Best JRPG on... Android?

That's right Android.

Gaf it's no secret I like JRPG's (unlike certain secrets that are to everyone). It's also no secret that I have a mobile phone.

Put 2 and 2 together and it comes to light that I might want to play a JRPG on this vibrating device in my pocket.

Unlike most console games JRPG's actually work on mobile devices. Their slow pace, easily translatable menu and movement controls, and general design actually works on a touchscreen. Which makes me interested in what there is available to play that's why I'm passing this question off to you GAF the brilliant video game hive mind and think tank.

What are some of the best JRPG's on mobile?

Final fantasy record keeper if you're a fan of grinding, systems, loot, and final fantasy sprites and music.

Its really a lot of fun and an active GAF community as well.

if you're on the newest version of Android avoid any RPG from square-enix

The amount of time they take to update games is insane. idk how long they took to fix them for KK and unsure if Lollipop support has been patched in yet.

Steven Universe: Attack the Light

I'm only half joking. It's a must if you liked Paper Mario, and it's not a port!

Just play the Dragon Quest games. Final Fantasy Dimensions was decent too for an original RPG

Fuck no, look at the screenshots on the store page and tell me that's worth playing.

Looks alright to me. Gameplay and story is still good, different sprites don't change that

As for good JRPGs on Android, I'd say just emulate the best ones from the SNES. :D

To me, the art is half the reason to play, and I can't stand the revised version. To each his/her own though, I just feel it's a game best played on another system
or emulated

Dragon Quest I-II refuse to work on my Galaxy Note 4 and I'm betting TWEWY won't either. Square Enix doesn't care enough to support newer devices.

DQV, FFVI, & FF Tactics would be my top picks. I'm checking out Chaos Rings 3 right now despite thinking the first was a lackluster game.

I would prefer to avoid emulators. Aside from PSX I don't own any games that I could rip for it and even if I did I would have no way to rip them.

well Chrono Trigger is on android

This.

It's a native Google Play game.

Haven't tried 2 yet, and I have no interest whatsoever in TWEWY on any platform, but, Dragon Quest 1 works fine on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active.
As does Dragon Quest 8.

Terra Battle is pure awesome sauce.

I second this. Chain Chronicle is pretty damn fun as well.

There's also a ton of JRPGs from Kemko, like Soul Historica and Soul of Deva. Apparently I have these on my app library but never played them. Looks like cool retro SNES JRPGs.

I played FFVI back when it originally released for the SNES. I've played it and beat it on almost EVERY console it's released on. I've also played and beat the android version. It's definitely worth playing. Felt fresh again to me.

Hah, a couple of people in a previous thread mocked me for pointing out that when people ask for good, involving games on mobile OSes, it's always games from older platforms that are suggested.

Well, look at the first dozen responses to this thread as a perfect example of what I was saying.

Would love it if you could suggest some non-ports (not that the port suggestions are wrong or bad but still.)

The game is still worth playing regardless of the art style change. I would recommend the GBA version with corrected audio, but if the Android version is the only one you can play, why not.

Terra Battle is the best original JRPG I've played on a phone. Uses the strengths of a touch screen, aka sliding tiles around I suppose.

The World Ends With You

Great game, pretty unique and with a lot of style. The Story is a bit cliché and Nomura like (I don't really know if he was involved with the Story, but it's the type of story I expect in his games) but still pretty enjoyable.

It got a pretty nice graphical upgrade (compared to the original on 3DS) and plays well with touch controls.

Some of the Kemco JRPGs are somewhat decent and a good time waster when traveling and stuff. The stories aren't great, but then again most stories in console JRPGs are not exactly good either.

*Googles to see if Final Fantasy VI is on Android*

Final Fantasy VI.

Now if they just had added a static D-pad for that... I'm actually fine with the new art, I've never finished VI and I thought I could finally do it on my phone, play on breaks at work etc

But why the fuck did they go with the "d-pad appears where you touch" control scheme?! It boggles the mind, it's literally the worst way to do an RPG like FF on Android.

I'll agree that many of the Kemco RPGs are good and there's no pay to progress at a reasonable rate (some of the games have DLC equivalent stuff (pay to access a special area/chapter) and some Pay To Win stuff (end game items or sometimes cheaty items that aren't otherwise available).

The quality and styles are really mixed though, but there seems to be separate sub groups who work on different games, after a while you can tell who did what from the screen shots and battle systems.

They do have a lot of the flaws of the era of games they are modeled after (which is 16-bit to early PSX depending on the game) eg in Aeon Avenger characters get bonuses with a specific weapon type but 1 weapon type lacks a character and ~3 others only join as temporary NPCs and in Symphony of Eternity you get to recruit the Quirky Minibosses to your side but they feel incomplete (they basically end up as slightly inferior versions of the normal characters in practice because they tend to be missing a specialized end game class variant).

If you like SRPGs check out the stuff by Mangobile as well. Its very old school in style but well polished and with some interesting tweaks and all the games have demos available.

ETA - Yeah, agree with the below as well. FF Dimensions is really good. The Chaos Rings games are solid too , though there story lines seem to have been produced while tripping.

Final Fantasy Dimensions. Original story, great soundtrack, job system, actually a full fledged JRPG with battle animations, overworld graphics/map traversal and everything.

I still cant get into Tera Battle. I want to, but sliding around images and no actual battle scenes kinda kills it for me.

I will say if you can get into it, the soundtrack is amazing.

The best that is not a port is probably Chaos Rings 3. It's like a B tier PS2 JRPG, and it's as good as you can get on mobile.

Hated chaos rings, personally. Don't see the appeal.
You might try again with Chaos Rings 3, which is a big departure from previous titles.

Listen to this man. Tactics Maiden is one of the best SRPG's I've played in the last years. I've played right after FE Awakening, and it's so much better gameplay wise. If you like SRPG's and can get past the ugly visuals, it's a must have. It's free to try too.

.

Oh wow, it has an English translation now. Bought. Though I hope they've taken out the copy protection from 1 & 2 that broke with every major Android update and that they never fixed after Lollipop.
