Been a GAFfer for a year, a retrospective

So it's official, I've been a member here for a year. That's probably the most I've ever been active on a forum. Before joining GAF, I was like a ronin of forums, roaming from one to another for a month or two. Splinter Cell, The Last of Us, State of Decay, Far Cry 3, I was active in those forums and then haven't been back in a while. I barely frequent Gamefaqs anymore, only if I need a quick answer to a question. Technically I've been part of IGN forums since 2009, but I barely post there anyway.

I had been hesitant to join NeoGAF, since I had always heard bad things about the community. Now I know that those stupid comments I had seen quoted by devs or in articles only represent that idiotic vocal minority. The truth is that GAF really is the best community on the web, or least of any I've been a part of. The fact that there's a topic for anything, anything is fair game from the latest game or newest show to that breaking news story to some weirdly specific OT, really makes it far more appealing and encompassing than any other forum. What other forum can I go from debating the merits of The Walking Dead to discussing the latest indies to questioning the authenticity of Morgan Freeman's iPad-drawn face? And the community here has proven to be the coolest, most generous, and most friendly I've ever encountered, and that's not even considering GAF's fantastic treasure trove of talent amongst its game dev community, journalists, and others. And compared to many other forums I've posted in (cough Gamefaqs cough), the folks here can actually sustain grammatically-correct, reasonable, logical discussions (for the most part, anyway).

Technically I spent the first few months lurking around and perusing various threads. I made my 300 posts to member in The Last of Us review thread (actually I think I was the top poster in that thread) and since then, I've been most active in Toma's Indie Threads and the Steam Threads (which move way too fast to have a good discussion btw). It was a pleasure to experience my first Steam Summer Sale with the community here and remains a pleasure to follow my favorite shows week to week in their wonderful OTs. Honestly NeoGAF feels more like a community than other forums I've been a part of, rather than just a simple message board. It's nice to see familiar names pop in various threads so often, which is something I don't see often on Reddit, Gamefaqs, and other forums

So yeah, I'll be here for the long run. And to Toma, to Grief, to a bunch of others in the Steam and Indie Threads, thanks for all your help when I was just a PC gaming neophyte a few months ago and for maintaining those great communities in those respective threads.

Oh, and a shout-out to GAF's GIF master as well:

Sums up NeoGAF better than any written description ever could

Posted here, rather than off-topic since I pretty much only mention gaming here and GAFfers active in gaming threads, but if a mod feels this belongs in off-topic, feel free to move it

Like you, it's the variety of the topics of discussion that I really like about this forum and that you can participate in a conversation about practically anything you're interested in, or initiate one.

That's one long gif. Rock solid though.

I've heard people complain about the strict moderation at gaf compared to other forums before, but I sorta like the fact that GAF doesn't let creepers go wild.

I'm a little over a year old here on GAF myself and absolutely agree with what you said.

my heart belongs to steamgaf but the rest of you are alright too.

I'm closing in on the year mark and this is probably the only forum I haven't just lurked in. It's the community here that's the best out of pretty much any active forum without a lot of the bs and shit posts you get on other forums.

It's been a good year.

Thanks for sharing! It was a nice retrospective. I lurked GAF for years before getting the courage to sign up, and then I had no courage to add posts so lurked some more.

It really is the best community. You should have been here for the turnover of last gen though and the Wii reveal and all of that.
Some glorious moments. GAF feels larger now than it was then and there's no way to keep up with as many conversations now.

I'm glad that Pachters noob-rush plan backfired on him and we got a lot of great forum members out of it instead.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about grammatically correct posters taking up residence here though;

How many "had to of" "should of" or "could of"s have you seen posted in this place? It's an inter-web madness, I tell you!

Similar with me. I think i registered around autumn last year some weeks before the WiiU launch. At that time I was rather tired of videogames. But the imminent WiiU launch led to my registration on neogaf. The enthousiastic people here on neogaf really let my interest in videogames rise again and I think with this community I enjoy playing games more than ever.

I'd been lurking for a year or two after a recommendation from one of my two best friends, signed up recently to offer my (admittedly useless, uninformed) viewpoints, and I graduated out of junior status a few weeks ago. While I do sometimes miss blog-style navigation, I can never go back to anything else. Gaf4eva.

Gaf is the cleanest looking forum with the most users I feel. Its also where all the gaming news/rumours hits first. Its why I always come to Gaf first before anywhere else for opinions on the latest games.

A quick check of the IGN/GT/Gamespot/Reddit forums and you will see a huge mess of stickied topics and awful layout (GT/Reddit biggest offenders).

I still have a screengrab somewhere, of when I was the newest joined member.

I can honestly say that some of the events that happened during my first year here had a major impact on my personal life and to this day affect how I interact with people.

This thread has made me realise i've been here for 3 and a half years and I've only created about 20 threads. I think the reason is that Im often too scared to make threads on here!

Definiely my favourite gaming related forum though, don't use so called gaming websites anymore, just GAF.

I've been registered here for over a year but only really active regularly for the past eight months or so. As a former IGN and Gamespot user this place is an improvement in nearly every way. In particular I've been loving the diminished importance of post counts and registration dates, lack of like counts, strong and varied communities, clean layout, quick posting of all important news (sometimes I check other sites and they can be hours behind GAF), and consistent moderation. I think the relatively lengthy registration process and the fact that junior members can't post threads is a great way to stop the spamming that occurs in other forums; something IGN especially could learn from. Wish I had registered here sooner.

Since joining Gaf, I've been in the gaming news twice, quoted by CVG, had my gif appear in a documentary, and been banned three times for questionable reasons.

I love it :D

Happy GAFiversary. I have a lot of issues with the Gaming side of GAF (I think the mods deserve medals for having to trawl through some of the drivel posted on this place) but by a huge margin it is the best site to get the latest game-related news and that is more than enough for me.

Been posting here since idk when. Good forum, but some opinions make me angry...
Love the discussions about latest news and games, always a place to read good stuff.

Ha, nice

Been banned once so far. You're not a true GAFfer till you've been banned for questionable reasons.

I've been a member for only a few months, and I can already say unequivocally that GAF may as well be the centre of the gaming universe. The news breaks here first, the opinions on games are most trustworthy here only, and the discussion is lively and proud.

There are still a lot of annoying people but that comes with how large the user base is.

Overall it's alright here. Definitely better then other forums I've been a part of.

Nice topic. Great GIF. I agree with your overall sentiment. From my limited experience, this is a great community.

Oh wow, that's wierd, just found out I'm a member and no longer a junior. I've enjoyed lurking and finally joining GAF several months back. The only downside is that even with the restriction on membership, you can easily find many who are too ultra defensive or only able to see one side of a conversation and feel compelled to be as aggressive as possible.

At the same time this also leads to some of the great debates and humour of GAF that I wouldn't change for anything. Heres to another good and happy year for you and everyone else on GAF!

I'd love hear some feedback from people who are here since 5+ years

been around since 2000 (when we were gaming-age.com), though had a couple of breaks away. Not posting as much as i used to, peak was around 2005-2006.

Used to do the GAFCast back in the day - feels like forever ago.

Been here almost two years. Either I'm a dick and hate it when people try to discuss things with me, or I attract the people that love to tell me that what I like is dumb and I should feel dumb.

I like to think it is a mix of both.
