Best DS games?

None of these games really do anything for me after playing blockbuster titles like Gears of War and God of War and FF12 on a big ass LCD 40" with surround sound. I think I might sell my DS . rhythm action games do nothing for me so Ouenden is outta the question. Sports games on handheld? again thats pretty lame I reckon. Meteos was ok until i realised i could do well in it by playing with my eyes closed...(just keep moving the stylus down the screen every second). Phoenix Wright was good at first then got really lame by chapter 3 with its obscure and convulted puzzles. Most of the games seem like they're made for a younger audience in mind. I'm 28 so maybe thats why almost every game that is good doesnt appeal to me? I dunno. I'm not trying to start a flame war just saying how it is for me.
Same with PSP too why play any of its games when bigger better versions of them are out on PS2? I havent used my PSP in ages and dont think I beat a single game on it.
I bought a DS to get Castlevania those two games are simply way ahead of anything else.

SUPER ULTIMATE UBER TROLL, CONFIRMED!!!! Wow, start a thread just to say that you hate handhelds? I would call this the most pointless exercise ever, but I was just about to start a PERSONAL TOP 5 DS GAMES thread, so it's helped me.

Anyway, i've just discovered Gunpey, and that's a great puzzler! But you can get it on the PSP, although I think the Stylus control is unbeatable

Also, Worms: Open Warfare is fantastic, but not much different from the other Worms games, but you can play it on the move, and the local Wireless play is awesome. BUT THEY SHOULD BE SHOT FOR NOT HAVING WIFI IN IT! The single player has such a ridiculous wait for the computer to take its turn though...

I'm older than you are, and I probably do more gaming on my DS at the moment than anywhere else. If you are looking for big blockbusters on a big screen with surround sound, I'm going to go out on a limb and say portable gaming might not be for you.

Oh come one, I know what you mean, I was also there with Mario bros 3 and this NSMB doesn't feel as grand but I think any new comer will love it as much as we love the older Marios.

NSMB is good enough to make my 8 years old niece love Mario forever.

we are too jaded, that's all.
I suppose you may be right :P

Yoshis Island sucked.

It was such a great disappointment..
No, YOUR favorite game sucks!

But seriously, Yoshi's Island has the most satisfying platforming in any game in years. Most platformers nowadays are simple exercises in going from point A to point B, with no sense of accomplishment in actually doing so, but Yoshi's Island actually makes you work to get to the end of a level. The most likely reason someone might have for disliking it is that they were conditioned by pretty much every platformer in the past 10 years to expect to finish the game without actually having to think about what they were doing, so when they get to a difficult area in YI:DS they automatically think "this sucks" and turn it off.

My only issue with YI DS is that it was a little too sadistic in a few of the levels if you were trying to get 100. That and the music ****ing stank, but that's not a major issue in a platformer for me.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime - Somewhat simple adventure game with awesome tank battles scattered about. I'm actually playing this right now, and love it so far. There are a number of little references to DQ8 that fans of that game will also appreciate. I just wish the main quest was a little more challenging.

Jump Ultimate Stars - This game completely took over my life for about three weeks. Like someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it's like Smash Brothers with a rock-paper-scissors character system, character leveling, and a mission-based single player quest. There is also online play, which will humble you (or at least, that's what happened to me). Great title.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Have about 200 hours of your time that you're looking to invest elsewhere? This game is deep as hell, and if you have even a passing interest in turn-based strategy games you can hardly do better on the DS. No online play (released before Nintendo WFC), but there's enough to do regardless.

2D platforming heaven!

Edit: I was in pretty much the same situation after NSMB I hadn't bought any new DS games. last weekend I walked into a store, saw YI DS bought it and I have been playing it non stop for a week now. Next on my list is probably ThemePark.

Try to find a MMZero game for GBA. Play it. Then imagine it easier, and with a more confusing level structure. That's MMZX.

'Metroid' comparisons are flawed. It's just a connected overworld that's immensely annoying to navigate.

Shame.

I sort of get what the original troll was trying to get at though. I just bought a DS, and there are about 10 games I really want to play which is cool.

But possibly what the OT meant to say was that it does seem that the DS, and handhelds in general, seem to get the........secondary attention from developers. In that, there are no epic, system selling games that just jump out at the aveage consumer.

Nothing that says, if you're a gamer, you will buy a handheld just to play this game.

That being said, the original troll would miss out on some very good games like Puzzle Quest which doesn't get a lot of attention (outside of GAF).

Since the DS is backwards compatible with the GBA...If you can possibly find a copy of Ninja Five-0, buy it. That is in my top 10 favorite games for any system in the last couple years. Also, Astroboy on the GBA is extremely good.

No love for Contact!?! I just started playing it, but from what I've played it's awesome.

Meteos and Castlevania DOS are my DS classics too date.

Would give a nod to Lunar Knights... but I'm stuck on a (seemingly) simple part and it's ruining the game for me. >_<

IMO, Lunar Knights isn't perfect, I died a few times in an annoying way. Still one of the best games so far.

Sorry but Contact isn't even above average and not worth the full price at all in my book. I bought and resold it after playing with it a couple of frustrating hours (or rather, boring). All you need to do is target an enemy and ... get some coffee and take a shower or something. No wait, then you'll die because you didn't bring enough HP refill items with you - at later levels, that is. The costumes are funny and the game has a retro feel to it, but that's it -- the skill system is next to useless, you can only use one in five minutes or so.

Anyway, on Lunar Knights, I've been thinking about getting it as a platformer fan, but I do not love any anime stuff at all (Castlevania PoR's Death boss was sooo ugly, damn... ) so I'm holding back for now. How is it?

Advance Wars > ALL

New Super Mario
Mario Kart
Castlevannia
Big Brain Academy

There were alot of other good games on the ds but those were my favorite.

I think this thread stopped being about him a long time ago.

Everything at GAF is a thinly veiled trolling topic. May as well roll with the punches.

that trailer looked sick...what was wrong with the first one?
The game is a fast-paced arcade-style shooter, but it forces you to use the touchscreen to change weapons without allowing you to do it using a button. This forces you to take your eyes off the top screen (where the action is) to find the right icon, touch it, then put your hands back in the old-school shooter position. In the meantime, something has destroyed your ship.

Needless to say, this broke the game BIG TIME. Fortunately, Shin'en has is publishing it themselves this time around, meaning that the publisher won't push touchscreen control on them like they did with the first game.

I loved Contact but it's somewhat difficult to recommend, especially considering all the hate that it got on this board.

Kirby Canvas Curse
New super mario Bros
Yoshi´s Island
Castlevania Portrait of ruin
CAstlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Trauma Center

The DS can't compare with the 360 or the PS3?

Duh!

The DS is for the freaking bathroom. That is where we keep the charger and the games.

I'm 30 and the DS rules, even though I have a 360 and a Wii. This means that the OP has bad taste.

I just bought a pink DS for my wife (because she just bought me GH2 and I need something for her to do while I play) along with Mario Kart and NSMB. Both of these games are incredible. I have been scouring the web for the last several days trying to decide on what my next purchase would be. My wife keeps begging me to get her a Chiuaua (or however you spell it), so her next game is obvious. I have paid zero attention to the DS for the last couple of years, so I had no idea what was good. I must thank the OP and all contributors to this thread for simplifying the process of buying my next game. Thanks!

Hey guys! I only like high-profile high-budget AAA games on my console with top of the line audio and visuals...What games would you recommend that would never fit into my extremely narrow tastes?

Don't be too sure! My girlfriend is a dog fanatic who also really likes the DS. I got her Nintendogs and she found it stupid, simplistic and extremely geeky. She played 10 minutes and never touched it again.

Wow, that sucks.

So I guess you'd have to be holding the damn stylus the entire time you are playing the game.

Pink owner here as well, for much the same reasons. Got it for my wife and daughter, bought a M3 Simply so I can load up Viva Pinata cartoons(not kidding) and music on it for my daughter's ride to school.

Funny thing happened though, I can't stop playing the damn thing. I'm about halfway through C-DoS. Probably my next game is Puzzle Quest, but I'm not sure yet. Love threads like this, I've seen several games mentioned that I hadn't heard of yet that look great.

Tried out Picross DS and cannot believe it has not been released in the states yet. I'm not really into puzzle games, but I can see myself finishing this one.

Is there a EUR version out there available for importing?

EDIT: bah, looks like no EUR version until May 11th.

Maybe they saw it and said to themselves: "Well look, someone said it already. Maybe I don't need to say it again!"
Exactly, you shouldn't give your opinion if someone else already mentioned the game.

.. oh wait...

Puzzle Quest,
Puzzle Quest,
PUZZLE QUEST!

Seriously, after getting this game, I've played it almost 5-8 hours a day, and it still is fun.

Also Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, and EBA.

I'm not a guy im a pretty hot chick actually (I been told).

Anyway the other games are great theyre just made for kids a lot of them though lets be honest..who in their right mind would play animal crossing if theyre older than say 22?
or new super mario bros? im sorry but i prefer my games to have more dept hence the reason i love the castevania games not to mention their awesome soundtracks.

That you very well may be, but this is the Internet, hence why it matters not a single bit if what you are saying is true. Internet personas are wonderful things. You don't really think that I'm a dangerously aggressive, lightning-bolt wielding, short-haired, buck-toothed rodent that kills, do you? In the end though, it doesn't matter, since what you say will ultimately define how people judge you.

Back on topic though: it would simply seem that your taste in gaming doesn't suit handhelds very well. If you're after depth, Animal Crossing, Advanced Wars, FF Tactics and Pokemon all have what you're looking for in spades if you're willing to give them a shot. If you don't want to because their art styles and marketing spread the net as wide as possible (hence the need to appeal to kids as well as adults), then you're missing out on some pretty deep games - it's as simple as that.

If you're after cinematic or console-like experiences, then I'm afraid you'll need to look on consoles. Or the PSP, as a matter of fact. Some of those ports of PS1 RPGs are extremely good, especially if you haven't played the originals.

Anyway, it looks as though your thread was hijacked and it turned into a name-your-favourite-DS-game thread.

Only in Japanese? Fail if so.
It's just a puzzle game. You don't need to know any japanese to actually play the game, and, you can just fumble through the menu if necessary.

I've played through Hudson's Puzzle Series Vol 4 (Kakuro), 5 (Slither Link), 10 (Hitori), 11 (Nurikabe) and 12 (Akari) without actually knowing what any of the menus actually say.

The interface kinda sucks compared to the nice new flash interface that Nikoli is currently using on their website (http://www.nikoli.com/en/), but, if you're into those kinds of japanese puzzles, the DS games are definitely importable/playable without any japanese knowledge, assuming you already know how to solve those kind of puzzles. They are kinda short though, but, considering the snail's pace at which Nikoli releases new puzzles on the website, it was well worth the purchase for me.

Oh, and the puzzle themselves are designed by Nikoli, so they have the usual Nikoli feel to them, and not the weird copycat feel. I don't know if anyone will understand what I mean by that...

(Here's to hoping that we can get a US release of all the games on a single cart!)

O Holy DS I worship thee. I am not worthy to play thou.

I am seriously scared to purchase a DS because of all its excellent games. My social life is already deteriorated by xbox live. I could bring the DS anywhere and play all day. I can't even call my self a serious gamer because I simply don't have access to the DS library.

New Super Mario Bros is great
Elite Beat Agents
Mario Kart(especially online) is CLASSIC
I can't wait for Zelda DS, and if they ever do decide to make an online Smash Bros. DS game consider me ecstatic(crosses fingers)
