Best of the "Dynasty Warriors" style games?

Just bought my first one this week off of the PSN. It's Warriors Orochi. I'm having quite abit of fun with it. I've read enough about these games over the years to know the formula is pretty recycled but I still find myself wanting to know more about this series.

Specifically, is there a consensus on which is the best one? And I'm aware of Dynasty Warriors, Dynasty Warriors Empires, Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors Gundam and Warriors Orochi series. Did I miss any? And are there any standouts in there?

Thanks, Gaf!

Warriors Orochi 2 and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 are the best currently out. Sengoku Basara 2 + Heroes are great games too, if you can import (PS2/Wii).

My personal favorite is Dynasty Warriors 4, but that's just nostalgia speaking. DW Gundam 2 is probably the one I've put the most time into. 106+ hours and counting.

Kingdom of Fire is heads and shoulders above the rest IMO.

Edit: Not circle of doom. Stay away from that one. Get the ones on Xbox.

Same here. I still play it quite a bit. Warriors Orochi 2 is the best out of all of them though. I put in at least 150 hours.

And by the same virtue, Musou Orochi Z on the PS3 just because it contains both Orochi games with extras and a better framerate.

Also, I really enjoy the Empires series - i'd say DW5E is the best of the lot, while DW6E was fun and added some cool new features it was far too dumbed down for me to spend any lengthy amount of time with.

DW Gundam 2 is positively EVIL. I think it's the Lab system. I keep finding myself going "one more mission, just to see what I get in the Lab". And of course, "one more mission" turns into like five or six. :lol

The Empires series is more tactical right? When I say Orochi is my first game in this series I mean it. I literally have never played another game in this series before. I am a total noob. Gundam 2 looks cool, I'll have to check it out.

Was Dynasty Warriors 6 any good? I still see it on store shelves and local Gamestop has a few used copies.

Musou Orochi Z sounds awesome also. I'm assuming thats Japan only right? Thankfully, thats no barrier with a PS3. :D

Ahh I just saw a Siliconera bit about Musou Orochi Z coming over as Warriors Orochi: Collective. And Orochi 2 PSP coming as well. Good news.

I liked Warriors Orochi 1 more than 2. 1 felt a lot more like an old school beat - em - up than 2 did, also 2 had some awful framerate drops

My favorite was probably Warriors Orochi 1, 5 a close second, and 6 empires third

I wish that I got into Musou games at Warriors Orochi 2 (Or Z). The character swapping feature is a great one.

And how many characters has it got? Like 60 or so?

It's probably has the most satisfying combat. Sparks and fire everywhere.

Yep, they can be a bit daunting at first as Empires mode is basically a scaled down version of Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series - your goal is to unite all of China under your rule and you have to manage your officers and your cities, upgrad defences and production, recruit new officers, supress invasions, and engage in subterfuge and diplomacy etc.

DW6E scaled this down even further - you no longer have to consider troop placements or city defences, but insted you can choose to be an officer rather than a ruler, which opens up a ton of mercenary missions. DW6E is a great entry to the Empires series as it removes alot of what made the series so confusing for new players unused to Koei's various strategy series.

Eh, not so much - it added some new stuff and looked alot better than previous DW games, but they heavily altered the combat and levelling system and as a result I (and many other fans) were disapointed with DW6, but Empires manages to salvage an enjoyable title the wreckage of DW6 - it just came out recently though, so it'll probably still be quite expensive.

It's not actually coming out in English, unfortunately. Koei confirmed it. That Warriors Orochi: Collective thing is outdated news...

PS Avoid DW6 at all costs

Orochi Z has been canceled for the US. Orochi 2 PSP comes out in a couple days though.

Another vote for Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 here. If you like Gundam, or giant robot anime in general, the game is incredibly addictive.

Yeah even on the PSP Warriors Orochi is alot of fun. All the weapon attacks produce sparkly graphics and bodies fly everywhere. I bet on the PS3 or 360 the graphics would actually be nice instead of just passable! And you just hit a direction on the d-pad to pop your new character in to play which automatically causes the character you were using to regen health and musou gauge. So there's actually some strategy involved in building a good team and swapping in characters.

It's frantic, fun and makes you feel awesome as you plow through the hordes.

Really? That's a shame. Might have to import it then.

Sounds like Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 might be next on my list though.

Samurai Warriors 2+XL(PS2/360).

If you get this on the 360, SW2 alone costs $15-$20, but the real kicker is the 'Xtreme Legends' expansion on the marketplace is still $30.

And that is why digital distribution sucks.

Hmm thanks for the tip about Empires. Empires 6 looks to have launched at a fairly budget price so I will definitely check that one out.

And Musou Orochi Z has me salivating. I just realized it isnt the first 2 games on one disc but rather both previous Orochi games combined into one gigantic game. Sounds like a blast!

It's not a strict DW-type game, but it's made by Koei and it feels similar: Crimson Sea. I had a ton of fun with the weapon customization and some of the boss fights where really great.

It's not. The two games are still split by campaign; you have to clear the Musou Orochi levels before you can access the Musou Orochi Maou Saorin levels.

Although Z isn't coming out in English, Koei is adding the extra characters and content into the PSP version of Warriors Orochi 2, and the game will also have Japanese voices available.

Ahh ok. Sounds like Orochi 2 PSP will be worth checking out then. I wonder if it's going to be offered digitally for us eventual Go owners.

And thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Samurai Warriors 2 is the greatest the series has seen. Don't bother with SW2 Xtreme Legends until it's $10, which is about how much the content is worth.

Specifically, 2 is going to have all the content that was added in Z that wasn't already in 1.

Orochi 2 is head and shoulders above everything else in the genre. The only thing that would be better is an Empires version of it. The game is just crazy good.

I wish there was a Dynasty Warriors Gundam game for the PSP.

But otherwise, Warriors Orochi 2/Z is the best bang for your buck, yeah.

I found this game to be a lot like what I wanted the Dynasty Warriors franchise to evolve into. Not a perfect game of course, but it scratches the same itch.

I didn't really care for the first DW Gundam game. The bosses were too hard, there was little in the way of upgrades, and the mechs just weren't that much fun to play - and I'm a HUGE Gundam and Dynasty Warriors fan. Is the second one really that different? Is it worth getting if I didn't like the first one?

Sengoku Basara 2 + Heroes.

Yeah, this. After playing the SB2 generation of games, it's been harder and harder to go back to Musou.

Even now, I am frothing at the mouth for SB3, and couldn't really give a damn about Sengoku Musou (Samurai Warriors) 3.

Lol. I was under the impression that the Dynasty Warriors series was looked down upon and hated by many. Obviously, I was wrong.

It's not looked down upon by "many". Just the gaming press. :lol

Viking is a good game, but almost entirely unlike the Warriors mega-series. The fact your attacks can only hit one enemy at a time, even when you're surrounded by them, makes it a very different experience.

Speaking of Chaos Legion, Man...I don't think I've ever been more burned by a game. Looked AWESOME in trailers, and I bought it first day, and I just didn't like it at all.

However, it's got one of the greatest soundtracks of last generation.

I liken it to comfort food. Some days you don't want challenges (although getting some of the Personal Items in Orochi 1 was nightmarish), you just want to press buttons and watch armies crumble.
