Best MMO You've Played ?

Eve Online, which had the most fun, deep pvp I could have ever asked for

Guild wars 1. GW 2 was also decent but paled in comparison to GW in regards to the deep, endless builds people could develop. Really hated that guild wars 2 went generic-class based. just one more reason I've given up on MMO

Yall got me wondering bout 'The Secret World' though. sounds like my bag (sandbox like character development is what I love)

Final Fantasy XI will never be replicated. Such incredibly strong memories tied to that entire experience.

I went through an unbelievable amount of hassle a few months back, just to log back on for the first time in seven years. It was sad...the world (or at least, the areas of it I remember) were largely abandoned.

That's the thing about MMOs...they wither and die. Single player games will always be there, but these worlds will, at some point or another, dissolve into the wind.

Final Fantasy Xi in its first 3 years and then A Realm Reborn.

XI would probably be hard to play now, but I never cared for how easy WoW was even when it first came out. XI really made you work for everything and it was apparent that WoW didn't, comparatively, but Im not one that cares much for post game stuff in MMOs.

I stopped with EVE when my ship got destroyed. I didn't have it insured :(

I too might try Secret World. I've been wanting to anyway.

Other than that. I was big into Runescape for a long time. I didn't do much but mine and smelt.

Not the most popular choice here but I gotta give it to runescape, it was basically the only mmo I could play with dial up Internet and no monthly payments.

Man that game still holds a good place in my gaming memories though.

Rift is my favorite after testing a lot of MMO:s. I don't care at all for PVP and the PVE in Rift is great. Really fits me well and I still log in sometimes when I want some MMO to play.

Ragnarok online, I really loved the card and stat allocation system. My dagger wizard and melee sages with live with me forever.

Hopefully Tree of Savior becomes a true successor.

Guild wars 1/had a lot of builds...too bad many of them were worthless and the majority of people used the same build.

WoW is the obvious answer and one that I am still playing.

However the first proper MMORPG that I really cared for was Dark Age of Camelot. It had crazy good ideas, three faction warfare, heavy-duty crafting and so on. It was properly difficult too, unlike most modern MMOs.

And an honorable shout/RIP goes out to Warhammer Online. It did not get the attention it deserved, but it was true to the world and lore and it was awesome. Too bad it did not have any legs.

You hit on a lot of great things that I like about the game, but I really want to emphasize that the game was awesome even without RvR. Even though I started out on a regular server, I eventually migrated to the co-op server, Gaheris, where RvR was not a thing, and I had my best times in the game there.

I'm a PvP centric guy, and while I enjoyed my time on Gaheris (esp. the take on the frontiers), my focus is PvP -- so my post does indeed have that slant.

For me, the biggest PvE advantage was that I could get powerleveled through it all and have a new PvP character available in a weekend or less. ;)

I do think that the reason I enjoyed my time on Gaheris (and even PvE on regular servers) is that PvE was a far more casual atmosphere back then -- it never got into things like DKP systems, or "raid groups", or lockout timers, or any of that BS, probably because very little of the content was instanced. Like, I hated the solo/group steps in TOA but loved the raid steps. But even towards the end of my time playing, dragon raids were just "bring along x people, maybe more, kill the things, /random 1000 for loot". And I liked that far more than silly buy/bid/"loot council" systems and all of the baggage that came with that.

Guild Wars 1

I have started with the game 8 years ago and I still play it from time to time, just to explore or visit my favourite locations without fast travel :)

Probably FFXIV:ARR.

FFXI would be on top, but the more I think about it, the more it felt like a full time job rather than a game.

Let me put it in the simplest terms I can:

WoW is not only the best MMO I've played, but is the best game I've ever played. If I had a billion dollar in my bank account I would abandon all things, lock myself down in the basement, organize an endless delivery of food and play this game.
no I wouldn't, it's a hyperbole

All the modicum of self-control I have went to break this addiction and even then, every new expansion is a big test for me. (no I didn't buy WoD).

Every MMO which tried to be WoW failed. Conan failed, Warhammer failed, SWTOR copied WoW 8 years after release and also failed. All the talks about cartoony graphics (those are worse than EQ2!), too easy, too short (only 2 months to reach level cap!), too streamlined that I've heard for years after game release amount to nothing compared with the joy of playing the game and the objective success of the model, which lifted the genre from a hardcore niche to the mainstream legend.

If you ask a random person on the street, he'll know 3 games: GTA, CoD and WoW. QFT.

FFXI was harsh, required tons of hours to do simple taks, bad support from developers its first years but it was an awesome experience that I cant see another one replicating, because part of what it made the game awesome was also the same things that made it too hard.

Getting through Arrapago Reef alone to get some AF quest done, or wandering something like castle Zvahl Baileys, the fear that you could lose the precious xp, expending millions waiting for that elusive Cursed -1 with some synthbreaks that broke you bank and soul, getting the main missions done (CoP, ToA, WotG), getting all Assaults done, Getting full Salvage sets when it was cool, camping Joyeuse...

Damn so many fond memories even if there was a lot of pain achieving some things, which I think its why I still remember them as something awesome... :)

FFXI for me. Made online friends that I still chat with. Sometimes I want to log in just to wander around the zones like Valkurm and Sanctuary of Zi'tah. Playing FFXIV right now with some FFXI friends and it's fun reminiscing about XI when something like a NM in XIV triggers a memory.

For the FFXIers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARghlVjBab0

Daaaamn, I remember seeing that vid so many years ago and still breaks my heart D:

SWTOR is not failing.

FFXIV is just as much a theme park MMO as WoW is. Complete with scripted boss fights even at high levels of play.

In fact that is what I miss about FFXI. Non-scripted boss fights. Yes there were things that were triggered, such as a NM using chainspell or a wipe move at %s of HP. But every move between those was a roll of the dice of which SE established the odds. It makes fighting tougher enemies far more engaging as you actually have to react to things.

One thing I learned from playing SWTOR and FFXIV's first turn of Coil was that each and every fight I did was predictable. Same series of moves and rotations. Things change at later stages of fights but still follow very scripted patterns. Difficulty is increased through enrages and dropping more aoes. So once you KNOW a fight you know it. Titan HM is the perfect example of overly scripted bosses.

No matter how much some people wish it weren't so, but simply put: WoW.

The production values alone (tight gameplay, unmatched animations and design, best music in the biz, etc) do it for me, to be honest. I love getting lost in that world.

I know most of you stopped playing a long time ago ( probably just before Cata, when the biggest subs drop occurred), but the game has changed A LOT since then. If you haven't played through Cata, MoP and WoD, you can't really be trusted to know anything about the current state of the game.

I play quite often and I'd be hard pressed to list all the things you can do now compared to Vanilla/TBC/WOTLK..

FFXI, without a doubt. Not just best MMO but best game I have ever played. No other game had so many memorable moments. It was harsh but it felt like it was worth the hassle every time.
The sense of achievement it provided... Getting a tough quest or mission done was nut just a check box on the side of the screen. It meant something.

I did so many cool things solo as a DRG/WHM.
Nowdays I don't have nearly enough time to play something as expansive as FFXI but damn do I wish SE would release something as epic as FFXI packaged into a single player RPG with some 2-4 player story coop slapped on to it.
Hell, I'd take a 1:1 copy / paste of FFXI with some scaling adjustments or admin tools...
I'd pay good money for it, too...

I used to play a Korean MMO called Dragonica. It was fun with the arcade style battle system and decent community. And who can forget RO.

Shaiya...

I liked GW2 but there's something off about it so I've only put in a few days of play. Yet when Shaiya hit (f2p) I spent months on it.

The best:

Lineage2 for its competitive style with penalties, penalties and especially politics.
Ultima Online for beeing kinda open world and its RP factor.
Some Zelda - Link to the past styled game. Forgot its name :(

The worst:
Archeage because of exploits, hackers incompetent publisher
GuildWars2 never really enjoyed the game even after hitting max level
World of Warcraft - meh, I don't like carebear games

As of right now, I will say XIV ARR. I don't play it as much as I once did but it has been a very enjoyable game. XI seemed fun but it took way way too long to get stuff done.

XIV does need way more content though, especially for midgame.

My first MMO was FFXI and it will forever have a special place in my life.

WoW I loved but I never found a place in a guild and people to create friendships with.

FFXIV i played since the beta of 1.0 alpha of 2.0 and so on. Still have a subscription but my FC (which dates back to FFXI) dissolved. Lead went away to another server and itjust killed the whole FC. Without a FC I can't really play FFXIV anymore.
It is hard to find a FC again with such a familiar atmosphere, where people talk outside of the game, we had a Facebook chat and whatsapp group and so on.

Maybe it is time to switch to another server. Start over on another server than Ragnarok.

(and yes, those 3 MMOs really are important to me)

Ragnarok Online I guess.

Most of my childhood is spent on saving up towards internet cafe and subscription fee for the game.

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade.

I had the time to dedicate to it and it's delicious, perfect raid content curve. You had heroic 5-mans for small guilds, you had solid 10 man content with great rewards and then you had a fantastic 25man series that were all hard in their own way.

Having less time on my hands many years later I found GW2 to be the best, since it's so damn rewarding no matter how little time you have. It's also one of the most beautiful in terms of art direction and UI design.

I haven't got time for any these days :(

The Secret World

Ultima online, it was the best before it change, it was the epitome of the greatest MMORPG of all time, it's completely ruined MMOs for me i can't even play them anymore without thinking about how confined and segregated MMORPG are now.

Hard to tell, actually.

I don't think WoW is the best, really. But it was the first one I immersed myself in and as such will hold an important place in my memories. Haven't touched it for years though.

On the other hand, Eve is something great and I hold it in high regard even though I get burned out with it so easily.

GW2 was wonderfull too. So I don't know.

In chronological order the way I played them:

Ragnarok Online
Lineage 2
WoW
FFXIV

I never got much into WoW, as growing up with Asian mmos kind of made my taste go towards this art style rather than stylized/cartoony characters and I still can't see the visual appeal of the game, because of that.

Currently I don't think any of the mmos I've played come even close to FFXIV. It's everything I've wanted in an mmo and more.

World of Warcraft for me. Maybe partially because it was the first. But also because it was the most convincing experience in terms of a world and locations with an actual sense of place.

Most fun I've had was starting as a Night Elf in Teldrassil and then making my way across the world to Westfall where my friends were playing.

That felt like an actual journey and it remains one of my favorite gaming memories, so damn cool.

To this day, Ragnarok online is the only MMO game that I've played seriously. Tried some others but didn't make it past two weeks in any of them. I played RO on and off for years.

Guild Wars 2 is the one of the only MMOs I've played and that will probably be my pick. I haven't sunk in enough hours to see enough of Tyria, nor am I experienced in MMOs to know any fundamental weaknesses of GW2's design, but I love the fact that it lacks a subscription and that I can jump into it whenever I want.

FFXIV on the other hand is...ehh, unremarkable. My free month expired yonks ago and I've little desire to subscribe because most of the highlights of that free month have simply been menial kill/fetch/deliver quests. Eorzea also feels strangely claustrophobic with an array of invisible walls and zones (which I suspect to be down to the PS3). It's nowhere near as much of a joy to explore as Tyria. I'm going to have to see what Heavensward offers.

I played them all minus some korean ones, and it's a fight between LOTRO and WoW. Ultimately I'm gonna give it to LOTRO

WoW, of course.

I've played WoW since it launched, with only a short month long break for Warhammer. It's not only my favorite MMO ever, but probably my favorite game ever. BC/Wrath era WoW is legitimately the most I've enjoyed any game in the 25 years I've been a gamer. A lot of that has as much to do with the people I played with as the game itself, though.

Mmos these days don't have a sense of community because all of the instant gratification mechanics in these games. You can litteraly solo all the way to cap without hearing a single word in chat. Yea, you can join a guild, but that isn't my point, there no sense of a large community anymore, just that little group you're in.

In SWG you could spend hours just chatting to random people in the cantina for no reason what so ever just because you felt like it that day. Good luck doing that in any theme park mmo.
