Battlefield 4 Beta Thread: Prepare 4 Battle (Update to beta drivers)

Well damn. The obliteration mode is amazing. I just nearly solo'd a run to the A flag and blew it up, and guess what... the game crashed on me.

What happens when you have people repairing the boat:

Anyone with an i5-750 and 670 or a similar setup? Running everything on Ultra with some AA and it's not smooth at all.

I assume that my CPU is the bottleneck here?

My performance issues seem to be gone.. must have been a laggy time in general is all. For anyone on the fence about Windows 8.. get it. It is so much faster than Windows 7. I already had an SSD and I even noticed a great improvement. Now to go and read up on all the neat features of it..

What happens when you have people repairing the boat:

The boat is awesome. Explosive cannon, tow launcher, two miniguns, decent speed, low profile. Most people don't know how to use it, though. They get it, then park it off a point somewhere and then think it is junk because they got blown out of the water shortly thereafter. Like everything in BF, if you stop moving for very long you're going to die.

Why are people discussing PC specs crap in here when theres a specific thread for it?

Anyway, just started playing today on 360. Good god it looks like crap haha. However for a beta it plays pretty well and I've only experienced one glitch so far. I already prefer it over bf3, but can't quit put my finger on why. Smooth controls maybe?

However what I don't like is only being able to spec my character once I've joined a game, unless I'm missing something. Took me ages to find and it's a very unintuitive layout. Hate feeling like I'm wasting time picking what my character should be equipped with instead of actually helping my team.

Tried for the first time since Patch #2 and yea, stuttering is absolutely minimal and general performance feels a lot better. Makes it so much more enjoyable.

I'm still only level 1, so I've hardly got a chance to try out much new or get many unlocks. I'll probably give it a few more whirls before it ends, but overall, I'm quite happy with how it seems to be turning out. Super hyped about having a full range of maps and Rush in just a few weeks now! :D

I have this hope, which I know won't happen, that they open up for another game-mode; defuse. I so want to try that ... It's the sole reason why I was interested in BF4.

Can someone please explain what the hell is up with the defibrillator in this game?

Does the thing even work? I kneel right over people and use it on them and SQUAT happens.

Also, what is up with the charges? Is it really 3 max? Is that all you get per life? Someone mentioned they recharge over time, but I haven't been paying attention.

The defibs only work if the defib icon is above their body. If they choose to spawn, the icon disappears and you can't bring them back.

And yes, the defib has 'ammo' which limits your ability to spam revive. The number of charges you get build up over time.

Are you sure they are revivable? You respawn rather quickly sometimes.

And you have three charges that can be used instantly, then it needs 6 seconds to recharge a new one.

I read an in game chat log where some guy was saying they have basically nerfed the defib to the point of making the assault class for the COD players..i.e the class serves no purpose anymore than if you just want to shoot people

not sure if that is accurate, but it sounds like they have really nerfed it

This is the PC thread.

No, that's the PC performance thread, where people talk about performance. this is the PC thread. There's a separate console thread. If you want to post general impressions here, you'll live with PC related stuff being posted i.e specs etc. Even has a big fat "Update to beta drivers" which seems to be a big clue that it's PC related.

This is exactly what it is. You need to "charge" it now which leaves you open to get killed far far more than it did in BF3 (played some last night to see). It's better ticket wise to let a person respawn than give up 2 tickets because you died too which happens more often than not because the time to kill is so low and the charge rate for the defib so high.

ROFL. NO. Anyone that is saying that is quite frankly an idiot and doesn't know how to play BF.

Revives are still useful. They nerfed it to prevent medic trains from overpowering the entire game structure.

The revive window in the beta is bugged, meanwhile. Demize and DICE have confirmed that.

Was playing with a friend last night and he got into our attach chopper and went toe to toe again the other teams attach chopper. He got them to bail out, so he bailed out and got in their chopper and kept it in the air. We controlled two choppers for about half the battle. Simply epic.

Think I had a game with derFeef yesterday. Saw the name but could not work out how to text chat. :D Damn I need more PC practice but the game is fun.

One decent thing I just noticed was that they've improved the ability to play with friends. 3 of us joined a server one after the other using the join friend button in battlelog. 2 of us were in the same team but different squads whereas the 3rd went into the other team. When we tried to switch into the same team there was a message there saying that autobalancing was about to happen to let us play together. After a few seconds all of us were in one team and in the same squad automatically without having to do it manually. That's pretty nice.

Still wish they'd bring back the 'join with party' option though. Would make things much easier.

Wow, I killed a bunch of people with the first unlockable shotgun and for some reason I keep getting master dogtags for every weapon in the game :/

So, after 40 hours of play i finally got the Type 88 LMG. Its so so much better than the stock one. Makes playing support bearable.

Also, met my first base raper today. Was playing Obliteration and he has camping our spawn killing our helis all game. What a tosser. We still won though.

I'm slowly falling in love with the U-100. When handled right it's a beast! The accuracy over range, its stopping power and magazine size just makes it a great all-round weapon. Really love it.

Think that's close to my setup. I got a solid 30 on all Ultra. Just under 60 on all high.

What do you mean by not smooth? Tried to use Fraps to see the frames?

Hey there, almost the same (660ti here) setup for me.

1080p runs like absolute junk. I dropped it down to 1600x900 and it's smooth as silk with the same settings. It's probably an optimization issue, but I'm upgrading my CPU soon (going with an i7-4770k with a new motherboard and more ram to boot) so that'll remove any CPU bottlenecking that may be happening. I'm no expert, but I don't think it's a CPU issue if I can crank down my resolution slightly and get a totally different experience with all the settings cranked.

HALO jumping (if we can call it that), is awesome. Even more so destroying a vehicle after deploying your chute and firing an RPG in one go.

This. :)

Was way up on a building when I saw a lone enemy carrying the bomb in an Obliteration game, towards one of our targets. I jumped down from my perch, pulled the chute at the last second. Came down probably 3 feet behind him, shot him dead, grabbed the bomb, turned around and got shot in the face by a tank.

Such a Battlefield moment right there. :)

It makes me want to play an Infinite Ammo, Rocket Launcher only mode.

It's cool though the game needs to work on the parachute mechanic a bit. I don't know about terminal velocity but I know you can negate all fall damage by opening your chute immediately before hitting the ground when jumping from the roof or second level of the mall. As long as the ripcord animation plays you are golden.

You sure? When I open my chute close to the ground, I take damage - Usually hit 75% from 100%. Obviously this is all for gameplay purpose but I've taken damage every single time I opened it too late.

From the second level of the mall to the first level I am positive. I have done it a dozen times. I'll have to double check from the roof.

Edit: Jumping from the second level without doing the chute does anywhere from 30-84 damage, depending on area, despite being the same height. Pulling your chute will negate all that damage unless it is done at the last second where it does not have enough time to do the full animation. The roof seems to be the same mechanically but will kill you without any chute at all with a last second parachute actually preventing the death. You still get really hurt, though.

And lol. While I was testing it in a empty server a person joined and was running around. I parachuted behind him by the statue and followed behind him for a minute. He kept pausing and looking around, but never behind, so I'd stay out of view. He finally spun around and tried to knife me, which I countered.

Seems like if the full chute opening animation and sound finishes and you make it to just gliding down, you'll land without damage

I finally gave in and did a clean install of Windows 8. I'm a believer in Win 8 for this beta (and game I assume). It easily gave me 10 FPS on Ultra and almost eliminated the stuttering I was experiencing. There's still some there, but I attribute it to micro-stuttering from the SLI profile, which I assume will be fixed at release.

I also turned on adaptive v-sync on the NVIDIA panel and it seemed to make the game even smoother. Getting 60 FPS now pretty consistently on everything Ultra @ 1080p, no AA (forcing my 120 HZ monitor to do 60 HZ).

Huge improvement from Windows 7 and without the adaptive v-sync. It's finally playable!
