Best Graphical Showcases of this gen?

I can't say for sure that it doesn't reach 60 fps sometimes. But It's not locked at 60 fps.

I just finished a 3 hour session with God of War III. It's 60 fps most of the time (and yes, pretty amazing looking).

BTW, for those poo-pooing the 360, you have to consider Red Dead in the upper echelon. And don't forget PGR4. It kills Prologue but even though it won't stand up to GT5 in every category.

I believe the FPS is unlocked, can you tell the difference between high 40's and 60fps?

In 3 hours, I really doubt it was 60fps for more than a fraction of the time to be honest.

It's close enough, especially considering how amazing it looks. Do people really whine that it's not locked at 60?

Doesn't hold up that well anymore. I just bought it with the recent deal, and was disappointed. It might push a lot of technical prowess, but it's pretty dull and lacks the vibrancy of something like Uncharted 2.

Fallout 3 with graphic mods looks the best I've seen anywhere, but boy does my system crawl when I turn everything up.
God it's so true:

Indoor environments in Alan Wake really impressed me.

Guys, please don't pick games based on trailers and online videos. Couple of people mentioned KillZone 3. Well, you cannot judge the game until you play it in your TV.

Crysis

Man, I wish high budget PC exclusives still existed. Such large environments with details that absolutely destroy current gen games technically and it's almost 3 years old...

As for Consoles:

Uncharted 2
GOW3
Killzone 2
Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 (one of the most "eye pleasing" games I ever played)
Muramasa (Amazing, just amazing)

We have played Killzone 2. Killzone 3 is on the list by default.

Totally!

Crysis by far, add in the real-lifesys mod and it's just gravy. Still beats anything on the consoles easily and all of the PC games I've seen barring graphic "preference" which a lot of people confuse with fidelity.

Then add in all the destructables and it's a no brainer.

For consoles I'd go with

God of War III
Gears 2
Uncharted 2

and the winner is:

Red Dead Redemption.

- Dirt 2 looks completely incredible, at least on PC. Sad thing is that screens don't really do it justice. Gotta play it in cockpit mode.
- Crysis of course is an obvious mention as well as Warhead.
- Metro 2033 is awesome, the atmosphere and lighting is second to none.
- ARMA II can be absolutely astonishingly good looking at times.
- Mirror's Edge hits the perfect balance between art and tech.
- X3 & Terran Conflict may be some of the most boring games ever made, but god damn do they look good.

It really is a shame.... how so many people reject Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time. That game was 60 FPS people. Something that Guerilla Games and Naughty Dog both couldn't accomplish.

But I was also extremely impressed with Dead Space.

but I gotta say I'm impressed by how SMG1+2 squeezes everything worth of the Wii.
Art style goes a loooong way. Which is why I'm more impressed with games like MadWorld than most of the 360 games I have, all because of stylized graphics and art.

The new Zelda Skyward Sword is looking pretty good and so is Kirby's Epic Yarn. I appreciate these games because they have that timeless look to them.

Pretty sure in about 6 months a lot of us will be saying Kirby's Epic Yarn.

As for GT5, it looks amazing, but as soon as someone pulls off decent looking volumetric smoke, GT5 will seem dated. As soon as smoke is thrown up in GT5 the illusion is broken for me.

Wasn't it at the cost of sub-HD and not so impressive lighting?

Epic Yarn does look cool but Zelda? Really? You could have told me it was Twilight Princess and I would have believed you. I have no problem with the 'timeless' look (I just call that dated though) but I would love to see what Zelda or Mario would look like on an HD system in 720p+ (or even a cheesed upscaled 540p amirite?!). I mean seeing dust come off blocks you move, dirt moving, tracks, deformation ... art style can only take you so far with how good a game looks. Take WoW for instance, amazing art style ... but I'll be damned if it doesn't look old and dated.

IMHO, Crysis doesn't count b/c the framerate still sucks for 95% of PC owners. For some, Crysis might not be a graphical showpiece for their PC until 2013.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying that the PC doesn't belong in this thread b/c of the scalability of the hardware--kind of makes the point of the topic irrelevant. Does PC hardware really have "generations"?

I will agree that maybe Crysis doesnt hold up as good, maybe cause its grass fucking sucks! And there is no way of applying transparency Supersampling to it. But Crysis Warhead, now that altogether a different deal! It looks so good when transparency Supersampling is applied and all settings max. Here are a few screenies-

It's an unfair world.

EDIT: Let me just add that gaming hardware is still gaming hardware, whether it's a PC or console. Should a current gen game that also has a PS2 or Wii version "not count" either just because some people can't experience the full graphical fidelity that the title has to offer?

based off of games I've played & on Consoles only
for tech and or art style
Uncharted 1 & 2
Killzone 2
Super Star dust HD
Flower
Farcry 2
Mirror's Edge
wipeout HD Zone Mode
GT5P

IMO they do, though they are much shorter than console ones. For example, I would say that when 8800s and Core 2 duos launched, it was a new generation. Then when Core i7 and ATI 5870/Nvidia 400 series launched, a new generation began. And the jumps in power are huge. For example, my 8800/C2D system could hardly pull 15FPS in Crysis warhead with all settings max, 4xAA and Transparency supersampling. Now my GTX470/i7 system does 60FPS average on that!

I have no idea. I played it at 720P, didn't notice any scaling issues at all. Not so impressive lighting? I felt the lighting was phenomenal and really complemented the trademark futuristic atmosphere the game employs.

It wasn't a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but the only game in this generation that stunned me with it's leap over what I'd become accustomed to was Fight Night Round 3.

A few people mentioned Mirror's Edge. It kind of flies under the radar a bit but the game looks strikingly realistic sometimes, or surrealistic if I may. I played it on the PS3 and the lack of AA hurt it, but it looks amazing on the PC screens and footage I've seen.

Me likes:

Tier 1:

1) GOW III
2) UC2
3) KZ2

Tier 2:

1) Dead Space
2) Batman: Arkham Asylum
3) BioShock

Tier 3)

1) Far Cry 2
2) Demon's Souls
3) Red Dead Redemption

Honorable Mentions: Burnout Paradise; MLB 10: The Show; BFBC2; NHL 10; Little Big Planet; WipEout HD.

2005-Current - Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3

Current-Late 2010 - Gran Turismo 5

Not even Crysis compares from a realistic visuals point of view to GT5.

Also an honorable mention to Gears of War 1, next-gen started when that game was released.

I was always amazed when the camera was panned out in the beginning of each level, leaving me thinking that a cutscene was still in the works, but in reality I could move Ratchet through the level. Mind... BLOWN!

GoW3 has no equal on consoles.

Modded Crysis on PC looks as good as anything is ever going to.

Oh come on....games still have an everest to surmount until visuals reach the level of say FFXIII cg...crysis looks amazing...but it is nowhere near high quality cg level...thus we still have far to go
