Best fighting games of last gen

Watching some reviews of Guilty Gear Xrd has rekindled my desire to get into fighting games, only the thing that has always been holding me back is the fact online play does little for me, and I believe isn't that great in fighting games anyway due to lag, and the fact I don't have many people to play with in real life, so really I have two questions:

1) What are/were the best fighting games of last gen, the best games and best versions of them etc (I'm aware SFIV has had a good few versions etc)

2) What is the best way to find/get into a fighting game community? I'm based near London in the UK, I have little hope of finding anywhere closer than London, but is there a site or way of finding out where meet ups are held?

Let's see. Mortal Kombat 9 is great for people who aren't into fighting games. Simple inputs, a long single player campaign with excellent presentation and a couple of side games.

SF4 is a great game for finding competitive play and there are sites like shoryuken, which should have subsections for offline matchmaking/events.

Starting with my avatar, I'm going to say BlazBlue but the quality of each iteration is different. Since BBCP2 isn't on consoles yet, I can't say anything about the latest version.

Now that that's out of the way.

King of Fighters XIII: Steam Edition - Why Steam Edition? It contains the bug fixes that the arcade version got post-console release and has playable netcode.

Under Night In-Birth Exe Late - Probably one of my favorite games last gen in general. It's an anime fighter with a stronger focus on a ground game. It is also playable online.

Soul Calibur V - Best in the series in terms of mechanics and netcode.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - Same as SCV, but with a truck load of content.

Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online Edition - I just love third strike because it's fun and the netcode in this is awesome.

Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm - Still being worked on, but very fun indie fighter with good netcode. They're implementing GGPO instead for full release.

Street Fighter x Tekken v2013 - People dump on the game, but I doubt most have tried v2013. The netcode is pretty good, too.

I'll second Arcana Heart 3 when Six Stars is announced for consoles and Melty Blood is always a great choice if that counts.

If you don't care about netplay anymore, then ignore those comments.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is the best by far for me personally.

But I have also loved and enjoyed Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Tekken 6: BR, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV: AE, SoulCalibur V, Virtua Fighter 5: FS, and Dead or Alive 5 (in that exact order).

Love playing:
  • Ultra Street Fighter 4
  • KoF XIII
  • Persona 4 Ultimax
  • Guilty Gear Xrd

Love watching:
  • Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
  • Street Fighter 3rd Strike (Not a last gen game but the Online Edition was release for last gen consoles)
  • Capcom vs SNK 2

Last gen only titles (for now): USF4, KoF XIII, P4U and UMvC3.

Not a single person said Under Night In-Birth.
God fucking dammit.

Probably because it's not out in America.

I own it and like it. Wish the netcode were better and Merkava (i think that's its name) weren't so stupid.

Despite playing USF4 more, I'd say the crown goes to either KOF XIII or TTT2.

USF4 has stuff like option select, vortex and a skewed against charge characters, all of which I dislike.
