Ben Carson admits fabricating West Point scholarship

Or by scholarship he meant he had someone willing to nominate him.

In any case, he never applied and never claimed to, so it's irrelevant.

No, that is not what it means by any definition or circumstance. That is not something that can be confused. The only way you can possibly have a scholarship to a military academy is to apply, period. He lied.

Yes? The way he always suggests he was offered a full scholarship is a self-flattering misrepresentation, either based on fundamental misunderstandings of the process or he's lying to himself and/or the public.

I am not familiar with military academies so I am asking again:

so there is no such thing as 'we will give you a full scholarship' if you apply and are vetted as eligible (like all applicants)?

I actually agree that this story in a vacuum is kind of meaningless - but this image is literally all Ben has.
But it doesn't hurt him in the primary, he's already the victim and had a 90% chance of being the victim of the left-wing media smear.

And he's never had a real shot at the general anyway because he's too black.

A lie implies he knew otherwise. I'm suggesting that like most people he doesn't know shit about the military application process. It sounds like a scholarship, so he called it a scholarship.

Yeah, no way in hell that's true.

Ben Carson is a liar and out of touch, I'm surprised it's taken this long for his tall tales to get this kind of exposure. He says and does whatever he needs to in order to better himself, whether it's true or false, right or wrong, moral or not. He is essentially an "intelligent" well mannered thug, for the most part.

My personal opinion is that he spins these tales and then actually begins to believe them so much that he really does believe them, even to the point of writing them into books and repeating them in interviews.

A good friend of mine who I graduated high school with went to West Point, you do not simply "get invited" to go there. It is a long, arduous and selective process, it took him almost a year to actually get accepted. No general ever simply "invited" Carson to go to West Point, and anyone who ever believed that simply does not know anything about the reality of it.

And now it seems like Westmoreland wasn't even in the city at the time Carson says he was? No surprise there.

People call it a scholarship, but basically, once you're accepted, everything is paid for. I was nominated by a senator for the Air Force Academy and spent a week out there for a summer program, before deciding it wasn't for me.

Btw the Air Force Academy is AMAZING. Visit it if you get a chance.

**Looks at current president**

Damn. I think our current president is a black guy. How the fuck did he get elected, being all black and stuff?

Linda Bob, a black schoolteacher from Eustis, Fla., said that calling Obama black when he was raised in a white family and none of his ancestors experienced slavery could cause some to ignore or forget the history of racial injustice.

"It just seems unfair to totally label him African-American without acknowledging that he was born to a white mother," she said. "It makes you feel like he doesn't have a class, a group."

And more importantly Morgan Freeman:
“First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him … they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America,” Freeman said. “There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America’s first black president hasn’t arisen yet. He’s not America’s first black president — he’s America’s first mixed-race president.”

By all accounts, he was the most exceptional ROTC member his area had ever had, rising to the rank of lieutenant. There is no possible way he wasn't familiar with the academy enrollment processes. It's basically the goal of the supervising military officer to get candidates into the academy.

Everyone gets a "full scholarship" (because the annual cost is $0), but only after they apply and are vetted. And to apply they need to be recommended by certain people.

So in a sense we are all on the same foot, we are all able to get a "full scholarship", we just need to be recommended, apply, vetted and accepted.

Are there accounts beyond his own?

Are you trying to call me a racist, simply because I think Carson is a lying, delusional, and immoral bully? My post has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the fact that Ben Carson lies often about many things. It's okay if you disagree with me but it's not okay for you to insinuate that I'm a racist just because I disagree with your enthusiasm for him.
Are you trying to claim I have enthusiasm for Ben Carson? You're the delusional and immoral bully here.

A few years back a story broke about the Democratic appointed Senator running for re-election got caught having plagiarized his """masters thesis""" (it was like 15 page nonsense thing for one of those phony-ass professional masters projects), and a few other stories broke around the same time about credential fraud in lower office races...

I'm kinda surprised no profs or whatever have put together a project for credential or claim verification. Parties do it all the time as part of oppo research.

That's it right there ... Once he said he had the offer, his whole story falls apart.

Yep, at best he's been intentionally misleading people with the story.

You could explain away the book thing as the ghostwriter being confused, but he never had a formal offer.

Well, Obama lied about his citizenship (he's not American) and religion (he's muslim), and he became our President, so I can't want to see what the liberal media has to say about a mostly inconsequential lie by a big, bad Republican. I'm sure they'll paint it as the biggest travesty in US history.

Or so conservatives will say.

You're getting trolled, Benji's advocating Carson insofar because he personifies and justifies contempt of the American political system.

Ah, sometimes I just don't understand trolling seeing as I try my best to never do it myself. Thanks.

I'm not advocating Carson outside of his amusing existence, I'm disparaging this type of "reporting/scandal" especially the idea it's big news as The Donald put it. This is the type of low quality circle jerk the media spends its time and "debates" on and everyone gobbles it up. And people never seem to realize it only matters to them in that "instant."

Until the next cycle pushes it farther off Wikipedia.

Irrelevant personal embellishment. A kid thinks the wrong general attended his dumb event and dinner. Just horrible.

He was poor as fuck and if they had deadlines to meet to also fit his desires this isn't any kind of smoking gun.

He's a demonstrated liar and fabulist. Why are you wasting energy defending him? He obviously made the whole thing up. A child would see that.

Maybe it's true it only matters to the media in an instant, but it's still their responsibility to report it and it should matter to Americans.

What drives me crazy more than anything is people who won't even allow for the possibility that "their guy" or "their party" did something wrong.

Facebook is a nightmare right now.

his books just say he was offered a chance to go there, not that he ever applied. He does phrase it that he was "offered a full scholarship" or something like that, but this is a benign statement because west point doesn't actually have tuition

I'd argue that it shows ignorance. I seriously lol'd when I saw that he used that word.

Presidential candidate campaigns on personality (because he has nothing else to offer) and bootstraps anecdotes, gets caught lying about said anecdotes, and this is irrelevant?

In the grand scheme of things, Carson's whole campaign is irrelevant. But in context of right now, when Carson is polling first or second nationally, highlighting his lies as, you know, lies seems right on point.

Yeah, because his bootstrap story is "we were poor as shit, then I went to Yale and became a world renown brain surgeon" all the rest of the details are going to be like every other candidates. Embellished. Remembered differently between themselves and others present. Had less to do with them that they think. Etc.

This entire thing was a targeted humble brag, "I was so awesome they offered to let me join the military for free!"

You've got the guy offering you endless substantive material on the one hand, and your big nail in the coffin, above the fold story is that he screwed up the wording of something he didn't do? And the smoking gun is that you got confirmation that he didn't do what he said he didn't do?

Aggggh whatever, I shouldn't let you guys all bait me in over these idiots.
