Best Action RPG Combat?

I just remembered how much I liked the combat in Dissidia. I hope SE makes a game with that same system but with an original cast and story (and none of that fan service junk)

Another vote for Tales of Symphonia

Racking up combos with my girlfriend was just such an unmitigated joy. I'd never play anything else but JRPGs if all games had a fun combat system like that. Sadly they went back to boring 'select the right order of menu items' turn-based combat to offset the stilted whiny melodrama. And see what it did to the genre.

So much wrong in one post.

Mind explaining then since you aren't contributing to the thread? Note I am talking about battle system wise and not how Turn based RPG and SRPGs typically are outside of the battle system. And if you are going to say something about attacks having certain range then you mind as well not explain. I'm played many within both genres to know what I'm talking about.

Tried playing the other Tales games?

Fuck stats, seriously. Don't get me wrong, I loved playing pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons back in the day, but the nice thing about computerized Role Playing Games is that you don't have to do all the laboursome bookkeeping anymore and the explicit die rolls and modifiers can be shoved under the hood. It's like saying trains stopped being trains when people didn't have to shovel coal in the flames anymore but relied on electricity and microchips.
Now I'm not exactly sure if I'd consider Zelda an RPG myself, but it's certainly a defendable position.

Huge fan of the combat in the recent Ys games - 6, Origin, Felghana, and especially 7 (loved the dash and skill system). Terranigma had a very good combat system as well - weighty, responsive, with more variety in moves than your typical 16-bit action RPG.

To me, SRPGs are RPGs that are tile-based in their gameplay. That's it. Everything else doesn't matter as long as it has tiles, since I still scroll through menus, choose commands, confirm/cancel characters' turns, and so on, like in a lot of other JRPGs.

Phantom Brave and Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits don't have tile-based gameplay, you are allowed to set your characters on any pixel in a circular movement range. The Growlanser games aren't grid-based either (but they are more RTS-like in their battles than turn-based SRPG).

Sadly no, didn't own a PS and Vesperia was too difficult to get hold of.

For what it's worth, unless you've sold your 360 or it's broken, Vesperia is $30 on Games on Demand. If you liked Symphonia that much, I'd highly recommend giving Vesperia a try. It's much, much better than Symphonia.

Disagree on the bolded--they both have their strengths--but yeah, if you loved Symphonia you really have to give Vesperia a shot.

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. The weight in your character and the melee combat is literally unrivaled at this point.

I know. I'm just thinking about action in the purest sense
Yeah, that's the thing about it. The genre's lines are getting a little blurred, and the Tales games are a good example of that since it has its own take on the genre and it isn't purely an ARPG in the conventional sense. Though I still stand with Graces and Rebirth having my favourite Tales combat. Really awesome.

I wonder if everyone listing Symphonia will have their minds blown if they play Graces? Also, I concur with the people saying that if you like Symphonia's combat, at least try Vesperia's out. Way better.
