Good thread.

Got introduced to Pink Floyd by my dad when I was like 13 with DSotM, big fan since. I think Atom heart mother is a bit unappreciated imo even though it's a bit wacky with the whole choir thing, it ain't as good as Meddle, Animals etc but still really nice.

Atom Heart Mother

I really like this album too. Listening to it right now after being motivated by this thread. Pink Floyd is probably my favourite band of all-time.

I adore Pink Floyd. Something about them just jives really well with me... my musical tastes are quite eclectic and I like pretty much everything, but as far as the enjoyment I get out of music, nothing even comes remotely close to Pink Floyd.

They seem to have this effect on quite a few people, I often wonder what exactly about them makes them so special.

Favourite albums are WYWH > DSotM > Meddle > Animals > The Wall... just going through that I can't believe how much amazing music there is there, in that many albums, and I haven't even touched upon the Dave Gilmour-era Pink Floyd. So ridiculously good.

Dogs is Pink Floyd's best song.

I can't decide between Dogs or Echoes for individual best song... or Time. Or Shine on.... FUCK.

The solo one time made me tear up. It was when I was all hormony and and emotional as a teenager, but still...

Have to confess to tearing up on this song a few times too =)

I appreciate Animals for what it is but I don't enjoy it all that much. I'm a bigger fan of Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Meddle, and The Wall.

My favorite solo by Gilmour is in "Time" followed by a close second with the solo in "Comfortably Numb".

Best lyrics has to go to The Wall. So much depth to Roger Waters' lyrics in all the songs. It does get to be a tiring album from start to finish. I did find myself coming back to it a lot for some reason last year. Now Meddle and Dark Side of The Moon have been getting more playtime from me in 2012. I've also started listening to A Momentary Lapse of reason, too. I love "Learning To Fly".

I only just decided to give Pink Floyd a chance last year, and out of the albums I've got Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon are the two I keep returning to over and over. Meddle is really underrated, Echoes is such an amazing piece of music and I absolutely adore Fearless;

No mention of "One of These Days"?! This is almost blasphemy...

OP, give a listen to the 1st track of Pulse...

I like that version of Crazy Diamond more than I do the album version.

PS- Wish You Were Here is their best, as many have echoed.

Their best stuff:

Live at Pompeii
Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here

The Waters stuff is mostly depressing and boring.

I agree. The Wall works great, because it's filled with emotion and is a nice synergy between Waters' feelings and Gilmour's playing. But The Final Cut is just dark and depressing.

I go back and forth between Animals and Wish You Were Here as my favorite. Pink Floyd itself is still one of my top bands, though they're not number 1. Actually, with my recent King Crimson obsession I may some day have to admit that KC is actually the better 70s prog band. I'm not quite sure I'm 100% there yet, but it's close.

Have you guys heard this version of Wish You Were Here from the experience edition? I kind of wish this was on the album instead.

Also, I'm one of the fans that really loves The Division Bell, and doesn't mind what Gilmour did to the band after Waters left. I also love Waters' solo stuff a ton. It's not quite as good as the top PF albums, but it is pretty great.

Favorite song is definitely High Hopes.

This was the first Pink Floyd album I ever heard, and the one that made me fall in love with them. I still go back to it regularly, and am constantly transported into another realm with Gilmour's guitar work.

"When we listen to David Gilmour play his guitar, he takes us on an expense-paid adventure across the massive landscapes of our minds."

A comment by someone on this video:

On An Island - David Gilmour

On An Island is the only solo album I have of any PF member. It's quite good, I actually listened to it on my way to work during the past two days. My work starts early, listening to On An Island at dawn is perfect.

Hey you
Out there beyond the wall
Breaking bottles in the hall
Can you help me?

Hey you
Don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall

This part always gives me goosebumps.

Could never get into The Division Bell. It didn't have the same bittersweet feel the past Floyd albums had. I should give it another go though, its been years since I attempted to listen too. Absolutely love 'Marooned' though.

Not a huge fan of The Division Bell either, but I love High Hopes. What an amazing song. Every new listen is like small journey.

Everything was better on Live at Pompeii rather than the corresponding studio versions. I'm not completely convinced that is entirely live anyway, their other live versions of those songs aren't nearly as good, like on Ummagumma. Maybe it was live with heavy overdubs?
