Best looking 8-Bit games?

I always thought Little Nemo: The Dream Master had great graphics. They were amazingly colorful and the characters had awesome design, especially the cigar-smoking gorilla!

wow little nemo. been a looong time.

Time for some Game Gear love:

Streets of Rage 2

Shining Force 3 The Final Conflict
The map scenes are pretty pedestrian, but the battle scenes look almost on par with the Genesis ones.

guys seriously. the worst SMS rivaled the best of what nes offered.
I was a Ninty kid back then.

..........

But you're right.
Post some SMS games and show them some real good looking 8-Bit games.

SMS Wonder Boy, Sonic, R-Type and Golden Axe.

Then I'd say Kirby is the NES showcase, but SMS was far superior in terms of colors and sprites, another league.

Not counting PC Engine as 8 bit obviously, otherwise.. ;)

I could be completely wrong, but I remember seeing pictures of Totally Rad for the NES in a Nintendo Power a couple decades ago or so, and thinking it was an SNES game.

Google Image search didn't really help confirm or deny it looking awesome, and I remember renting the game and thinking it was pretty shitty.

Anyone have a similar recollection on this game?

Edit: The game in question

Holy shit! :lol :lol :lol

I think this should be changed to "what's the best looking NES games".

A small minority ever really experienced the 8-bit generation outside of the NES, yet by virtue of it being underpowered compared to SMS etal it's nearly disqualified from participating to begin with.

Oh...forgot about Game Gear.

And yes, Shining Forces is the Coup de grace for this thread. Shining Force artwork > All.

As far as NES games are concerned, Batman: Return of the Joker is a better looking game than Ninja Gaiden, SMB3, or the Mega Man games.

I came in here just post about Batman: RotJ. Bless you, sir.

Needs more Willow... that game holds up favorably to most early Genesis RPGs even.

And yeah, a lot of late gen GG games were just stunning... Sylvan Tale's another one.

I agree with NES Kirby. Also, I distinctly remember Metal Storm looking really good.

If I'm thinking of the right game (Irem 2D side scroller where you controlled a robot and could flip gravity), I was always impressed by it's graphics, especially the sprites and animation for the explosions.

What a great game that was.

Kirby Adventure I think is the definitive answer to this thread.

It is one of the few NES games that could easily pass as 16-bit. It is the only 8-bit game that I can recall that featured parallax scrolling, definitely a technical marvel for the time.

-edit Wonder Boy III is a great choice too.

If I remember correctly, didn't Ninja Gaiden III on the NES have parallax scrolling?

I agree. No NES game should be in this thread if we're talking all 8-bit systems. It just didn't have the power compared to others.

Well, if you count the PCE and CD as 8 bit... then definitely Rondo of Blood - so good that CV games are *STILL* using some of its sprites!

Some other really awesome looking 8-bit games:

Phantasy Star (3D dungeons were a technical marvel, great monster animation, vivid color palette)

Ninja Gaiden 3 (extremely detailed backgrounds for NES standards, awesome cinema scenes)

Totally Rad (holy shit bosses)

Recca: Summer Carnival '92 (some amazing effects for the NES, like raster effects, with nary a trace of slowdown, in fact the game runs super fast)

StarTropics (only game to my knowledge to use the MMC6 mapper)

MetalStorm (amazing backgrounds and highly detailed, large bosses)

MobyGames did indeed look quite sharp!

They have a good selection of screenshots so they're a good fit for this kind of thread, also it doesn't change a thing, does it?

No.

This thread isn't titled "Best looking 8-bit game." Instead of trying to derail a perfectly acceptable thread (and trip down memory lane), just post some pictures of games you thought looked good. Seriously. When you look back at this generation of handhelds, could you really say the DS didn't have any good looking games simply because the more powerful PSP existed?

The NES Batman game I posted about has parallax scrolling. Bucky O' Hare, another impressive-looking NES game, did as well.

As does Totally Rad and Megaman 6.

Totally Rad actually uses 4 layers of parallax scrolling! It's really quite incredible for the NES.

No.

Mobygames blocks hot-linking images. You can see them probably because they are already cached on your browser, but everyone else is only seeing a bunch of MobyGames logos.

Re-host the images and edit your post. I think the mods aren't fond of blatant hot-linking.

The NES port of The Immortal. Rented it without having heard of the original, and was blown away by how many frames of animation went into beginning a climb down a ladder.

I like how in this day and age people still direct-link to images.
It's great because it's like a one-way mirror of idiots. You can see the people who are too lazy to understand rehosting them and all they see are the images they pilfered.

So I'm not the only one who played it? I actually sold it once and had to hunt high and low to get it back. I've now spent 150 euros combined on it. :D
