Tried just eating smaller portions for over a decade and it never worked. Without hard rules I either always cheated or my concept of "smaller portions" slowly got bigger and bigger until I obviously wasn't on a diet anymore. Being specific often helps with following a habit change. Without specifics and measuring often you don't get the feedback loop that causes positive change.

Cut out added sugar.

Focus on veggies, protein and fiber. Beyond that eat sensibly, when you're hungry.

I went vegan for ethical and environmental reasons, but I lost a good deal of weight as a side effect. My diet consist of beans, lentils, veggies, fruits, whole grains and nuts and seeds. I eat till I'm good and full and watch my salt and sugar. I try to stick to whole foods, but I eat some pasta, wraps and bread a few times a week. I also still sneak in some pizza and ice cream, but vegan versions of course.

A typical day might be oatmeal with peanut butter and sliced banana, a bean burrito for lunch and lentil curry for dinner. Snacks usually consist of fruits and nuts or a small sandwich.

I've never been healthier or slimmer and I have more energy than ever before.

Solid advice, but the bolded isn't set in stone, like with intermittent fasting for example.

Certainly not, but it keeps me from being tempted to "make up" for a long day of little eating with huge meals. I also find that it helps with my blood sugar and focus, which is a good bonus.

For some reason lately I've been eating a huge lunch and that's it. It's not on purpose, that's just the only time I get hungry. :/ Probably not very good for me though.

Download MyFitnessPal, count calories, exercise alittle and you will weight, lost 7kg in 3 months from counting calories.

No offense but this is fucking shit advice, advice like this is a reason why people fail to lose weight. Counting calories through something like a Calorie counter allows you to slowly become knowledgeable on how many calories certain foods have, once you use the app enough you can easily guess basic foods and have no problem, but to say *just eat smaller portions* to someone with NO KNOWLEDGE of food and how much calories each has will set them to fail.

Eat less sugar and eat your food slower. Combine that with a small daily exercise that you wouldn't normally do; even just a few minutes at the beginning and/or the end of the day will knock off a small chunk of calories that will eventually add up for something that really isn't hard work.

Low carb.

When you buy groceries stay out of the middle isles, stick with meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Have a chicken salad instead of chicken sandwich, don't eat a lot of pasta, and start having a protein shake and a fruit for lunch instead of hamburgers and pizza.

What people are saying about sugar. Shit is poison.

Try to limit fried foods. When you get fast food, don't get french fries.

If fries/chips are a part of your diet, abstaining them as well as soda for several months- I guarantee some sort of weight loss.

I lost all excess weight and gained muscle with OMAD. (One meal a day)
It is not for everyone, ie. you fast for 16+ hours then eat healthy foods only, nothing in a packet. Exercise is done on an empty stomach too.
As I said not for everyone, and please get advice from your doctor as always before you do something like this.
Even if you don't go to the same lengths, Intermittent fasting is amazing. I started seeing results in a very short time, and no I wasn't starving myself at all.
I will say however just drink water, and if you need to drink something else have green tea, or rooibos tea, something full of antioxidants. If your body doesn't gain anything from it, don't put it in your mouth!

Lower carb intake(increase good fat intake), limit sugar intake the best you can, regular exercise (weight lifting/walking etc), plus a good amount of fiber and vegetables(leafy greens). Protein-rich foods are good. Avoid processed foods and takeaways. Smaller portions. Drink a good amount of water (at least 1L+ a day, more if you are thirsty.) Cut out orange juice/soda.

Cook with Olive Oil/Coconut Oils. Avoid trans fat(fried foods, doughnuts etc) Increase Omega-3 fat intake.

Do low carb and high fat or high carb and low fat. Never eat carbs with fat.

Plus exercising. Cycling is good. Forget gyms and weight training. Aerobic fitness is the Shit.

Remember, sugar is not the enemy. Vegans who eat shittons of carbs are usually lean and outlive all other diets.

Eat healthy 90% of the time and workout. Check the scales next week and if you haven't lost anything, workout harder. Simple.

You don't need complex diets or strategies, especially if you are an out of shape beginner.

Great summary honestly. I've lost weight on high fat/low carb and low fat/high carb.

Fat and carbs are dangerous. Incidentally, look at all junk food. It's basically that combination with tons of salt. Not everyone can do low carb, plus can it get pricey.

I can attest that drinking more water, cutting out sugars, and portion control are key to weight loss.

It's dull and tedious, but it works.

If you are obese and sedentary, cut out carbs. Carbs are not necessarily the enemy but they are good for athletes, laborers, hard workers who can utilize the cheap source of energy. A low carb, higher fat and higher protein diet, moderate increase in exercise and activity level, there is no wau you will not lose weight. It is all calories in versus calories out. Eat eggs, meat, veggies, keep calories to below 2000 and do at least 60 minutes of walking/jogging/sprinting etc.

Nothing wrong with it so long as you're meeting your calories and macros for the day, but that takes some figuring out so chances are you're right and that it's not ideal right now. I typically plan my meals (meal really) out 1-2 days in advance and plug it into MyFitnessPal so I know what my days look like ahead of time.

I lost 97 pounds last year and all I did was count calories drop soda and all sugar and walk anywhere that was less than a mile from my house.

Low carb diet and some light cardio helped me, i didn't count any calories i ate until i felt full i even ate late night snacks during weekends etc i lost around 1KG a week.

Question: zero calorie / diet sodas. No bad weight-drop side effects to these?

Just ordered a slab of beef jerky.

Limit carbs to one serving a day. And make it something like a wrap, or an English muffin. Maybe a quarter cup of rice or one potato.

If you do that, regardless of what else you do, I guarantee you'll lose weight.

Source: Have lost 100lbs+.

Not really. They aren't the healthiest thing for you, but drinking a diet soda isn't that big of a deal if you keep it reasonable.

I don't drink more than 2 cans a day at most.

If you go on a diet to lose weight, then you'll just gain it all back after. If you're serious about this, you should think about what lifestyle changes you should make permanently so that you'll always be at your ideal weight.

Bingo this.

Like someone else suggested start looking at what you are eating and make healthy swaps. Especially snacks. When you start excising and being more active, you become more hungry and want to eat between meals, particularly after working out. Having a healthy alternative thought out and the appropriate size will do wonders.

Also, cut sugary drinks. Water is the best solution, sodas are probably the worst. Cut things like beer as well.

Trying myself and its hard in december particularly lol.

Keeping myself in ketogenisis for the last couple years has been the healthiest I've felt and tested in my life. It's not for everybody though, so have a decent talk with an doctor who's actually familiar with it. Also if you do attain ketogenisis be prepared to work out a lot.

The problem is that telling people to "just eat healthy" is super vague, and likely unhelpful. If you knew how to "eat healthy", you wouldn't be asking. Also, exercise is not very effective as a weight loss tool. Even doing wind sprints for an hour will only burn about 500 calories -- about a cookie and a half.

Reducing carbs to a single serving a day is a very easy rule of thumb that effectively forces you to eat healthy. You can't drink sugary soda (carbs), you can't eat ice cream, cake, or almost any dessert (carbs), you can't drink alcohol (carbs), you can't eat fast food (carbs).

If you go on a low-carb diet, you'll be naturally forced to gravitate to healthy foods like grilled chicken, steak, salads, eggs, fish, veggies, nuts, etc. Just don't eat too much cheese.

So long as you don't use it as an excuse to eat something else, its fine. You can't say "Oh, I just had a diet soda, now I can have a piece of candy."

For me, Ive just been counting calories. Calculate TDEE, and go from there. You could lose weight eating chocolate if you wanted of course, but you aren't going to feel good and its not going to set you up with long lasting habits. Figure out what works for you, what fills you up, and all that. Don't overdo it. Start to pay attention to all the other nutrition metrics, but don't get too hung up at first to where you get discouraged.

Always remember, you can't outrun a poor diet.

Oh, and weigh everything you possibly can. You would be surprised at how little can be so many calories.

People make dieting too stressful. You can still lose weight regularly and still eat bad food and soda. Make a lifestyle change and not a diet because diets are only temporary. Eat less, calorie count (this gets easy once you get a good idea of what is what) and set a calorie goal that's decided on your height and gender. Try to eat healthier things like fish.

Don't make yourself miserable and always stay positive. The key to maintaining a diet is to be comfortable.

All those weirdo diets are bad for you and you'll never keep up on it OP. Exercise is more important than diet anyhow, I lost a bunch a weight a few years ago and have been able to keep it off despite having donuts and McDonalds as staples of my diet.

Just try to stay away from carbs and especially sugar when you can. Like go for another burger over ice cream you know? Add butter to shit instead of added sugar. And like even then go for more fish and especially eggs. Just eat eggs all the time. Cheese sucks. Use spices and oils to make food taste better when you cook at home. Don't buy snacks. Chug that sweet sweet coffee and tea when you're hungry until you're not hungry any more, but use a straw so you don't hurt your enamel quite as much.

I like to imagine that eating tons of hot sauce/green beans/spinach speeds up my digestive system to the point where I don't have time to absorb as much sugar, but this is based on literally nothing except how much better I feel after taking a huge shit after eating a lot or a night of drinking.

Sorry, but I highly disagree.

Diet is much more important that exercise. You can not out run a bad diet.

However, diet & exercise do go hand in hand.

This isn't true (not the part about you having McDonalds, but the part about exercise being more important than diet).

It's far easier to minimize the amount of calories and carbs you ingest than spending hours each day working to burn them off.

I don't know what I'm doing then. Maybe if you're running super slow/fast walking and not weight lifting?

I got in shape with zero diet changes probably about five years back by starting weight lifting and interval running a few times a week. The main change I've made in my diet since then is introducing a lot more McDoubles (I didn't eat red meat back then) and I'm currently in better shape than I was back then.

I guess I walk around instead of driving, but again that's not diet either 🤔

I guess my point is that regardless of which is more effective or whatever, you don't need to change your diet much to get in shape outside of the easy stuff like no more ice cream and cheese regularly. It's much easier to maintain a daily burger and donut after the gym long term than it is to go on some weirdo diet that doesn't even let you eat French fries whenever you feel like it imo. I don't have a super defined six pack but what can you do
