Best Mario Party on the GameCube?

Hey gaf. MP2 gets alot of love on my WiiU and I've been meaning to get another one for a while now. Very hard to figure out which one to get, sadly. Can't get 3 since I do not own an N64 (and not about to buy one + 4 controllers for just the one game... though I am curious about the Goemon games, too) and the Wii/WiiU entries get lambasted to no end so I've decided to get one of the NGC ones.

Thing is, which one should I get? 4 and 6 seem to get the most love and considering how 4 more closely follows 2 I was thinking of getting 6 for a broader palette. But maybe that's the wrong decision?
How about 5 and 7, how do they rate?

4 and 6 are indeed the best if you ask me.

4 is great and the closest to the original N64 games. 5 introduces a flawed item system that they significantly improve on in 6. 6 is the most unique since it has a cool day/night mechanic. 7 is basically 6 but without all the cool stuff.

I still think 5 is a lot of fun if you accept the anarchy reigns mechanic of not knowing what half the spaces on the board do until you land on them.

Btw OP I only played 5 on GC and didnt like it one bit. Felt too random and uncompetitive compared to the 1st one I loved

After playing the only ones that count (4, 5 for some reason and 6) 4 has some of the better mini games, 6 has the better boards overall. In the end I would go with 6 just for the fun boards and faster pace.

4's "mini/mega" mushroom mechanic was annoying and made board traversal a chore. It's a shame cause the rest of the game is indeed quite good.

I'm going to have to echo the opinion that 6 is the best. Great minigames, boards, the orb mechanic is at its best here, and the games usually go pretty fast. 7 is also good, though a bit slower-paced.

The best thing about 5 is everything but the actual board games. 1v1 tank battles is amusing (but fuck DK's tank combo that's op as fuck)

I'd say 6 or 7 are among my favourites. I do have a soft spot for 4, but the mini/mega mushrooms pale in comparison to the day/night mechanics.

One of the things I hated in 5. Having skipped 2,3,4 I think the 1st MP boards wete great. Sone with less gimmicks some with more but not too much.
The boards in MP1 are pretty great. It's a shame the mini-games were lacking and that there was no item system at the time.

Surprised at the amount of love 4 gets over 5 which is my personal favourite of the GC games. The fact all the boards had that same rigid structure - horizontal/vertical routes only - regardless of all the decoration and aesthetic themes - always felt underwhelming to me. I much preferred 5's design choices and the fact the boards actually looked/felt part of the environment. The single-player/story mode didn't grip me as much as it did 4 (mostly because there was no collectible aspect), but the capsule mechanic they introduced in 5 was much-needed and I liked it. 5 only just beats out 4 overall.

Yeah, 4 or 6 would probably be your best bet for Gamecube. 4 has some really solid minigames, and 6's day/night mechanic can make for some interesting board matches.

Have a bit of a soft spot for 5 due to its theming, atmosphere and abundance of extra modes (some more fun than others), but the capsule mechanic may piss you off. XD 6 does a better job of this however.

4 had slooow loading but amazing mini-games.
5 had pretty good mini-games too.
6 I don't actually remember apart from the Day/Night cycle and mic games, but the regular mini-games were less memorable to me.
7 had a gimmicky fun time with 8-player support but the rest of the package felt slimmer as a result.

Memorable mini-games for me goes: 4>5>7>6

I enjoy all of them, but 6 and 7 are my favorites because I love the orb item system. I like claiming spaces for myself and being like, "This is mine now. Land here at your own peril."

I also like 5 for the vehicular combat mode.

5 by a mile IMO. The minigames are by far my favorite in the series, and the game isn't bogged down by the gimmicks that you'd see in 6 and 7.

My favorite is 5. 4 felt too plain. 6 and 7 have the mic mini games that don't always work. Also, 5 has Pushy Penguins. So, it wins by default.

6 or 7... Though I personally prefer 6.

I love Mario Party 6's boards, and overall game design. The Orb system was fully fleshed out , and the Day/night system resulted in some dynamic game play. You'd have boards like Snowflake Lake that go from fairly tranquil in the day to an outright bloodbath at night, and Faire Square became crazy if Stars cost 5 coins at night. I also like how 6 only has two luck based minigames and no hidden blocks. It's one of the less dickish Mario Parties.

Easily 4. It's the closest feel to the N64 games, doesn't have any stupid, crazy gimmicks, and you can still play as Donkey Kong!

4 has some great mini games and side content, but having recently replayed it, it hasn't aged well. One thing later MP's did semi-well is speed up the gameplay (albeit incrementally), which leaves MP4 feeling quite slow nowadays.

So yeah, I vote for 6 as well. Good selection of minigames, great selection of boards.

I say Mario Party 6 since all the boards don't have a bad gimmick nor do they have parts of the board segmented off like Mystery Land from 2

Woah when did this happen? I heard about it getting rated for the Japanese store ages ago but never heard about it coming to WiiU. Is this available in Europe?

Early last year for both NA / EU, I looked up some screenshots of the game on Wii U VC and it's dark.

6 and/or 7

4 and 5, while being alright games, have some issues. 4 pretty much relies entirely mini/mega mushrooms as the primary items (which is a huge step back from 3's multitude of gamechangers). 5 is a nice step up, but there's no way to change the game speed and the orbs are a bit clunky as they're first introduced.

6, on the other hand, is when they started to refine the orb system and come up with some unique gimmicks for the boards (but all the while, not getting too carried away with said gimmicks). The day/night system and the changes that brings is also a welcome addition.

7, though I haven't spent too much time with it, carries on the orb system and adding more unique board gimmicks (though your mileage may vary with how much you prefer that to a more traditional Mario Party experience).

I'm no fan of the Mini/Mega gimmick in 4, but otherwise it's great.

5 is decent, but 6 is like a better and more interesting version of 5.

7 has two good boards, one of which (Windmill board) is a cool twist on the gameplay where you need majority stake in windmills to earn stars. But the music in this level sucks. Probably my least favourite overall of the lot.

5 had that awesome tank game so it's no contest. 6's day night shit was terrible. 4 is good and 7 is like 6 but better.

I feel like 5 6 and 7 had some great things to them but I don't remember too clearly. What I really liked about 4 was the story mode and how each character has their own personalized rooms that got decorated with presents as you kept playing. I always thought that was neat.

4 has the worst boards in the entire series. Basically every board plays the same with the useless mini mushroom mechanics. Also way too many battle mini-game spaces where you play the same few games over and over again. So no, definitely not 4.

I'd rate them as such:

6 > 5 > 7 >= 4

6 just is the best overall experience. Great boards, great use of items (orbs in this game), great mini-games. 5 is a little worse in terms of item usage and mini-games, 7's boards are noticeably worse, and 4 is just frustrating to play with the awful boards and the mini/mega mushroom mechanic.

4 had great minigames but the boards were kinda trash.
5 had a better balance so I go for that, but honestly I can't really recall any reason to not say 6 or 7 in its place, they moved faster on boards but had more gimmick maps so your mileage may vary.

5 was my fav, infact whenever the family had a vote (me, wife, 2 kids) 5 was always the one we seemed to pick the most to play together. When we would go on vacation 5 was the only version we would usually take to play at nites and mornings in our resort room.

Never had or played 6 or 7, can't comment on those. 6 seems to getting alot of love, may have to revisit the series just for that. :)
