Best Action RPG Combat?

What games in your opinion constitute what combat in an action rpg should aspire to be? I've never really heard a definitive example brought up.

I like to define "action RPG" as a game where combat is based on character stats, but button inputs directly control each action. Final Fantasy XII and XIII for instance aren't action RPGs despite running in real time because because you control battle button-to-menu-to action, whereas in Kingdom Hearts or the Mana games it's directly from button-to-action.

These games essentially try to combine the twitch gameplay of an action game with the strategy of an RPG, and I am hard-pressed to find a game that achieves a good balance between the two. Most end up feeling like RPGs with weak action elements because they were made by RPG developers who aren't experienced in making action games.

I can't remember very many examples from before current gen, but I do recall looking back fondly on the first Kingdom Hearts after playing KHII, which I thought was a button-masher on normal difficulty. The most interesting example I remember from last gen is Rogue Galaxy. That could've been a pretty good game RPG-wise if one of the earlier spells didn't completely break it, but I got really interested when some of the boss fights made good use of action game skills like dodging attacks and making use of range.

In my opinion Tales of Symphonia (only Tales game I've played) is one of the better recent examples. The usual JRPG gameplay matters as much as any other here, but so does watching boss attack animations and timing your attacks and blocks accordingly. I even found simple moves like knockdowns useful for rounding up enemies and giving casters some breathing room. I never really found myself directly commanding team mates often though. It would be really awesome if a Tales game inherited the Soul Calibur system with heavier RPG elements.

What spurred this whole thing up was me recently going back through the first Mass Effect and remembering how RPG-oriented the game was. The shooting action compared to third person shooters about as well as the aforementioned games compare to Ninja Gaiden, but I'm kind of just now realizing that ME1 is more a game about equipment, stats, and abilities, whereas ME2 removed equipment almost entirely and tried to up the twitch element. Hopefully ME3 goes back to the RPG elements that BioWare is good at.

The games that I think almost definitely nail the best balance between action game skills and RPG skills though are Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. They are the only games I've seen so far with stats that affect your character's movement and other elements typically associated with action games.

You have attack, defense, and resistances of course, but also things like poise, and how your strengths affects how much equipment slows you down. Fights are won not only by playing to stats but also enemy patterns and animations. It's not as fast as a Ninja Gaiden but features a similar level of precision in its controls that is necessary for the game to work.

Yeah this seems like a blog, but I wanted to ask here because there are probably a shitload of action rpgs from the old school console and PC days that I've missed.

TL,DR: I think the Tales games and the first Mass Effect are interesting in how they combine action and RPG elements, but Demon's/Dark Souls does it best right now.

Demon's/Dark Souls, no question. Nothing else even comes close for me.

Combat in the Amalur demo seems great, but it's no D Souls.

Demon's Souls and Dark Soul are my favorite in terms of weight and articulation (hit detection).

Monster Hunter is nice. Love the rhythm of it.

Resonance of Fate has a learning curve that's due to its almost backwards approach. Not a bad thing, you just have to come in fresh and really pay attention. Love it although I think it would've gotten a GREAT reception had it been a little easier early on. Probably the best JRPG this gen in terms of combat. Haven't sunk time into Last Remnant yet though.

I also love euro-RPGS like Divinity II/Gothic 4/Risen for their simple combat. It's perfunctory but somehow satisfying. Don't ask me to make sense, but give I blame the usually stellar worlds/exploration. I'd play any of those over Skyrim.

I personally feel that Kingdom Hearts, particularly the second one and Birth By Sleep are the best action RPGs out. It perfectly strikes a good balance between standard RPG gaming conventions with real time combat.

You mean Xenoblade?

Anyway for as much hate KH2 gets I still love the combat (on Proud mode). It's fun and flashy. Wish we got Final Mix+ for Critical mode. You're doing it wrong if you play it on normal...

Also love Star Ocean 3 and Tales games. Monster Hunter too if that counts but it's not really an RPG.

TWEWY is also unique and fun.

Yeah, but it's kind of an Action SRPG. I think it counts.

RoF is definitely not a SRPG. It's more like a turn based/action RPG hybrid like Valkyrie Profile 2.

I used to think PSO was awesome for being real-time but now Dungeon Fighter's pretty awesome

Does the Gauntlet Legends series count? I loved the beat-em-up gameplay with stat-growth.

Skyward Sword

Yeah I went there.
Yeah it was more RPG-lite, but I definitely could see it being applied to a full RPG

PSO-style game with SS's interface *drool*

So far, it seems like people don't even know what games are action RPGs.

exactly lol, just watched a gameplay video and in no way is Resonance of Fate an action rpg. Neither is any of the Xeno games.

Anyway, I want to say YS games. While they are really repetitive and some might say button mashers, I feel like the combat really shines when you get to the boss fights.

About as much as Kingdom Hearts?

It's just a SRPG, not an action rpg. You don't have full control of your movement/actions at all time and plus it's not even real time.

The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings™
Ys Saga

I know The Witcher is a little more heavy on story and character progression but it's very invovled action.

Kingdom Hearts. Just the first one.

Birth by Sleep was the first KH game I actually felt had decent combat. The way the command deck works is wonderful, and the ability spread is varied. The inclusion of a timed counter ability makes it even better. Most importantly, things are mapped directly to buttons instead of being accessed through a command menu.

Resonance of Fate has juggles and combos. It's more of a hybrid than anything. It's definitely not just turn-based.

You actually do. It's part third person shooter.

Yeah, I've always missed leveling in Zelda games. They had it in II, but I think it really correlates well to the whole 'growing up during an adventure' thing that goes on.

Skyward Sword combat would be pretty neat with a full-fledged RPG.

I liked Witcher 2 a lot. Use of signs on top of the melee combat added a layer of strategy to the game, it felt very satisfying at first, I liked using traps a lot. Slowing down the combat while you pick a sign was a good design too, you could think what to do but not pausing the action like bioware games do. I liked switching swords for different type of enemies too but balancing was poor imo and after a while by unlocking some abilities it got very easy and didn't feel as good as beginning of the game. I don't know how it is in recent patches, haven't touched the game but I think the base they had there was really good, something to build on in future.

But it is. Or can be at least. It's a weird game.

If you guys are saying Resonance of Fate is an action rpg then you mind as well say Valkryia Chronicles is one as well. But guess what? Neither is.

Have yall never played any action rpgs? I feel like yall are really grasping at straws to say this game is an action rpg.

Turns can be actions. There's your action RPG.

baahahhaha if this is the case then FF10 is an action rpg. good to know
I was joking >>

I should have added a :O

I smirked at some of the responses too but I can't answer on other games like Resonance because I haven't played that one in particular but have seen video. Some aren't quite making the distinction as asked in the OP obviously.

oh, whew haha thanks for the laugh though

I'm not following. Resonance of Fate is not a real-time game. Everything stops when it's your turn to act, and you cannot act while others are acting, and you can only go once per round.

Out of the ones I have played.

Dark souls
Witcher
Potentially KoA depending on how the final build turns out

Unless birth by sleep is vastly better then the past games, kingdom hearts is not great.

Monster hunter isn't an RPG.

RoF/EoE is fucking weird and I don't know how to classify it, but it was really fun, and my favorite JRPG this gen.

i remember people fawning over the combat in grandia 2 back in the day, if you're up for something a bit more old school. never played it myself.
