battlefield Play4Free debut trailer.

Meh, BC2 made basic class items (med kit, ammo kit, shock paddles, etc) unlocks. That is like 25 steps backwards in my book.
Play as a Medic! Who can't heal or revive people! Awesome!

It makes people only look at the big gun and not the true usefulness of healing and revives. It was a terrible decision. Medics never healed me in that game.

Again this is nothing like what we are talking about here.

I can make a brand new BF2 account right now with zero unlocks and still do just as good as anyone else in the game no matter what they unlocked.

The same cannot be said for Battlefield: Heroes. If you don't have some of those paid weapons and you are going up against someone of semi-equal skill that does, you are fucked.

Context. I've made my position perfectly clear on this scheme: I HATE it. I was just agreeing with the post that debunked BF being negatively influenced by Modern Warfare with the unlocks. Yes, it's true it's adopted the more ridiculous aspects of MW, but it really did originate the whole concept with BF2 and doesn't have clean hands in the least.

Yeah, Call of Duty took BF2's system and made it usable by not requiring 300 hours to unlock all weapons. Thank god for that.

and the alternative was what? Making people pay for weapons that did nothing? Merely a pallete swap and some pretty glowing effects? You still have to provide a meaningful reward for the paying customer without upsetting the balance too much.
well, if people who pay expect better weapons, and people who don't expect balance, then it sounds like it's impossible to satisfy both.

You submit your e-mail address.

Which I did, only to see if they do things right over Heroes.

But I'm expecting the worse. If they monetize better items, they can count me out with the exception of the veteran status.

Sure there is, make some modes pay-for. Q0 did it, I wonder how well iD has been with that.

Fucking hate that Freeze tag is hidden behind it it's the only mode I gave two damns about in Q3A. :|

Done, thanks.

:lol You have to admire the developer calling this forum out. Either he thinks we'll be impressed, or he's cocky.

Either way, the gameplay looks decent for a free to play game. But in a SHOOTER you need balance/no-pay-for-better-shit. That's where the concern for me is. If it's BF2 but you get shitty base weapons and have to pay daily/weekly/monthly for the better shit, they can count me out.

I would love to be worrying over non-issue.

but DICE said that by having them be unlocks, people would notice the 'unlock' pop-up and see they have something new and then use it!

I just find it funny how GAF is called out by nearly every developer when the forum starts bitching about changes. It's really amusing.

SELECT SELECT SELECT BACK BACK BACK Q Q Q

"I NEED A MEDIC PACK! I NEED A MEDIC PACK! I NEED A MEDIC PACK!"

(Medic runs off)

EnemyAttacker <PKM> Mediccdouche

...

Yeah, how well did that work out for you, DICE?

AMMO!

AMMO!

I NEED AMMO!

CAN I GET SOME AMMO!

AMMO PLEASE!!!

PLEASE!!!!!

You would almost think Bad Company 2 is "Call of Lonewolves: Bad Teammates" given how the majority of the playerbase doesn't seem to know about the class items EVEN IF THEY UNLOCKED THEM!

Honestly I blame that more on idiot Call of Duty people not understanding the whole "support" and "teamwork" thing than anything.

Sort of want.

Not sure how a F2P FPS would work. I played Heroes for about a month and bailed out because I found it very boring. It may have gotten better.

For medic, they should have you start with med kit/shock paddles only and force you to level that for a while before giving you a gun. I mean, I hardly touched my gun in BF2 Karkand matches as medic and I topped the board consistently.

Diablohead said:
Make it too detailed and you lose a lot of potential players who are on older gaming rigs.

Nah. It can scale like other f2p games.

I feel they are making this as a lesser bridge to a true BF3.

When people write about "catasrophe BFBC2 post-support" I want to claw out somebody's eye.

It's actually gotten worse.

Holy crap ToxicAdam, you`re nuts.

MMO schemes do not work in shooters. The whole mmo leveling, improved gear mechanic is based around a compelling and entertaining PvE experience. If the game is centered around PvP (or it`s the only fun part), adding a leveling or gear grind is simply putting a barrier between the player and the fun. And it creates an incredibly negative experience for new players that come along as time goes on. I mean people have a hard enough time dealing with seasoned players who name the game inside and out, hand those people a perk that does 25% more damage, or a better gun with sights on it etc. and they will take donging on newbs to a whole new level. And then all of the sudden for some reason multiplayer communities don`t have the staying power they used to.

I can`t believe everyone copied this from COD4 (arguable) and they missed the most important part. COD4 unlocked the most powerful stuff right at the beginning. Le sigh.

Leveling for character customization stuff is cool though.

Fuck after seeing how much cash Valve is making from TF2 hats you could probably easily make a game that is about mostly cosmetics and have the stuff sell as long as the base game is super good like TF2.

The killstreak perks also decrease the need for unreliable things like teamwork.

Uh, I can play *this* Karkand already in BF2. I highly doubt this version is anything beyond a carbon copy. Now if it was added to BC2 with destruction...

but you can't play it with the Newly Redesigned(TM) BC2 classes!

Be interesting to see how this turns out. Beta tested Heroes and still play it time to time. Love me some airplane combat in heroes

The achievements in Play4Free WILL unlock stuff in BF3.

So there's a half-reason to torture yourself, achievements + BF3 unlocks.

Unless you mean Veteran...

I am reminded of a balance issue that Battlefield 2 actually did popularize or create. Vanilla had the weapons unlocked with ranks, but in a player choosen order to alleviate some stress. When special forces was released the special forces players could take those weapons, including flash bangs(no analog in vanilla) into regular BF2 servers potentially playing players without access to those items.

But you cannot play the new one with a G36c!

"We've made the play area quite a bit smaller, and we've got a very different kind of layout," says Salt.

"It looks like Battlefield 2 at first, but buildings and tactical spots have been moved around. There's still a lot of room, though. A lot of modern FPS games go for the really tight spaces, so it's been refreshing to open things out again."

Not sure what to make of that. The 32 player version wasn't particularly big or open really. And now it's "quite a bit smaller".

Anyway, Karkhand will be different somehow. Also it has a new-ish game mode. Sounds like you have to stick around and defend the flag you just captured for a while before it starts earning you points. Not sure what to think of that either.

So I guess there will be some reason to check it out even if you've played BF2 to death.

...and if the series' core fans needed any encouragement, the fact that achievements in Free 4 Play will unlock content in the imminent Battlefield 3 will surely be all the incentive they need.
