If you have 3 friends to play with, get this game. It's a genius back-and-forth between co-op and competitive (1 of the 3 is competitive, but every time they die the person that killed them becomes the new "1").

Easily my favourite local multiplayer game on Steam right now.

Love it!

Also want to give a shout out to

Ultimate Chicken Horse which is a competitive Mario Maker like game. You build a level step by step with random pieces and then play it with your friends. When they die due to one of your pieces you get points. But you still have to play together to make the level playable or nobody gets points.

Since Bomberman is already in this thread, I'd also like to mention Speedrunners, which is also great offline.

Other more recent games that are great in local Co-Op and all on steam.
  • Spelunky
  • Battleblock Theater
  • Magicka
  • BroForce
  • the Trials games

This one is pretty easy for me: it's mystic heroes (for gamecube or ps2)

A friend and I played this game for a whole fucking summer vacation (6 weeks in germany) pretty much everyday with some days in between going to the outdoor-pool with friends. The multiplayer campaing can be played through in one sitting and was approx. 2-3 hours long (if my memory doesn't deceive me) but it was so.much.fun. you had these different heroes with special abilities and it was essentially sort of a musou as you would have to fight waves of enemies with boss fights at the end of every stage (not as many enemies as in the popular musou games, but still)

I loved Lost Vikings in coop. Don't know if it would hold up today, but from memory it was one of the most fun I ever had in a coop game. I also really enjoyed playing Mario Kart on SNES in coop. The grand prix on 150cc was a real challenge that was more doable working together against the CPU.

New Super Mario Bros Wii/Wii U
Rayman Origins/Legends
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Yoshi's Woolly World
Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D Land

Talking console games...

Resident Evil 5. Best split-screen coop game ever.
Shitty in 1 player but perfection if you coop it.

Special mentions:
Halo series
Diablo 3 + expansion

Play PS4 couch co-op a lot with the wife and would massively recommend:

Borderlands Handsome Collection
Divinity: OS (amazing game!)
Diablo 3: UEE
Helldivers

Enjoying Battleborn

Expect to get RE5 soon

Portal 2 was one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a game couch co-op, really made both players work together.

+1 For this.

That final stage kept wrecking me and my friend.

My faves:

Starcraft Brood War (PC LAN)
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (PS2)
Guardian Heroes (Saturn)
Contra (NES)
Nintendo Land (Wii U)
FIFA (PS4)

Within the last decade, the most fun I've had were with Halo 3, Castle Crashers, TRINE, Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light, Rayman Origins.

Contra (NES)

You played Brood War on a couch?

The Halo games, wrestling games, FPS where you are part of a team are the best. I used to love playing Perfect Dark in co op as well as the multiplayer challenges.
I haven't yet owned a Xbox One or PS4.

Recently bought Towerfall Ascension in the flash sale and oh boy! That was so much fun with just one person! I want to try it with 2 other people next time.

Some of my favorites:

Halo 3
Mario Kart Double Dash
Kirby Air Ride
Portal 2
Minecraft

Off the top of my head, I'd say:
  • Jamestown: The respawn timer was an amazing mechanic that made those of us who had died cheer on the remaining players to hang on until we could respawn
  • Monaco: Unique abilities mean lots of mayhem when someone can get easily past an obstacle but the others have to try more roundabout ways of getting to the target location. Always loved using the mole for digging out passageways, even though we kept attracting guards due to the noise
  • Wii Play - Tanks mini-game: This was rather fun compared to the rest of the mini-games in the compilation
  • Risk of Rain: Fairly cool in that you have to split the powerup items among your party, and combat is fairly fun
  • NES Chip & Dale: I remember having a whole lot of fun with my cousins back when we were kids, but it might've aged badly. Picking up boxes and your friend opend up a pretty fun and interesting design space
  • New Super Mario Bros series: Most levels were clearly never intended for having four players at once, but the mayhem that happens as a result is really fun. The number of times we all got into a bubble at the same time by mistake were too many to mention, but it was always hilarious

Castle Crashers and Trine 2 would be my picks. :)

I've been wanting to try Divinity OS local co-op, but I'm not sure how well it works. Any impressions?

For me some of the best was 2k football, 2k4 and 2k5, Xbox, 4 vs 4 online and it was an absolute blast. I miss that so much. Hockey has kept the couch co op going and it's great, I'm over madden being the only football in town but I just wish they'd have 2 on 2 or 4 on 4 as the 2k games did. I mean it worked flawless also, that was over a decade ago. By default we should still have that since it's merely a mode

This topic tickles me and makes me sad that the current trend is ignoring couch co-op. What am I supposed to do with my wife? Talk with her about our feelings? Come on, devs.

Mario Kart(basically any console version of it)
might get some flak but RE6 was fantastic couch co-op! played through 3/4 campaigns and had a blast
Double Dragon Neon(same bud from RE6...he beat me at the final stage!! NOOOOOOOO)

I would say Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game but thanks to publishing issues, it's now lost the the throes of time. Shame too, I really enjoyed that game and it was very enjoyable with coop.

But other than that, Metal Slug 3, Castle Crashers, Zombie Nation, Rocket League and Helldivers should be good to play!
