey, gimme your Blizzard Tech ID" to admit them to various GAF Clans.

Actually Bungie.Net still hosts Halo 1 and the Marathon Trilogy. They pulled Myth and Myth II from it ages ago.

And Halo 1 on Bungie.net is a new arrival actually, being patched in after GameSpy's servers were commandeered by it's new owners to be used for mobile garbage.

Well if its one thing Blizzard knows best it's making a change that is this universally hated.

Like is there literally anyone on the internet that likes this change that isn't trolling?

Bnet will live on in our hearts.

Unless they name it something blizzard/cold weather related.
"Blizzard Snowplow is a great service!"

"Logging to Blizzard Client"

"Logging to Battle.net"

I understand why they do the change, thay dont want to have two different identities, but its not really a real problem, just look at Valve, EA. Maybe its nostalgia but Battle.net its a great name, it will be very strange to see the battle.net client icon and read Blizzard.
