Battlefield 4 Beta Thread: Prepare 4 Battle (Update to beta drivers)

Yikes. Finally home for the weekend and got some time to sit down with my PC for a bit. Upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, booted up the beta and...no bueno.

770 4GB, i5 2500k @ 3.3GHz, 8GB RAM and I was getting stuttering, framerate drops, you name it. Updated to Nvidia's beta drivers and was getting the same problems.

Call it a beta and wait for final release? I've been worried my rig has been struggling on things it shouldn't be lately.

That chip desperately needs to be overlocked. No reason to have a 2500k and not overclock it.
I have my 2500k @ 4.8 and the difference between that and stock is night and day.

If anybody wants some light podcast-like listening, my buddy Anthony (who is a member here) and myself sat down to record our thoughts on the Battlefield 4 beta. He's playing on Xbox 360, I'm playing on PC, and we've both spent many hours with the series.

Backed the audio with some of my own gameplay footage from PC. See how terrible I am.

Nice listen, agree with lot of things you guys say. Also nice footage!

Your 770 should be more than fine for this game. It performs pretty much the same as my 680 and I'm getting 60+ (74 fps on average according to a benchmark I did yesterday) with everything on ultra and 2xMSAA. Mine is overclocked to 1245MHz though, standard clocks for 680 is ~1000 I believe.

I also have Win 8, 8GB RAM and 2500K, but mine is at 4,6GHz.

Just listened to it while eating my breakfast, enjoyed it and the gameplay wasn't that bad. ;)

From the guy in the podcast playing on Xbox: 3.45 = "only in Battlefield 4" moment.

Is there anyone else having the problem where the game ALWAYS launches in a window / changes to a window if anything is changed in the options / loadout is changed.

IS there a fix ? It's annoying as hell.

Yeah mine does that. Don't think there's a fix, game just seems happy about windowed mode.

Their borderless mode is also always-on-top, making it worthless. I went to window and just maximized per somebody's advice here. Not exactly what I want, but at least it stays the same way.

Not sure , mine does it now too since the update.
I mean you just alt+enter but yea its kinda annoying because it didnt do it before.

I just had to change a setting to stop this.

Inside the video options menu it has a option for how the game boots up. Mine was set to windowed and i had to change it to start in full screen mode?

Would you mind sharing what you used to record the footage? MSI Afterburner does not (and will not) support 64 bit applications so I can't use that and FRAPS would hurt the already tenuous framerate situation so I'm out of ideas on how to go about it.

Well, per my own thread http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=691961 I can personally recommend Action! for this, already did quite a few recordings and it works without a single digit FPS hit. Dxtory doesn't seem to work, you can start the recording but it never really records anything.

Nothing like that on my video options , just the normal resolution plus the choice of full screen / windowed / borderless windowed.

Nothing about startup

Does anyone know how you use the Battlescreen for tablets? I've managed to connect my iPad to the game and I can switch servers from it. But I don't know how to bring up the map on the screen.

Is it disabled in the beta perhaps?

Press battlescreen on your iPad when you are in game.

On the android version the battlescreen button is offscreen in the blue bottom bar and i cannot scroll to the right to click on it.

I went to their website to buy it and saw that they're charging an extra $3 for this 'extended service'...

action_extended_services.jpg

Now obviously I don't need to redownload from their servers so I'm not going to pay for this but it got me thinking whether this means I won't get any updated versions after 2 years? Or in other words, am I paying $30 for a 2 year license to use the software?

Nice video!

120hrs in BF3 is embarrassing?

No, I think that's just some squeezer service of always being able to log in and download the exact version you bought or get your serial in an easy-to-access page. Current method of fetching your serial for example if you lost it;

"To retrieve Action! serial number please contact us at: sales@mirillis.com. Please contact us with e-mail address used during Action! purchase, this will let us to resend your serial number quickly."

But you can just download the free trial and input your serial whenever you need. You normally always have your serial unless you start deleting emails.

However the license will be valid for the entire build branch;

"Action! license is not time limited.
Action! license also entitles for free updates within purchased product version. In example, when you purchase Action! 1.x.x version then you are entitled to receive free updates for all Action! 1.x.x versions. Upgrade to version 2.x.x or higher will be not free."

Thanks. Picked up a 3 user license for $44 and shared the cost with a couple of friends.

I have tried overclocking my 2500k with little to no success, and my performance across the board has been worse than when it was at stock clocks before overclocking, even after upgrading to a 770. I'm convinced there's something wrong with it, even if I don't know what. Both BF4 and BF4 perform horribly, even on the lowest of low settings and I just don't know why.

And at this point I don't use my PC enough to justify spending the money on a new mobo/CPU.

Just a long shot but try doing a 'repair install' of the BF4 beta from the origin launcher. Right click on the game. I was dismayed upgrading to Windows 8 Pro thinking it was worse than W7, then I did that repair install.. and it runs smooth as butter at all high settings 1440p for me.

Also might want to uninstall and re-install punkbuster/update for BF4. Click PBSVC under 'here' in the first paragraph.

http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsvcfaq.php

Run that see if PB service needs to be installed/uninstalled. Then run PBSetup again from here and update the BF4 beta client/server.

This game is just so damn good. They really escalated the immersion and realism over 3. Loving the PLD. I could sit and use that an entire round. I carry a AK 5C for kills and love the C4 for suicide missions against tanks/etc. It's going to be a tough couple of weeks between beta and retail launch. I'm not sure that I can go back to 3.

Cheers for the feedback guys! I used FRAPS to record the footage, but will probably change to something else to negate the frame hit. Got a few things wrong in the video, like what exactly is locked to battlepacks, but there you go.

And yeah, 120 hours in the grand scheme of things isn't much :P.

Might as well post it here too.

Recorded a game of Domination to try out the RawCap in Dxtory. Recorded it in 1440p and the quality on Youtube is pretty nice actually, even with their damn compression. Managed to stay around 60fps for the most part while recording. I turned off MSAA and lowered effects and post process quality to high to maintain the framerate. The rest was at ultra.

It was a close game and we won with 4 tickets left.

i really hope they take that charging shit away from the defib
i get that it was crazy in bf3 but the defib is useless now. havent been revived once in 10 hours

Could invest in a PVR2? The drawback would be 1080p videos @ 30fps.

The DMR is fantastic, I'm glad BF now has a viable semi-auto weapon for all classes.

Did they patch them? Because 3 bodyshots is not that great. It should absolutely be like the semi snipers in BF3. 2 shots within a certain distance. You'll get absolutely smoked by any halfway decent player with an automatic up close. Not having a reflex sight available during the beta also sucks.

I was also experiencing no lag and great hit registry, along with higher frames before the 3 patches. The 2nd patch specifically seemed to add 20ms to everyone/every server.

That is because it's not an assault rifle an should not be used that way. Weapons should not be able to compete with each other if they are build for completely different roles. You should adjust your play style to complement the weapon. Assault rifles are for getting in the middle of the action, DMRs are for a more supporting role but you can still stick with your squad, sniper rifles for lying down on some far away building and being completely useless. :P

I liked playing with the SKS or M417 in BF3 (even with the suppression madness), it takes 2-3 shots most of the time to kill someone up close but by playing smart and tactically you can still do great. Any decent player with an AR will still win in a close up fight though.

I want to like DMRs, but I'm waiting until I unlock the MK11 before I cast my judgement. Because as it stands I fucking loathe the RFB. I don't know if it's the connection on my end, the weapon itself, the servers I'm playing, or my lack of skill, but it's accuracy is utter garbage even in the most close range entanglements. I've laughed out loud with bafflement how point blank range iron sights misses the fucking shot. I just don't care it, and at this point don't care. Lets see how the MK11 rolls.

The weapons need to be serviceable. Some were just flat out garbage in BF3 because they did nothing well and weren't even 'jack of all trades' guns. The DMRs feel the same way. I don't know why they went out of their way to buff the magazine capacity up to normal levels if they're going to be so laughably innacurate as EatChildren pointed out. I should be able to put all three shots onto the body at medium range without much effort. Something with the way they are balanced or the recoil is calculated makes them fluff even the easiest shots. Absolute garbage.

I've yet to meet a player that legitimately likes them over the other available weapons, and that's the rub. The gun has to be good enough to find an audience, and 3 bodyshots isn't getting it done. It's going to be even more laughable for weapons like the ACE and SCAR that have assault rifle equivalents to their DMR models. DICE seems to be working hard to up the differentiation between weapons, but I'm already seeing the DMRs and the Ultimax as balance weaksauce.

They got shotguns right. Carbines are pretty wicked. DMRs are noticeably lacking. I also loathe the RPM limits on these stupid guns. It should fire as fast as I can pull the trigger.

Its iron sights are terrible and stopping me from using it

i do better with the dmr having the acog scope attached but even still, its not how it should be.... i think the gun looses too much accuracy when shooting whilst moving

Yeah, the ACOG improves it a little bit (I've also got those side iron sights attached), but the consistency of landing shots is still way too confusing. I mean, when it comes down to it all I want is a sensation of logistics behind a weapon's accuracy variables and where my shots are landing. With the RFB I constantly have no fucking idea. Dude at point blank range. I stop, crouch, ACOG scope up, sight squarely at his/her body, fire...and it misses. Point blank range, side irons sights, quit double tap. First shot hits the body, second shot doesn't and there's no visual indicator of where it went or why.

I have no idea what penalties are at play, whether they're movement or recoil, but they're not satisfying to wrestle with and make every entanglement feel like half skill half throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. I guess in my head a DMR can trade off damage for mobility and rate of fire. They don't need to be mainstay weapons, but they should be useful for sitting back with your squad and letting off rounds that have a higher probability of hitting their target. At the moment the damage is so low, the mobility so bad, and the accuracy shaped so bizarrely that I'd rather just run with a sniper rifle or automatic. Or carbine.

TLDR: Fuck the RFB.
