Battle.net name (and related services) being changed to Blizzard ______

This is long overdue. I was always so confused by the fact that a company could release products and services not named after themselves. It was really hard to wrap my head around. Hopefully this is a sign of more streamlining to come. When I think Blizzard, I don't want to think Battle.net, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, or Overwatch. That's just mixed messaging. I hope after the Blizzard Client is updated, we can finally launch games in a sensible manner with proper names like Blizzard Fantasy, Blizzard Space, Blizzard Looter, and Blizzard Shooter.

I think you mean Blizzard Fantasy in Space. Not to mention Blizzard Fantasy Online, Blizzard Poker, the cult-classic Blizzardthorne and, of course, the lamented Blizzard Fantasy in Space Ghost, which I still hope they'll revive one day. After this streamlining, maybe, who knows?

Battle.net is one of the originals in online gaming. Any other gaming service would kill for a name that simple and memorable. It's going on nearly twenty years! I guess if you really want to push your brand Blizzard, but it's not like you need it.

I understand why they do the change, thay dont want to have two different identities, but its not really a real problem, just look at Valve, EA.

The change in name is exactly a means for comparison to Valve and EA. Steam and Origin are distribution services that live disparately of what Valve/EA develop games-wise. Meanwhile, there's functionally no difference for battle.net to have its own naming scheme because it lives solely for Blizzard. It made sense in a time when online services were unique but they're just a standard now.

Battle.net was a stupid name anyways.

It's true!

I think their reasoning is that in the business world they believe there will be more value for their brand if they name the products after the company name. I remember that was how ibook became macbook.

Damn, love the Battle.net name - so iconic. Was my first online gaming on Starcraft (had only done LAN upto then).

Sad to see the name go. It will live on on my Warcraft 2 CD :)
